I thought it was necessary to take CB off those on 50k so why are those on a lot more getting yet more money given to them?

It's not fair.

Wishful thinking retropear! Far too busy at work to even read MN most days Grin and don't mind whether parents stay home or not- up to them, just don't expect people to get the violins out for SAHP with high earning partners who are just busting a gut with Envy at anyone they think might be getting something they're not! If they're really so consumed by jealousy they could always get their partner to take a lower paid job and keep CB !!

I think the free school meals are a good idea- there is a wealth of evidence about the positive impacts. No, my children won't benefit from them as they're far too old- but hey, guess what, that doesn't mean I'm jealous of people whose children will

BooCanary · 18/09/2013 21:10

I'm not anti sahp! But if I was a sahp I certainly wouldn't be moaning about those who work getting childcare vouchers.

I understand you are fed up with the Government Op, they are a joke. But please don't get sucked into their ploy to divide and rule by setting people up against each other.

Rich v poor
Wohp v sahp
Employed v unemployed
Etc etc etc....

Its by doing this that they get away with everything, because we are all so busy thinking we have it worst, we lose sight of the bigger picture!

ringaringarosy · 18/09/2013 21:13

i think if things werent supposed to be so bad at the moment (i say supposed as we are fine but im aware that others are struggling)this would be a great i dea,and in an ideal world it wold just be normal, all school meals would be free for everyone, they would be healthy and varied and interesting and the kids would eat together properly on plates not prison trays and it would be lovely, but it doesnt seem a very good time for it,i think theyve just done it to get some votes tbh.

janey68 · 18/09/2013 21:13

The research is very convincing- far more so than I actually expected it to be. And all children benefit- even though the poorer ones appear to have the greater gains, it's undoubtedly something which is likely to have a positive impact across society.
A good thing in my book.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:15

Wealth of evidence.Think you need to read the other thread.

Yes I'm sure many just over the threshold are considering their optionsHmm shame they have to when money can clearly be squandered on those far wealthier.

Wouldn't mind so much if the gov made up it's mind. One minute we're wealthy the next we're not,one minute we're a family and the next we're not,one minute universal benefits are wrong and the next they're not.One minute they can means test aaaaand the next they can't.

Lets hope they never have to push the nuclear button.

Oh and wouldn't have a problem with child care vouchers if CB was based on joint family income.

Janey for somebody so busy you sure seem to lurk a lot and find any thread you can put the boot in to sahms.

I agree that the idea of a nutritious hot meal being available for all primary school children is a good idea. However, I am concerned about how this will be funded. Bearing in mind the government told us that we have this huge deficit, blah, blah, blah. My concern is that we will have to cut from other budgets to fund this election bribe. The government have said we are too in debt to fund universal child benefit and a myriad of other things. I just want to know where they will magic the 600 million needed to fund this and the other 600 million needed to fund the marriage tax break.

janey68 · 18/09/2013 21:23

Oh grow up retropear. I'm not putting the boot in to SAHP at all. If I wanted to, I would be one myself. It's a perfectly valid choice if you can afford it and want to do it. I just disagree strongly with the view that SAHP with higher rate tax payer partners are the most hard done by element of society.
Give over now- personal attacks are really tiresome and make you look insecure about the choices you've made in your life

racmun · 18/09/2013 21:23

The most important thing surely is whether the food is going to be of a reasonable/decent standard.
Just look at the awful food served in most hospitals, if its anything like that then I suspect people who can afford to will start sending their children in with decent packed lunch and those who can't will be at the mercy of which ever catering company wins the contract to make loads of money out of this idea.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:25

Who said anything about being the most hard done by element of society?

I'll say what I like thanks re your posting history.

Rac somebody on the other thread said a lot of children are going to be worse fed as parents providing a good evening meal won't now bother and kids will just have the boiled to buggary, carb heavy slop many schools serve as their main meal.

OP posts:
ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 21:28

Also will the price of school dinners increase? In my experience, when government steps in with 'help', the price of everything increases accordingly. Look at child care, tax credits, house prices. People charge more, as they know government (us) will foot the bill.

Viviennemary · 18/09/2013 21:29

I can see why SAHP's are annoyed about this. But I do agree with the free school meals for every child although I worry about the wastage and children not eating the food. And going to work costs money not just in childcare but in travelling expenses, clothes and lunches and other things.

bsc · 18/09/2013 21:30

I really, really don't think any families on 300k will be receiving FSM.
Their children will be in the independent sector.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:33

Ihate so do you reckon those of us still paying will pay more for crappier meals. Our ks2 kids already get less and not what they choose because they run out.

OP posts:
janey68 · 18/09/2013 21:34

Work out how much tax a couple on 300k pay every month. If you still complain that their children might get a FSM then you're bonkers.

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 21:35

That's a point bsc. will this apply to people in Independent schools? I would hope it would just be for state primaries, but you never know with this lot.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:36

I expect many on 100k won't be.

I wonder where all the money for the extra kitchens, equipment, cutlery, transport will come from.

Dp thinks they'll lower the CB threshold again.

Thepowerof3 · 18/09/2013 21:37

I'm still not sure how they know what your income is in order to make the decision to take away b

racmun · 18/09/2013 21:37

IMO the money would be better spent offering free breakfast to each child who wants it. Read a shocking statistic on the back of my crunchy nut cornflakes earlier that 1 in 7 children don't get breakfast!!
It would be a lot cheaper to implement and those who need FSM would still get them but those who don't won't.

Also as someone said up post the 'benefits' of this scheme probably come from the children sitting down eating together. Do schools not make packed lunch children sit down at a table anymore- it could easily be done if they don't!

Thepowerof3 · 18/09/2013 21:37

Child benefit

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/09/2013 21:38

That would be one of my concerns Retro. When ever the government steps in and throws money at something, the provider always charges more as they know they can. I would think it could put the prices up potentially. My dc take packed lunches any way as they are not keen on school dinners. They do have the fish and chips on Friday though. They won't qualify in any case as KS2.

Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:39

Going by that argument Janey anybody paying tax could argue against paying for those who don't.Hmm

Same old, same old.Next you'll be telling us how rich you are and pay more tax than anybody else.Wink

OP posts:
Retropear · 18/09/2013 21:40

Rac my dc eat with the dinners.

They don't Thepower. They are expecting us to self assess to HMRC and tell them ourselves.
