I don't know how I feel about this but a Facebook post has really made me think if a school canteen is halal or kosher then isn't it imposing a faith on its pupils? Or is it? I don't know so I defer to the wise ladies of Mumsnet for a decision

AT

You are allowed to say 'traditional ' like 'traditional Muslim' and also 'traditional ' like 'traditional Welsh' and you can even say 'traditional ' like 'traditional Greek' AS LONG AS THE COUNTRY IS NOT BRITAIN.

Saying 'traditional British' makes you racist...although I am not at all certain quite why.

IceBeing · 18/09/2013 09:31

So, pork is a traditional Christian food...and certainly a traditional British one....so IF (and it's a big IF in bold) other religious view points are causing pork to be banned from school canteens then I would have a problem with that.

My guess is not though...I mean presumably it is enough that the pork not be in the food...not that pork cannot be in the kitchen?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 18/09/2013 09:38

We had this once before. People outraged over halal meat at school.

No one seemed to grasp the fact that unless your kids went to a school that sourced local produce if you are giving your kids the school meals then the chances are the meat is the cheapest most basic standard allowed byreated lole shit meat going. It really is no better or worse than halal.

The slaughter of a halal animal is called "zabihah" and there are certain guidelines to follow:

Allah's (God's) name must be pronounced during slaughter.
The instrument must be very sharp to ensure humane slaughter. The animal must be slit at the throat.
The animal must not be unconscious
The animal must be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry. Eating blood is not halal.
These steps must be accomplished by a Muslim or the People of the Book (Christian or Jew.) Many observant Muslims find kosher meat acceptable.
The animal must have been fed a natural diet that did not contain animal by-products.

MotherofBear · 18/09/2013 09:50

How does meat that has had a name pronounced over it during slaughter affect anybody in any way whatsoever? I mean, seriously - if there were two chickens born from the same hen and one was slaughtered quickly with a knife whilst someone said 'Allah', and the other one was given an electric shock and then slaughtered whilst nobody said anything much, what would happen if you ate the first one and not the second?

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 18/09/2013 09:52

In regard to religion, surely eating Halal meat is absolutely no different to someone else praying for you without your knowledge. Each has absolutely no actual impact on you.

In regard to animal cruelty, I'm firmly on the fence about whether Halal slaughter is more barbaric than other methods. I'm getting more and more uneasy about eating meat in general these days, and although I'm not ready to go full vegetarian (yet) I'm much pickier about how my food has been treated than I ever used to be.

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 09:56

The phrase "Allah is the greatest" is offensive to many people, just as a prayer saying that he is not would offend many muslims if it was said over their meat.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 18/09/2013 09:57

No more offensive than 'God is the greatest' would be to anyone else in any other religion except Christianity. You aren't being forced to say it. You aren't even being forced to listen to it.

itsonlysubterfuge · 18/09/2013 10:01

Using Halal or Kosher meat means that pork would never be an option, doesn't it? Therefore I would not like it as it limits what choice I have. If I went to a Muslim country I would not ask for pork, but this isn't a Muslim country so I feel the option should be available.

Also, Kosher and Halal are not the same thing.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/09/2013 10:04

It's only offensive to narrow minded people who are unable to respect others beliefs IMO

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 10:05

HopAlongOn - I thought that the prayer means that the muslim deity is greater than the deities of all other religions.

mrsjay · 18/09/2013 10:06

words. Can't anyone answer my questions?

the reasons Butchers might close is supermarkets and folks budgets nothing to do with Halal meat , the highstreets have been changing for years people who do not buy local for whatever reason is the reason people are loosing jobs imo

mehimandthegirls · 18/09/2013 10:06

Great point itsonly

SamG76 · 18/09/2013 10:08

Can you name an atheist army starting a war?

The Khmer Rouge, the cultural revolution in China, the killing of Kulaks in the Ukraine - many of the great acts of mass murder of the last century were carried out by committed atheists. And the Nazis didn't really do God either....

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 18/09/2013 10:08

So the objection is no bacon basically?

Is that really an issue when it can be given for breakfast or in a sandwich for tea.

Cheap pork is chewy and rank.
Undercooked pork is dangerous.

In all honesty it does you a favour.

All religions think their deity is the greatest, that's kind of the point surely?

mrsjay · 18/09/2013 10:10

It is fine i can keep the pig farmers in business alone I do like a bit of bacon,

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 10:13

QueOnda - What have I written that is "islamophobic"? Please tell me.

Where is the evidence that I have an irrational fear of islam?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 18/09/2013 10:14

Halal seems good enough for people when they get drunk and want a kebab. Or want a pizza or Chinese.

mrsjay · 18/09/2013 10:16

Indian reasturants have halal meat I think, but I do know of people who will not eat foreign muck mind you

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 18/09/2013 10:17

Not to mention that being able to eat meat at school isn't exactly some fundamental right or necessity. It's perfectly possible to have a healthy balanced diet with no meat at lunch time, so just eat the vegetarian option if it offends you so much.

LessMissAbs · 18/09/2013 10:31

Wheresmy are you suggesting that all non Muslims eat takeaways and kebabs? I dont, and I know plenty of people who dont either.

Halal slaughter was 'invented' around a time when more humane methods of slaughter weren't available. We now have industrial levels of mass slaughter at slaughterhouses which halal killing wasn't designed for. Why on earth not use more humane methods when available? Its immoral not to.

I have actually witnessed a halal killing and it was horific, not lest the dragging of a terrified young goat, which broke a leg badly, throught the streets store it was done.

But being white European, I'm presumed too stupid or cossetted to see this? I have actually known slaughtermen in this country from when I was a kid, and they took pride in their work and on not causing undue suffering and bleeding, not lest because its a health risk.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 18/09/2013 10:34

You're perfectly entitled to not want Halal meat served because you find the method of slaughter inhumane (no different to only buying meat from places where the animals have been treated well etc), but some people are objecting to the words said while the meat is slaughtered and that is the point that I find ludicrous.
