I thought it was necessary to take CB off those on 50k so why are those on a lot more getting yet more money given to them?

It's not fair.

I agree those on higher incomes with losing CB (I've lost it myself) but it is bonkers that it's done on single incomes not the household income.

And now I find out they can't afford to give me £80 a month CB for DS (fair enough) but they can afford to give me free school meals for 3 years. It is a bit nuts.

Maybe means testing would cost more than not and they just want to make sure children are fed, or something. But I agree it does seem a bit crazy

Stillhopingstillhere · 17/09/2013 20:44

I'd rather have my child benefit back.
I'm still very bitter about losing the money when couples earning nearly twice as much keep it. It's not so much about us losing it but the injustice of it, who does it hit? The sahm.

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 20:51

we lost our CB too it isn't a lot but with 1 wage coming it it is bloody irritating that a couple earning more still get it it doesnt make sense to be what does taking Benefit off single income homes achieve, Id rather have it back Ta muchy

I do realise we are not poor or poverty stricken it just seems unfair

Freshlysqueezed · 17/09/2013 20:52

Yep but the sahm Mum isnt paying childcare bills so it is in fact quite fair

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 20:53

who does it hit? The sahm.

that the parents at home is devalued I know this is not a wage but you know what i mean, many sahm rely on this money, it also affect parents who are finacially(sp) abused

Changebagsandgladrags · 17/09/2013 20:54

People don't claim free school meals, for whatever reason.

Rich people might feed their kids rubbish...or not at all.

This way, all the kids get the same whatever their background without any stigma.

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 20:55

Yep but the sahm Mum isnt paying childcare bills so it is in fact quite fair

child benefit was not intended to pay childcare

Calloh · 17/09/2013 20:57

I think the school dinners thing is because every pupil's achievement has been shown to increase when there is universal school dinners so it is seen to be of benefit to everyone.

i think they are hoping to give a married couple tax break which might help some households who lost CB because of one person'a salary.

Taz1212 · 17/09/2013 20:57

I agree. I don't mind losing CB at all, but it is unfair that we lost it due to one income when there are households with higher incomes still receiving it.

SPBisResisting · 17/09/2013 20:57

What's the story with FSM?

Retropear · 17/09/2013 20:58

And rich families on 300k can afford to pay their childcare bills and school dinners themselves.

If we have to have CB taken off us whilst wealthy families keep it I don't get why they then get even more.Confused

I am confused.

Somerset8 · 17/09/2013 21:03

Ok looks like children in reception, year1 and year 2 will get free school meals from september. Great my children are juniors so we miss out on that too along with the child benefit.

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 21:05

we are just on the cusp of the CB cut off but a couple can have twice as much as we do coming in and still get CB and I believe claim tax credits too,

Me23 · 17/09/2013 21:05

I'd like to know why are "rich" people getting fsm?

WipsGlitter · 17/09/2013 21:05

Families on £300k do not keep their child benefit. I'm not sure what your argument is.

Retropear · 17/09/2013 21:06

Oh I have a friend going through it.

Her partner is loaded,he's horrible. She can't afford to move out and he reuses to pay for childcare. She gets no CB and has to pay for all child related things herself,he is horrible if she needs to ask him for money. She has a not very high paid job working from home,CB would be a real help for her- and for many other families who have lost it.

Kind of galling seeing those on a lot more getting it and help with childcare and fsm.

what crescent moon just said happens in many homes, not mine but I do know women whos partners keep money from them , CB is a lifeline to some parents

ReallyTired · 17/09/2013 21:06

I think that child benefit in its present form should be scrapped entirely. I would prefer to see the money spent on helping low income families, universal school meals, nursery education for two year olds and improving the school nursing/ health visiting service.

I think its totally nuts a family with two 49K earners get to keep all their child benefit, but a single mother on 50K loses it.

Different incomes go further in different parts of the country. A family on 50K may well struggle in London or leafy surrey, but a family on 30K can live reasonably in other parts of the UK. So much depends on housing costs. Providing universal school dinners ensures that the money goes to the chidlren and that every state school child in the UK has a decent meal.

This concession does not help the super rich families as they mostly use private schools. Honestly if you had 300K would you use state education?

Bonsoir · 17/09/2013 21:08

The richest families won't get free school meals because their DC go to private school.

Bodeccia · 17/09/2013 21:09

I don't begrudge free food for any child, don't care what their background is.

Freshlysqueezed · 17/09/2013 21:10

Surely a household with two full time workers on 30k each paying 1k a month in childcare needs cb more than a household with one wage of 6ok and a sahm mum . Beliieve me the househokd with the sahm is financially far better off even without the cb! I just dont get why people dont see this

ringaringarosy · 17/09/2013 21:11

Well you could say they are putting more in so why shouldnt they get something out?
