to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

My DP has swanned off to work taking both e cigs with him. The swine. I have just called him and snarled 'do you have both of them?' and he rooted in his pockets and said 'oh yeah...'

So I have no e cig in the house.

I was going to buy a spare one anyway for occasions like this. But I didn't WANNA traipse into town today in the cold and rain.

Cantabile · 14/11/2013 14:03

Doin, I use 1.8 juice, and smoked at least 40 a day. It's weaker than was recommended for as heavy a smoker as I was, but I find it fine, and don't want to get stronger if I can help it. I now smoke between 10 and 15 a day, but I vape a lot!

I am assuming that at some unspecified time in the future, I'll have worked my way down to 0 nicotine and no fags.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 18:36

Today I have mostly been vaping Dekang YuXi Grin It's a dryish tobacco flavour and is surprisingly not that bad. I had been expecting the Chinese tobacco flavours to be foul because nobody seems to buy them (outside of China, presumably?). This is the first of them I've tried and it's given me hope that there might be one or two absolute gems in what I've bought.

It's not the best tobacco flavour I've had but it's certainly not the worst! (that would be Hangsen Desert Shit Ship) It has an odd fragrant note which I'm not that keen on but I've just opened a beer and it's suddenly tasting a lot more pleasant in conjunction with that.

LOOK!!! They've made a new gs-h5 with a built in skirty bit Smile

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 18:57

Oooh - shiny! It seems to take different atomizers to the other ones though which would be a massive pain in the bum.

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 18:59

Plus the atomizers they have for them are really high resistance.

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 19:16

Does anyone want almost 10ml of 18mg 90/10 mulled wine flavour (lucky dip from the Dutch place) and 3ml of low nicotine VG Regal flavour (a tobacco one I got as a free sample from paradise vape)?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 19:30

Really? They look like standard old-style evod heads. The link is to x9 heads but there's a discussion that says those are compatible with evods and protanks. I reckon they're all the same thing in varying qualities. Worth a go for £1.87? I'll stick one in with my next order and let you know Smile

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 19:37

Those x9 heads look shit though.

Does anybody ever buy yellow clearos if they have a choice? They always remind me of piss.

MaggieMcGill · 14/11/2013 19:41

Queen can you explain the resistance thing please? I have some dual coil 2ohm clearos that I ordered from the Netherlands but i've not used them yet and I have 2.4 dual coils coming from FT. I think when I ordered them I was thinking the higher the number the better but i think that is wrong and I still don't really understand it. What will the difference be when I'm using them on a Vv battery?

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 19:57

Lower resistance gives better throat hit and better flavour on fruity flavours as far as I know. I think some of the cheap CE4s that I got with the paradise vape kits were quite high resistance and most of them were alright for the first puff or two and then just felt a bit scorched and unpleasant although some of them were ok on non fruity flavours.

I've mostly been using 2.4 ohms and quite like them - it just struck me that 2.5 or 2.6 might not be as good and there's no option for lower resistance on the one plenty linked to.

As with everything in vaping, it's a case of trying a few things out and seeing what you like best. I was really lucky in that I liked the first flavours, nicotine strength, tank and resistance I tried.

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 20:04

Definitely worth a go for £1.87 Plenty. Do let me know how you get on with it.

Nobody wants my mulled wine and tobacco liquids?

MaggieMcGill · 14/11/2013 20:06

Ah! It's mostly fruit flavours I use, I seem to have preferred them right from the start but I do love a good old throat hit. Actually I think I've been getting a bit carried away with my new vv battery as I've had a bit of a cough and sore throat today Grin

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 20:12

You'll probably want 1.8ohms then - best for throat hit and fruit flavours.

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 20:13

(Although I've not actually tried 1.8ohms myself - I'm waiting for my FT order for them).

MaggieMcGill · 14/11/2013 20:17

Thanks! That's good to know for the future.

teenagetantrums · 14/11/2013 20:18

Queen i will have a go at your mulled wine and tobacco liquid if you still have it. I have some cinnamon if anyone wants it , does not agree with me i think its 18mg strength will have to look when i get home. Queen pm me if you still have it am happy to pay for postage.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 21:23

Resistance ... it's all to do with Ohm's law - V=IxR or I=V/R or R=V/I

So what does that mean?

V is voltage. A standard eGo battery is 3.7V. This is what you can change with a variable voltage battery.

R is resistance. This the ohm value of your coil. Most seem to be either 2.4/2.5ish or 1.8 ohms.

I is current in amperes (I'm a bit vague about this one, it's closely related to watts, which you can change if you have a variable wattage battery). This is a measure of how hot your coil will get and so is the important number.

If you do a google image search for 'e-cig volts chart' you'll find lots of pretty coloured charts showing the best wattage to aim for (generally between 4 and 8ish watts) and various combinations of battery voltages and atomiser resistances for achieving that. As you will see, you can either use a low resistance and low voltage or a high resistance and high voltage to achieve pretty much the same result. Variable wattage batteries read the resistance of your atomiser and calculate the correct number of volts to achieve the desired wattage.

Different liquids will have their own 'sweet spot' and everyone will have their own personal preferences as well.

Basic guidelines:

If you're using a standard eGo battery (this will be 3.7V when fully charged) , you'll get more vapour from a 1.8ohm coil. Don't use anything below 1.3 ohms.

If you have a VV battery with any atomiser, crank it up a bit at a time until it starts to taste burnt, then back off a bit. That's the most vapour you'll get from it.

I'm left wondering what the point is of higher resistance coils if they need more power to achieve the same results. Maybe it's something to do with surface area as there are more turns on the coil?

HettiePetal · 14/11/2013 21:24

I haven't read the whole thread (943 messages! Forgive me!) but could someone very quickly answer a quick question.

I want to order a vaping kit tonight. Do the flavour e-liquids have nicotine in them?

Ta :)

HettiePetal · 14/11/2013 21:28

Also: is this a good kit to get started? Here

Apologies - I expect this has all been asked and answered upthread, but I'm about to order

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 21:30

Hettie, yes, generally, but you can get zero nicotine flavours as well.

HettiePetal · 14/11/2013 21:32

Thanks, Plenty! (I def. want nicotine for now!)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/11/2013 21:33

Yes that looks like a good kit. You have both cartomisers and a clearo in there so you can see what you like. Batteries look good and it's all proper branded stuff Smile

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 21:40

That looks like a really good starter kit Hettie. When you buy the liquids you normally have a choice of nicotine strengths - either go for a mid strength one (14-18mg) or a low strength and a high strength that should compliment each other so you can figure out the sort of strength you need (like cherry and vanilla). Better still, go for an assortment of 5-10ml flavours and strengths.

QueenStromba · 14/11/2013 21:41

If you google for "vape escape discount code" you'll probably find a 10-20% discount voucher - most online vape shops have them.
