Aibu to stick a pin in my black fingernail?

I've just shut my thumb in a car door. It's not broken, but the whole nail has instantly gone black/blue.

I've run it under cold tap and iced it. The pain from the pressure under the nail is hideous.

Would I be unreasonable to stick a pin in the nail as it's cracked at the base and there's a bit if blood anyway?

Ooh doctor is not an option as it's 40 min drive and I have to get a toddler to bed.

Bloomin' 'eck!

I missed it.

Ezio · 29/09/2013 19:18

Oh complex dont, that video on youtube, had me heaving for weeks.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/09/2013 20:00

Theincidental Oh FFS! Mine was just starting to relax; now it's screamed and tried to crawl back up itself.

Loopytiles · 29/09/2013 20:07

Ouch! Go for it eith DIY draining.

Lost my big toenail 2 years ago, dropped heavy object. Before they punctured the nail to drain the blood it really really hurt! If it happened again would defo puncture it myself. They said the pressure might build again and if it did should deal with it myself, did so a few times. The nail dropped off about a month later, grew back but with yucky bit and 2 years on is still not right.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 20:13

It still bleddy hurts!

Have tried adding a photo but either MN won't permit auch grossness or the file size is too big!

Must have control and not google the youtube video.

This is making me feel quite odd, knew I shouldn't have read it.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 20:22

Photo up!

I think doctors in the morning might be in order to get it properly sorted.

I reckon the nail is a goner!

Shes a happy 6 yr old now, and she has all 10 toenails.

How she did not cry at losing the toenail i will never know, that kid is hard as nails.

Absolutmum · 29/09/2013 21:02

Congratulations, you have trefined your nail. Used to work in casualty and loved trefining, we used an opened up paperclip heated in a flame.

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 21:05

Trefined???!!!

That word reminds me of trepanning (which I think is drilling holes in the skull!)

Oh dear. I have been holding into to being brave and conscious all night, but that word is sending me over the edge!

Question now is how to protect it when I go to bed, or faint...

You really need to check that there isn't a fracture to the thumb (by getting an x-Ray) asap as you've now given what was a sterile wound the chance to introduce infection in via the hole into the wound under the nail that caused the bleeding & (if broken) into the middle if the bone which could cause ++ probs.

I'm speaking as a former A&E nurse who became a nurse practitioner - I'd have been hauled over the coals for cauterising without an XR first.

I'm not meaning to scare you, but there's a good reason why the ref point for how to do this has been you tube /on here rather than a first aid manual.

Fingers crossed you make an unremarkable recovery x

mumofweeboys · 29/09/2013 21:22

Braver than me. I made OH take ds (5) to a&e to have his pricked, spoke to out of hours doc and he said we had to go in as poor ds finger just kept swelling

Theincidental · 29/09/2013 21:24

Oh loftyjen I was worried someone would say something like that.

A and e would have been an horrific journey at toddler dinner time on a Sunday - it's over an hour away and the waiting times are hellish.

I promise I will head to the docs in the morning and get it checked.

In favour of non break - I can move it easily, there's no swelling and no pain other than the pressure on the nail.

But... You are absolutely right!

Beamur · 29/09/2013 21:26

Yep to Loftyjens comments - DD dropped a jar on her toe last year, lots of blood under the nail. Didn't go to A&E until a week later when it started looked red and infected, they x-rayed it before lancing it in case there was a fracture as she would have needed AB's too.

southeastastra · 29/09/2013 21:26

oh dear effing me why did i just watch that youtube clip

NoisyDay · 29/09/2013 21:32

Oh wow you are so brave, well done.i very nearly passed out
