I thought it was necessary to take CB off those on 50k so why are those on a lot more getting yet more money given to them?

It's not fair.

IhateGO- actually... it may apply to Independent Schools.. because the free fruit does! Confused

I imagine that will make retro choke on her cornflakes! Grin

Most Independent schools I know don't allow packed lunches either, so all those attending will benefit. Hmm...

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:43

The power we had to e-mail them this week for self assessment(it's fraud if you don't).Quickest reply to an e-mail dp has ever had.Kind of galling as we're not married so they'd have no way of knowing. In one week we were a family enough to take CB off but not family enough to get MTA.

Good god you've got it bad retro. You're actually telling me what you think I'm going to write in my posts now!! I mean all this focus on me is flattering but a little scary!!!

Seriously: you're the one starting threads constantly banging on about how tough it is being a SAHM with a high earning husband and wanting us to get the violins out. And now you're starting on FSM, it seems out of sheer resentment that your children are too old to personally benefit..

Honestly, the self serving attitude is really depressing. This is a good thing: it will have a positive impact, reduce any stigma of FSM and is likely to have a very good effect on all children's well being.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:46

Could you imagine, how bonkers would that be!

Thepowerof3 · 18/09/2013 21:46

Oh dear I hadn't heard anything about it, so I should email hmrc then. Thanks

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:49

Off you trot then if you don't like it.

And no aside from the unfairness it's not a good idea for too many reasons to mention all listed on the other thread.

Thepowerof3 · 18/09/2013 21:50

We don't have a combined or single income of over 50 grand so do I still need to self asses

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:50

The power you get a letter, you've got until Jan so no rush.Grin

"Off you trot" rofl - delusions of being the thread police now. Oh dearie me.

While some posters have suggested quite reasoned arguments as to why they don't think the FSM idea is as good as it appears. However, resentment is never a good basis for a point of view. I have concerns about quality of meals, and I would be very against any resulting hike in prices. Those are reservations, but overall I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:56

Well I don't.

It's shocking that some schools still serve up stodgy carb laden food too. My children's school has had a complete revolution over the last 5 years and they never have chips, salt is a no no (remember how we used to have salt cellars on the tables years ago and you could drown your dinner in it?) and there is always a good choice of veg and salad. There needs to be a focus on bringing all schools up to par along with the introduction of free meals

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 21:58

Retro, dh emailed HMRC to get this self-assessment code and we haven't heard anything yet. Mind you, they didn't send us a letter either. We've contacted them as don't want to get fined, etc, but if we hear nothing, will we still get fined for not telling them Confused and worried.

I don't think very wealthy people will get fsm, as their children are very likely to be privately educated.

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 22:03

When I had free school meals in the 80's, there was huge stigma attached to it. We were singled out and the teachers used to say "will all those on benefit dinners line up". I've never forgotten the pain and humiliation. I sure as hell hope that we've moved on a lot since those days.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 22:04

It costs money and they've been privatised so aren't under County control.I have a friend who is a very good cook.Said companies are trying to drive out the old higher paid staff to get staff on crappier pay to drive costs down.

I can see a huge money pit ahead.

All these new cooks are going to have to be trained. The logistics for schools without kitchens.

If giving free lunch saves the life of a child then let's support it?

Retropear · 18/09/2013 22:08

Chun well

Non crappy school buildings
Smaller classes
Not axing TAs
Breakfast clubs
More reading support
More quality books
Not losing libraries......

I could go on but you get the drift.

retro my understanding is that if you are a higher Rate tax payer you won't get the married allowance if and when it turns up....married or not

If you are too "wealthy" for CBA you won't get the married allowance either!

Retropear · 18/09/2013 22:09

Ihate- they have

QuintessentialShadows · 18/09/2013 22:11

I think you may find that the people earning from 100k and up are not taking up as many of these resources anyway. They will have private health care, send their children to private schools, and I would be very surprised if the took their child to a nursery for their free 15 hours allowance. Rocking up with their CX90 or Lexus and going into the nursery manager cap in hand to fill out the forms for the free 15 hours would not sit right with many of them.

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 22:13

I reckon you'd struggle to afford private school on 100k these days. I'd be happy to test it out though Grin

Rufus43 · 18/09/2013 22:23

ihate depends on how many children you have, where you live, whether you have always earned that amount or just started recently, what your outgoings are, debts etc

And the nursery 15 hours is for pre school, I know a few people on a lot of money and they sent their children to pre school like the rest of us and their kids don't go to private school
