AIBU to refuse to let 11 yo DS wear Lynx?

He is desperate for a can of the stuff because "all the boys in my class have it".

For one thing, I suspect that's not true. But even if it were:

  1. I don't want him wearing any kind of product that he might inhale (he's daft enough to spray it on copiously in a confined space).
  1. I don't think any child of that age needs anti-perspirants of any description.
  1. I don't want him to smell like particularly bad loo cleaner.
  1. If all the boys in his class jumped off the roof of a building, would he have to do it too?

He thinks I'm unspeakably paranoid and ridiculous for suggesting that he will die either of Lynx inhalation or cancer caused by toxins from spray-on anti-perspirants. Happily, all his pocket money is confiscated for the next month so there is no risk of him buying it off his own bat.

But AIBU?

Some 11 year old boys do need anti perspirants - it's to do with the boy not the age.

Mabelface · 11/10/2013 23:51

All his mates will smell of lynx Africa. All 3 of my boys have done the lynx phase and none of them have been overcome by fumes. YABU.

BackforGood · 11/10/2013 23:54

YABU - it's a rite of passage.
You are being OTT and paranoid about "being overcome with fumes" bit - he's spraying it on his body for a couple of seconds, once a day.

lessonsintightropes · 11/10/2013 23:57

Thank fuck for this thread. My (36 YO) DH insists on still wearing Lynx despite my very polite suggestions he might vary his type of deodorant. I now have enough ammo to suggest a switch Grin

Fakebook · 12/10/2013 00:08

Will you be purchasing some Old Spice/Brut for him instead? Maybe buy a tub of brylcreem while you're at it and get him some tweed trousers with braces too?

elcranko · 12/10/2013 00:16

YABU. He is taking an interest in his personal hygiene and I really don't understand why you think this is a bad thing. Show him how to use it if you're so worried. This could be a really good thing, him getting used to washing and using deodorant now before he gets to the pongy stage but hasn't got a clue how to look after himself.

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:24

yabu my dds were wearing body spray at 11 and I know it stinks to the high heaven but they probably are all wearing it, of course it is up to you what you allow him to wear but I think I would let him just hold your nose

Fozzleyplum · 12/10/2013 00:30

The cans of Lynx are definitely a at school.

The other day my DS said one of the boys was using a deodorant he really liked the smell of and could he have some. It was apparently called, "something like Old Mice". He rapidly went off the idea when he learned that his grandfather uses it.

Fozzleyplum · 12/10/2013 00:31

Oops - "definitely a currency at school".

ghostonthecanvas · 12/10/2013 00:36

YABU both genders use it in my house Sad Smells like a brothel sometimes!. They will hopefully grow out of it. I am a hippy, have crystal deodorant and used to make a lovely range of bath/skincare free from 'bad' stuff. Pick your battles wisely.

ghostonthecanvas · 12/10/2013 00:38

Disclaimer. ..what I imagine a brothel to smell like

TeamSouthfields · 12/10/2013 00:38

yabu... uv taken his pocket money off of him because he wants to wear deodorant... Sad Sad Shock Shock Shock

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:38

dd was into the girl lynx for a while god it was putrid but she liked it

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:39

I cant believe you have taken pocket money off him

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/10/2013 00:40

Yabu Biscuit

LeoandBoosmum · 12/10/2013 00:41

No, YANBU because the stuff stinks! I don't know how teachers breathe in class... I swear some of these lads must spray half a can a day on themselves!

TeamSouthfields · 12/10/2013 00:43

why post here!?!? U seem to have all the answers op!!

thornrose · 12/10/2013 00:43

I don't think any child of that age needs anti-perspirants of any description.

Try smelling a year 5 or 6 class after PE? Shock

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:43

my friend is a school assistant and she says she is choked to death daily by lynx Grin

sweetestcup · 12/10/2013 01:17

My 20 year old DS still wears the stuff, although to be fair I cant really smell it in the house anymore....its smothered by the smell of the copious amounts of aftershave he wears!

AthenaAshton · 12/10/2013 08:39

Ok... I am defeated. There are decidedly better battles to pick, so we will go to Tesco and I will pretend he's not mine. Grin

But TeamSouthfields: I did not confiscate his pocket money because he wanted to buy Lynx Confused. I confiscated it for vile behaviour that, as I said, I didn't want to discuss on here.

I teach at a boys' school when I walk past the cloak room last thing on Friday I do find my asthma aggravated by the huge amount they spray before meeting the girls!
That said at the age of 14, the boy I had a crush on wore Lynx Africa, I remember the smell well!
11 year old boys are often very stinky indeed. Lynx is definitely the lesser of two evils Grin

Artandco · 12/10/2013 09:07

Can't you just buy/ suggest alternatives? There is 101 different types

Dove
Simple
Oy! ( designed to teens)- organic

Let him choose some nice perfume for the 'smelling nice'. Having a nice fragrance he likes means people can buy for Xmas and bdays also after initial expense. Diesel/ dkny/ Ralph Lauren are quite nice at this age

heidihole · 12/10/2013 09:13

Can you get roll on lynx?

I wasn't allowed sprays as a teenager because of same reasons as you Op. didn't scar me for life, I had roll on stuff!

BellaVita · 12/10/2013 09:15

Yabu
