AIBU to refuse to let 11 yo DS wear Lynx?

He is desperate for a can of the stuff because "all the boys in my class have it".

For one thing, I suspect that's not true. But even if it were:

  1. I don't want him wearing any kind of product that he might inhale (he's daft enough to spray it on copiously in a confined space).
  1. I don't think any child of that age needs anti-perspirants of any description.
  1. I don't want him to smell like particularly bad loo cleaner.
  1. If all the boys in his class jumped off the roof of a building, would he have to do it too?

He thinks I'm unspeakably paranoid and ridiculous for suggesting that he will die either of Lynx inhalation or cancer caused by toxins from spray-on anti-perspirants. Happily, all his pocket money is confiscated for the next month so there is no risk of him buying it off his own bat.

But AIBU?

YABU...very. All the boys WILL have it. Most start using it in year 6!

emsyj · 11/10/2013 23:04

YABU IMO but I only have girls and they are both under 4, so what do I know? Wink

Annunziata · 11/10/2013 23:04

YABU. They will all have it. Pick your battles.

notanyanymore · 11/10/2013 23:04

Yabu

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/10/2013 23:05

YABU.

CocacolaMum · 11/10/2013 23:05

isn't lynx made for 11/12 yr old boys?

Binkyridesagain · 11/10/2013 23:06

YABU every male has to use lynx at some point in their life, start them early and by the time they are out in the world they will have got over it and be using something that doesn't smell like loo cleaner

Mynewmoniker · 11/10/2013 23:06

YABU. Thank goodness he's already started to think of his personal hygiene...some lads of 15 still haven't got the idea!

ICameOnTheJitney · 11/10/2013 23:07

Also it's not about how YOU want him to smell now...he's making his own choices.

blondiedollface · 11/10/2013 23:07

I certainly know that by the start of Senior school EVERYBODY I knew was wearing deodorant and anti perspirants. Lynx do roll-ons but it's not going to kill him, it's going to save him a lot of torture and BO problems. I don't understand why you could possibly be discouraging good hygiene?!

CocacolaMum · 11/10/2013 23:07

my friend used to use lynx. he sprayed it up close all over his sock and lit it (while wearing it)

He was 33 last time I witnessed this particular party trick.

TheBuskersDog · 11/10/2013 23:08

YABU. I have not heard of an epidemic of pre-pubescent boys dying through Lynx inhalation.

If you smelled my 11 yo DS you'd be investing in lynx. Lucky you that he hasn't got to the pongy stage yet.

ICameOnTheJitney · 11/10/2013 23:09

Well so what? there are stupid tricks to be done with all kinds of things...tattoos with a compass were popular when I was in secondary...I still allow my DD to have one!

Stravy · 11/10/2013 23:09

YABU, and I know someone who does that with the socks

TheDetective · 11/10/2013 23:09

YABU!

My 11 year old uses it. I have taught him to use it sparingly.

He get's it wrong sometimes... but hey, it's better than smelling a little sweaty during the day!

I think most boys are using deodorant at this age.

Spirulina · 11/10/2013 23:10

Why no pocket mk net? What's he done wrong? He's growing up and thinks differently to you.... You will alienate him if you are being so ridiculous this early on!

AlexaChelsea · 11/10/2013 23:11

YABU.

Point 1 is wildly paranoid.

And wouldn't you rather have him use it before he needs it, than need it and not have it?

Asheth · 11/10/2013 23:11

I've just bought a can of Lynx for DS's (aged 11) stocking! Blush

AcrylicPlexiglass · 11/10/2013 23:11

Yes, you are being incredibly unreasonable. Buy him some forthwith.

snice · 11/10/2013 23:11

lots of 11 yr old boys DO need anti perspirant!

Hopasholic · 11/10/2013 23:12

YABU. That's why schools pong of boy smell. Give the poor kid some deodorant!

TwoStepsBeyond · 11/10/2013 23:12

YABU if you think 11 yos don't need anti-perspiration! My DS is 9 and I noticed his pits were a bit wafty a few weeks ago. I got him a solid stick deo (as he'd probably miss with an aerosol and spray right out behind him!)

DS1 is 13 and loves Lynx but I have to make sure he gets the anti-p one, not just body spray.

The only thing I have against it is the claims that women will flock to you if you wear it. For any guy, not least a young impressionable teen, that's a powerful (& totally misleading) message. However, everyone prefers a boy who smells clean and fresh (especially his mum) so I'm happy to go with it.

AthenaAshton · 11/10/2013 23:13

I'm happy for him to disguise the stinky boy smell with some potion or other (he has plenty). He did finally change his socks when he read a book that said that smelly feet were the result of bacterial excrement.

I just don't want him to disguise it with something that might give him cancer or cause him to die by fume-inhalation.

Or should I just buy him a tracksuit as well, and let him get on with it?

It is very out of character, I should add.
