AIBU to refuse to let 11 yo DS wear Lynx?

He is desperate for a can of the stuff because "all the boys in my class have it".

For one thing, I suspect that's not true. But even if it were:

  1. I don't want him wearing any kind of product that he might inhale (he's daft enough to spray it on copiously in a confined space).
  1. I don't think any child of that age needs anti-perspirants of any description.
  1. I don't want him to smell like particularly bad loo cleaner.
  1. If all the boys in his class jumped off the roof of a building, would he have to do it too?

He thinks I'm unspeakably paranoid and ridiculous for suggesting that he will die either of Lynx inhalation or cancer caused by toxins from spray-on anti-perspirants. Happily, all his pocket money is confiscated for the next month so there is no risk of him buying it off his own bat.

But AIBU?

OP posts:

Where's the evidence for Lynx causing cancer? Or anything else except a pretty grim smell?

curlew · 12/10/2013 09:17

And if anyone says "it's got chemicals in it" I may have to shoot myself.

OrchidLass · 12/10/2013 09:23

I had to spend some time recently training in a boys school and spent a majority of the time in year 6. I swear they were ALL waeribg the stuff. You couldn't move for hair gel, the smell of Lynx and scowling. Grin

RevoltingPeasant · 12/10/2013 09:38

CBA to google now but I thought there was a fairly well established link between anti perspirants (not deodorants) and cancer...? Because they actually prevent sweating, they inhibit the release of toxins?

We were also not allowed AP for this reason as teens. I used Lush deo for years instead....

Could be bollocks but I am sure it is A Thing rather than solely OP invention.

RevoltingPeasant · 12/10/2013 09:39

Obviously it's not about chemical curlew - water is a chemical! It's about AP in particular also Lynx makes me heave

NotYoMomma · 12/10/2013 09:41

yabu

chartreuse · 12/10/2013 09:44

YABU. After years of lynx induced nausea, actually found a reasonably scented Lynx for Ds. I am so nice that I'm going to get out of my toasty bed and look in the bathroom to see what it's called Grin

It is Deep Space. You can thank me laterWink

lljkk · 12/10/2013 10:05

I agree Lynx is rank & yucky, but I would let him have it if he's that keen. Choose your battles.

Believe me, the day will come when you will wish he used rather more than less of it.

Oblomov · 12/10/2013 10:05

I LOVE Lynx.
I like really strong smelling aftershaves aswell.
And very strong perfumes on women.

Can't understand this hatred of lynx.

ToggyD · 12/10/2013 10:12

YABU and YANBU.

Give him a choice of other deodorants, but if he wants Lynx, let him have lynx. If he's 11 he'll soon get fed up of all the bouncy boobed women in bikinis he attracts.

YABVVVVVVVU!!!

bruffin · 12/10/2013 10:23

The APs cause cancer is a myth

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/10/2013 10:26

You're being ridiculous.
That's about the age my ds started using it, he's now 18 and has more sophisticated tastes.
He also started showering everyday without any battles, it meant he was growing up and starting to care about his appearance.
Take him out and buy him another type he likes or your ds is going to grow up into a very smelly man.

Bexicles · 12/10/2013 10:28

YABU, don't be mean!

Bexicles · 12/10/2013 10:31

Linx do a roll on now apparently www.lynxeffect.com/product/detail/349884/africa-rollon

shewhowines · 12/10/2013 10:35

I did the "no way are you having it" and then gave it to him for christmas.

He loved it.

They don't get many christmas surprises at that age, so take every opportunity you can.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/10/2013 10:39

I don't think any child of that age needs anti-perspirants of any description.
Have you been around my 9 year old when she is doing PE. Sweaty Betty she is soaking clothes without anti-perspirant she would be the laughing stock of her class.

valiumredhead · 12/10/2013 10:41

It's the teen boy equivalent of first lip gloss. No big deal and all the boys DO have some ime.

usualsuspect · 12/10/2013 10:44

You can get lynx roll on.

RevoltingPeasant · 12/10/2013 10:45

Interesting bruffin although that second site is deffo not peer reviewed and some of their 'interviews' are with people who work in the industry.

fwiw I do use anti-perspirants now.....

OP I think getting it for him as a Christmas gift is a great idea, and then you can make sure it's not one of the really rank ones.

YABVVVU - and your comments about inhalation made me Grin

Relax and let him have his spray!!!!

HellonHeels · 12/10/2013 10:50

I cant see why you wouldn't let him have it if he wants it. Don't you remember being a teenager and wanting the same stuff as your peers, feeling the need to be one of the crowd? You sound a bit rigid and controlling OP. Was your DS's bad behaviour a reaction against that, do you think?

curlew · 12/10/2013 10:51

Bugger. I forgot to say I'd have to shoot myself if anybody mentioned "toxins" as well. Oh well, I've had a nice life...............

123Jump · 12/10/2013 10:54

When I worked as a nurse on a breast cancer ward, we were always hearing about 'research' from concerned patients into how anti per spirants cause cancer. Fair enough they were going through tough times.
There was no real evidence, just some theories. Unless things have changed in the last few years?
Surely anything smells better than a teenage boys 'natural' odour, Grin?!
