Aibu to stick a pin in my black fingernail?

I've just shut my thumb in a car door. It's not broken, but the whole nail has instantly gone black/blue.

I've run it under cold tap and iced it. The pain from the pressure under the nail is hideous.

Would I be unreasonable to stick a pin in the nail as it's cracked at the base and there's a bit if blood anyway?

Ooh doctor is not an option as it's 40 min drive and I have to get a toddler to bed.

Do it! Make sure you boil the needle first. The relief when you do it is unbelievable.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 18:04

Gah! Am I going to lose the nail?

Oooh I did this back in June and my finger nail only just came off last week!

I didn't stick a pin through it though, I'd never even thought of it.

WhoNickedMyName · 29/09/2013 18:07

You might keep the nail. I did. My big toenail. But it has never been the same since.

SoupDragon · 29/09/2013 18:09

Heat a large sewing needle in a flame until it is glowing cherry red. touch it firmly to the center of the bruised area of the nail. Press with firm but gentle pressure. Reheat needle and repeat if necessary

I was sure it needs to be hot - I thought you were meant to use a paper clip though

FlapJackFlossie · 29/09/2013 18:11

Yes, SoupDragon is right. You must heat it so it burns through the nail.

ohmeohmyforgotlogin · 29/09/2013 18:12

They did it for me with special cauterising thing at A and E. And x rayed to make sure hadn't broken it

IfYouLoveSomebodyLetThemSleep · 29/09/2013 18:17

Envy bork.

Good luck! Can you get someone else to do it for you? There is no way I could inflict that on myself.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 18:17

Blurg. Will go burn my nail then and report back.

There's no klaxon for gross nails is there?

Actually it is much better to do it with a heated-up paperclip - makes a bigger hole.

Clobbered · 29/09/2013 18:59

Yes, A and E do it with a red hot paperclip - you could hold it with a pair of pliers. Is there anyone else who could do it for you? You need to press fairly firmly. Good luck, and it really will feel better afterwards!

Did anyone else do an involuntary fanjo flinch at this thread title?

Souredstones · 29/09/2013 19:06

I did this when I buggered up my toe nails (dropped a large weight on them) it really works and instant relief

IfYouLoveSomebodyLetThemSleep · 29/09/2013 19:07

How's it going? Wine to numb the pain

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 29/09/2013 19:08

I had to do this as part of my nurse training in A&E back in the 80's, it was fab, just be aware of how far the pressurised blood may squirt!

mrsmindcontrol · 29/09/2013 19:10

My DS3 had this done to his toenail in A&E when he was 2. Instant relief from pain. There's no nerve endings on nails so you won't feel it.

Whojamaflip · 29/09/2013 19:12

last time this happened the ooh heated a straightened out paper clip and used that to make a hole in the nail_ worked a treat Grin

Lilyloo · 29/09/2013 19:12

Bleuu , good luck with that

Ezio · 29/09/2013 19:15

Also if the nail goes, it might come back if theres the fibre to grow it.

When DD was a toddler, she opened a door over her toe, it pulled the nail up over a few weeks it fell off, and eventually it grew back.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 19:15

Well that was gruesome and interesting!

Burned safety pin straight it to the centre... Gusher!

Still throbbing but not as bad. The side is the blackest.

I can't believe I'm doing DIY nail nursing on MN!

OP posts:
complexnumber · 29/09/2013 19:17

You have an obligation to all that is gross on MN to carry this through now.

And we expect photos as well.

(Possibly even better than a pus squeezing thread!)

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 19:17

jesusinacabbagevan

My fanjo is firmly clenched. This is grim.
