to think that people don't judge others on their choice of curry?

Was having a conversation with a friend today.

She reckons that people look down on people who choose mild curry as though that is the wimp's choice. (NB my words not hers)

And that liking progressively hotter curries is a rite of passage that you have to go through, almost like a qualification.

I mean, what if you just don't like spicy food?!?

NB I ask this as a curry wimp - I go for the korma every time.

seasick but some people genuinely can't handle spicy food for many reasons, heartburn, indigestion, ibs etc.

I love the taste and smell of spicy food but I just can't eat it, it makes me ill. Doesn't make me a boring person though!

LeGavrOrf · 18/10/2013 16:06

Now I really want to go to Tayyabs Grin

BatPenguin · 18/10/2013 16:19

our local makes called chicken marango. This is a mild curry that has pureed mango in it and is more flavoursome and less sickly than a korma

Oh my days that sounds immense.

ScarerAndFuck · 18/10/2013 16:42

I judge anybody who eats cream-based curries.

Tomato-based is acceptable. Spinach Chicken is the only truly approved choice in this house. With a garlic naan. That I won't share, even if I can't finish it. And some of that onion salad. Mmmm.

NettoSuperstar · 18/10/2013 16:44

I want to go9 to Tayyabs too LeGav, I've heard great things about it, and Needoo grill.

Bunbaker · 18/10/2013 16:46

"Still think it. Don't give a fuck if people whinge. I have to say whenever I have met anybody who has said they don't like spicy food I've had an open mind but they've always turned out to be like that. I think it's symptomatic of a type of personality where once they are used to something they think that's the way it should be and won't countenance anything else different."

I judge people who judge those who can't tolerate very hot curries. I find that very narrow minded. I know several open minded, intelligent people who just don't like spicy food. I don't like them any the less for it. I just don't arrange to go for an Indian with them.

As has already been pointed out heat is not an indication of a good curry. If anything you could probably disguise a poor curry by adding too much chilli.

Goldenhandshake · 18/10/2013 16:56

If you like Korma try a chicken shashlick also, no gloopy creamy sauce but still mild and very tasty. Great for dieters/low carbers too!

I personally do not like really hot spicy food, 'burn' is not a flavour and that's all I get from a Fahl, Vindaloo etc.

I love the flavours from biryani, pasanda, shashlick, bhuna, dopiaza etc. With peshwari naan of course Grin.

SPsTombRaidingWithCliff · 18/10/2013 16:56

I'm counting down to my Indian feast. Starved myself for this!

Bunbaker · 18/10/2013 16:58

I agree Goldenhandshake. If a meal is too hot I can't taste what I am eating, and then I have to deal with horrific indigestion and diarrhea afterwards.

Lj8893 · 18/10/2013 17:01

Yum peshwari naan!!!

Mrsdavidcaruso · 18/10/2013 17:11

Not true seasick I have gastric reflux and even gavistan does not work I can be in total pain if I eat spicy food

And I really hate the smell of curry it makes me physically sick its not a case of me not wanting to try someone new

tb · 18/10/2013 17:23

Reality madras is for wusses - what about jalfrezi? Grin

I once sneezed with a mouthful of jalfrezi, and, don't know how, but managed to keep my mouth shut to avoid splattering pale sage green upholstery - but it didn't half hurt the back of my nose which was where it ended up.

I'm making a garlicky balti tonight. By the time DH eats it it will also have extra chilli in.

I judge diners or cooks who add chilli indiscriminately to increase heat. Please add flavour first glares at MIL.

One of our local restaurants offers a range of sauces each in a range of heats. So a mild-liker can experience very nearly the same range of flavours as a phaal-fool.

I'd pay good money for our local's lamb saagwala now. Dripping with garlic and spinach...

complexnumber · 18/10/2013 17:45

I started a thread sometime ago claiming you could judge someone by the sauce that they used on their food, from the worst to the best...

Ketchup
French Mustard
Brown Sauce
Tabasco
Lea & Perrins
English Mustard

(Obviously no room for change.)

SPsTombRaidingWithCliff · 18/10/2013 17:48

I dont like any of those sauces. Am I unjudgeable? Grin

I took this thread as tongue in cheek now some people seem to be offended by it! Of course noone genuinely judges someone by their curry choice?!

Apparently you can tell where someone is, based on whether they like ketchup or brown sauce - ketchup lovers are more likely to be southern whereas brown sauce lovers are more likely to be northern.

So I guess that means northerners are better than southerners. ;)

I'm not sure where that leaves people who like mayo on their chips though.

DumSpiroSpero · 18/10/2013 20:46

Well, DD was watching Rick Stein in India earlier & has decided she wants to have a go at making biryani for DH's birthday dinner next week so it looks like my mission to move her on from korma is starting to take effect Grin!

raisah · 18/10/2013 21:00

The kormas in restaurants aren't real kormas, no self respecting Asian would eat that stuff. Wait till you have tried a real korma, completely different & gorgeous although you'll have to be invited to somebody's house to sample that.

Bunbaker · 18/10/2013 21:04

Inspired by this thread DD and I have just returned from a fab meal at our local "Indian".

One thing I don't understand is why anyone wants chips with their curry - yes I admit to being judgey about that!

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 18/10/2013 21:07

I judge people who don't try different foods but then I understand if you're paying a lot of money you want something you know you like

I judge the idiot choking on a vindaloo more than someone enjoying their korma

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 18/10/2013 21:08

Bun baker, 'arf and 'arf innit! Aka half and half aka chips, rice and curry sauce

Bunbaker · 18/10/2013 21:13

But why would you want rice and chips?
