to think that people don't judge others on their choice of curry?

Was having a conversation with a friend today.

She reckons that people look down on people who choose mild curry as though that is the wimp's choice. (NB my words not hers)

And that liking progressively hotter curries is a rite of passage that you have to go through, almost like a qualification.

I mean, what if you just don't like spicy food?!?

NB I ask this as a curry wimp - I go for the korma every time.

DH prefers hot curry but I eat his as we have a half and half system going on for takeaways so we share each other's.
However if ordering just for me, it's a Passander with chicken puri and peshwari naan every time Grin

Oblomov · 16/10/2013 18:50

Medium for me. Just about sums me up, I guess. Would never occur to me to judge someone on their curry.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 16/10/2013 18:50

I judge people who judge other people's tastebuds.
Curry is not a cuisine in itself and spicy food isn't always hot. It should be about flavour and you should be able to taste all those flavours, they're not all going to bite your head off.

There's a long running joke about the chefs in late night Indian restaurants just adding more and more chilli powder to the dishes of people who come in loud and leary and want a 'bring it on' fiery dish. They have no idea what they're eating, might as well just swig a glug of Tabasco Sauce with every mouthful of food.

estya · 16/10/2013 18:51

I judge people who order the hottest curry they can handle every time. I think it's a bit sad. Have what you fancy, if today it's a korma and last week it was a vindaloo, that's fine.

DontPanicMrMannering · 16/10/2013 18:54

ringaring in DFIL more traditional restaurant he sells shit loads of omlettes Confused

TheArticFunky · 16/10/2013 18:54

It's rather an odd thing to judge someone on.

When I have Thai curries I have them very spicy and ask for extra chillies because to me it enhances the flavour. When I have Indian Curry it tastes more flavoursome if it is milder. I like a coconut curry with a few mild chillies added.

I like what I like and I don't care if I'm
judged.

HandragsAndGladbags · 16/10/2013 18:57

I don't like hot curry but like rogan josh, balti and bhunas. Not everything is hot.

FatPenguin · 16/10/2013 18:58

I like a korma but don't ever order it, I go for the 'wimpy' choice of tikka massala or butter chicken. DH always has one of the hotter curries but that's because he likes it really spicy, not to be 'macho'. I wouldn't judge someone for picking the hottest curry if they liked it but I would judge them if they only picked it 'cos they could handle it so to speak.

overmydeadbody · 16/10/2013 18:59

There are so many different forms of curry, and different 'curry' dishes from all around the world, and just about all of them can be ruined by too much chillies being added. Curries are about so much more than just burning your mouth off.

Having said that, how much chilly you can tolerate can be built up slowly. When I was growing up in the far Easy my Indian friends were introduced to chilly when they were toddlers, with the tiniest amounts being sprinkles on whatever they ate (fried eggs in the morning sprinkled with paprika and chilly flakes I remember seeing a lot). So your taste buds do get used to more and more chilly until you can actually taste the other spices and flavourings in a curry too, whereas if you are not used to it the chilly will dominate and stop you tasting the other spices and flavours.

What's wrong with an omelette and chips??! Confused

Remember in Gavin and Stacey when Stacey wants a korma but she's worried about being judged?

"Is a Korma boring, I know its boring, Gav would you laugh if I had a korma??"

Grin
overmydeadbody · 16/10/2013 19:00

and no, I don't judge anyone for what they like, it is not macho or wimpy.

overmydeadbody · 16/10/2013 19:01

Nugget I think that is only meant to be people ordering omelette and chips at a curry house. Why go to a curry house and order omelette and chips? You can go to the local pub for that.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 16/10/2013 19:04

Oh thanks over I get it now Grin I was thinking it was a rather random thing to be talking about on a curry thread!!

HandragsAndGladbags · 16/10/2013 19:05

The omelette ordering reminds me of the sketch on Goodness Gracious Me about going out and ordering an "English" where the guys want the blandest food on the menu, and the woman says she'll just have a curry Grin

Anyone have any idea what I'm on about? Confused

YouTheCat · 16/10/2013 19:10

Korma, Kashmiri, a nice Tikka Masala. I can just about manage a balti for heat/spiciness. Anything else and the heartburn just isn't worth it.

LadyBeagleEyes · 16/10/2013 19:16

Who the fuck cares what kind of curry people order.
I always have mild ones, yet another thing on MN to be judged on.

Moln · 16/10/2013 19:19

Oh i remember that Handrags, the men are trying to out bland each other.

Very funny

MakeMineAKorma · 16/10/2013 19:22

YY LadyBeagleEyes but MN is judging us on SOOOOOOOOOO many levels
Handbags on the worktop
Loo brush/no loo brush
Working/staying at home
BF/FF

JUst wondered if this was another thing to add to the list......

I'd judge the other way, that someone thought hotter is better.
Curries are all different, and it's about complimenting spices, not heat.
When I make curry, I do a selection of dishes, from hot to mild, wet, dry, crispy, creamy etc.

SelectAUserName · 16/10/2013 19:38

I agree that if you like korma you'll probably like passanda and butter chicken too - v mild and sweet.

They're a little bit too sweet for me, I prefer a dopiaza, biryani, balti or occasionally - so long as it's not too hot - a jalfrezi. But I wouldn't judge you for preferring a milder curry to mine; each to their own.

ScarletLady02 · 16/10/2013 19:51

I love spicy food, but like to mix it up a bit. Ceylon is nice, Jalfrezi, Korahi, I like pretty much any curry to be fair...as long as I can mop it up with a Peshwari Naan I'm happy Grin

NotYoMomma · 16/10/2013 19:52

I look down on my bil who always orders Madras and then fucking sweats all over the table in public and asks for a fucking towel. Blush

so bad

NotYoMomma · 16/10/2013 19:53

bhuna is my dish of choice and sometimes that istoo hot

mewmeow · 16/10/2013 19:54

Yabu if it was completely in a jokey way, but to suggest it in a serious way then she ibu! I love a vindaloo but i think everyone assumes I have I have to be hardcore (ha! I'm such a wuss otherwise), I just love feeling like I'm on fire. Can completely understand people not liking spiceyness though. Oo want a curry so much now :(

Chippednailvarnish · 16/10/2013 19:57

Korma = Chav

Don't panic any chance of a recipe for restaurant quality dansak? Pretty please?
