I thought it was necessary to take CB off those on 50k so why are those on a lot more getting yet more money given to them?

It's not fair.

OP posts:
Retropear · 18/09/2013 13:06

How exactly?

It isn't benefitting mine as they're not getting it even though they eat more and cost more.

How does it benefit wealthy children who can afford to be fed on organic yaks milk?

How does it benefit my dc who lost their CB to fund the wealthy having it?

My last post kind of addresses dreaming's, too.

I get where you're coming from but I cannot see this programme as eroding anyone's liberties. Of course the state shouldn't provide everything - but free school lunches seem a pragmatic contribution to improving the lot of all children (and subsequently of wider society). Surely that's a Good Thing?

dreamingofsun · 18/09/2013 13:11

spokefor - that sounds terrible. why didn't you get fed? I know i have the odd glitch, which everyone berates me for on here, and forget the kids lunch money but your situation sounds more extensive?

Retropear · 18/09/2013 13:11

But children have had money taken off them to fund it,many don't need it and half aren't getting it.Confused

Retro have you read any of the report? Confused

Retropear · 18/09/2013 13:13

What report?

Enlighten me.

OP posts:
christinarossetti · 18/09/2013 13:13

I think that's it.

The same people are being hit over and over again - low income, working poor, people with disabilities, single parents - whilst those in the middle continue to benefit from an artificially lowered interest rate.

And those at the top are just laughing, as usual.

Bonsoir · 18/09/2013 13:20

It is a very bad idea for governments to chop and change what they do and don't pay for (or subsidise) year on year. People cannot budget ahead effectively.

I am all for increasing the threshold for FSM but I don't think universal FSM for DC in YR, Y1 and Y2 is a good idea at all.

ZingWantsCake · 18/09/2013 17:39

can I ask who would you consider a rich family?

how much money/head (after tax!) would you say is rich?

BooCanary · 18/09/2013 18:12

OP you really are having a spectacular whinge about unfair your situation is.

I would have struggled to be a SAHM as when DD was born DH and I were earning about £23k each. We have spent the past 7 years paying between £500 and 900 a month in childcare. At some points I have only just been breaking even but have carried on as we would have struggled on 1 income long term.

So I get £130 a month in CB, and have saved some money with vouchers. Whoopy doo! The tax I have paid covers that and then a load more.

I do think the CB changes are daft, and the FSM is ill thought out. But be angry at the government, dont waste your life being jealous of others. £60k and the opportunity to sah is a lucky position to be in.

hemel07 · 18/09/2013 18:53

My dd3 starts school next september, my older 2 take packed lunches, I want her to do the same. I lost my child benefit, I am a nurse who works 15hrs a week, at weekends so we don't have child care costs. This means we get little time together as a family though. I would much rather have my CHB back (dh earns just over the threshold and pays a massive amount of tax) and not have a school meal, which she wont be having anyway. Rubbish idea.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 18:57

Boo you know nothing about my situation past or present(or that of anybody else whinging),you're all right Jack.HmmMaybe others unhappy are as deserving as you.

You also dont know other peoples situations, OP. And I'm not trying to make out 'I'm alright Jack' ( we are faaaaaaar from well off). But the reality is, as a previous poster mentioned, its not a race to the bottom.

BooCanary · 18/09/2013 19:11

Plus I'm sure everyone can list things they've missed out on, for example:
I don't live in England so my DCs won't get FSM.
I only had 6m maternity leave with DC 1 whereas people now get 9.
Because I work I can't benefit from the free summer play scheme in my area as it is first come first served so I have to spend loads on private play schemes.

Swings and roundabouts....

Retropear · 18/09/2013 19:24

Chun I fail to see how wealthy children eating a free meal will help poorer children. They eat together anyway, the logistics won't change.

It's right to question governments saying one thing one minute then contradicting themselves the next,it's right to point out unfairness. It's not a good way to govern.

Swings and roundabouts- there are a lot of things I think are unfair that don't have an impact on me,I'll still point them out too if you don't mind.Hmm

Thepowerof3 · 18/09/2013 19:27

How do they know how much our income is?

Retropear · 18/09/2013 19:35

There is no stigmatising re free school dinners, there just isn't.

Just how?

They're sorted out on the computer exactly the same way as people who pay on computer or by cash.

Dinner ladies, the recipients and other children have no way of knowing.Confused

Considering how few people have them,in some schools I suspect there would be zero take up anyway.

Totally agree with Boocanarys posts

We could all sit and whinge about things we 'missed out on'... Eg I had only 12 weeks maternity leave, DH had a day off for each birth, tax credits didn't exist, we had to pay every penny of childcare ourselves and mortgage rates were double figures. Frankly anyone having a baby in 2013 is pretty darn lucky in my book, and when we hear SAHM with husbands earning 60k plus having yet another whine because mr and mrs bloggs down the road who both work and have to pay for childcare get to keep CB forgive us for not overflowing with sympathy. And as for these hypothetical couples earning 300k jointly- FGS- imagine BOTH doing the sort of high pressure work which commands that type of salary.... It must be bloody full on and such families would probably need a nanny to provide the kind of childcare they'd need ... Not to mention the fact that such a couple would pay SHIT loads more a month in tax than they'd get in CB. I guess some people are so full of resentment that they'd rather a person stopped getting £150 quid or so CB a month than contributed several thousand a month in tax. Bonkers ....

Retropear · 18/09/2013 20:52

I think any teachers would be insulted to hear the stigmatising augment. When I was teaching it was impossible for kids to know and not keeping private info confidential was serious.

The many reasons why this is a bad idea are listed on the other thread and in the media.

Henry Dimbleby drew up The School Food Plan a mate of Gove's who has a catering business.Hmm

Sorry the 3- 5% of kids raising attainment isn't enough to warrant nearly a billion being spent on it and squandered on kids who don't need it.I'll wager there are far better ways to rise attainment on a wider scale(smaller classes anyone).

A strong decent government doesn't say one thing one minute and then do the opposite the next.Aside from the unfairness it's weak and worrying. If there are no scruples on the mundane issues it's worrying for the big.Unfairness isn't right and should be pointed out.

OP posts:
Retropear · 18/09/2013 20:53

Ahhhh the anti Sahp posters have arrived.Hmm

OP posts:
janey68 · 18/09/2013 20:56

What a weak 'argument' to think that anyone who disagrees with you is anti SAHP.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 20:56

Families on 50-60k losing CB whist those on £80,£100k keep it will never be fair however you dress it up particularly when said families get help with childcare on top.
