I don't know how I feel about this but a Facebook post has really made me think if a school canteen is halal or kosher then isn't it imposing a faith on its pupils? Or is it? I don't know so I defer to the wise ladies of Mumsnet for a decision

Crescentmoon - what about atheists? Are they not allowed to do the job?

And what about all the pig farmers who will lose their livelihoods if schools only allow halal meat to be served?

It does seem that a minority is being allowed to dictate to the majority. Why should someone be forced to say or listen to "Allah is the greatest" just so they can earn a living? What if they don't believe that?

What about traditional British butchers who who will be out of a job? Does nobody care about them?

YouTheCat · 18/09/2013 07:48

How about a bit of a live and let live attitude to religion? Hmm

It would save lives... though not cows.

ivykaty44 · 18/09/2013 07:50

what about if school only offer quorn would that be forcing vegetarian principals on everyone?

ivykaty44 · 18/09/2013 07:52

How about a bit of live and let live attitude to religion - It would save lives...

Can you name an atheist army starting a war? Youthecat

YouTheCat · 18/09/2013 08:03

No I can't because there isn't one as far as I'm aware.

My Hmm was to the attitude expressed above my post, not with reference to my statement.

I believe everyone has the right to express themselves and follow whatever religion they like.

Posts like yours show the.EDL have achieved their aim by peddling such poisonous nonsense online AdventureTed..you sure are trotting out the clichés about "Muslim men taking our jobs"

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 08:13

YouTheCat - what "attitude" is evidenced through the questions I have asked?

Is it wrong to ask questions?

Beastofburden · 18/09/2013 08:14

Given the main issue with kids diets in this country is too much fat, sugar and not enough vegetables... I think a free vegetarian diet throughout school would be very educational and save schools a lot of work. Almost all religious dietary rules centre on meat. Move the meat, remove the work in compliance and the prayer which I too would find offensive as I don't believe in god.

I only eat meat from my local butcher where she can tell me all about it. That means we eat less meat than many people, because it costs more, but we eat enough. During the horse meat scandal she was on local telly being asked how traditional butchers knew they weren't selling horse. She explained very kindly that her meat arrived on the bone, and it was fairly easy for a trained butcher to rrecognise a horse....

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 08:15

Fanjo - I haven't seen any of this EDL stuff. I have a brain of my own.

Can't anyone answer my questions?

Beastofburden · 18/09/2013 08:18

Adventure ted I can only answer one. Traditional British butchers aren't competing in the very cheap end of the market anyway, they won't be supplying schools. There is plenty of high-welfare non-Muslim/Jewish custom out there to support their trade.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/09/2013 08:19

You've seen it on here now. And are now asking those questions. Its not even true about the Halal meat in schools. .1:0 to EDL that they have got you stirred up about it

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 08:24

Fanjo - I care about animals and people. I want answers to questions. Does that make me an EDL supporter?

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 08:25

Fanjo - by the way, my kids' school does have a halal certificate in the canteen.

LessMissAbs · 18/09/2013 08:28

I refuse to eat halal meat and ask whether meat is halal or not. Its a retrogade step in animal welfare, I am not for one moment taken in by the line that all or even most beasts are fully unconscious before their throats are slit, and feel its our duty as human beings to support better conditions for slaughter and animal welfare, not worse for religious reasons.

I hardly eat meat anyway, and dont buy cheap supermarket meat. If I'm out at a restaurant, if the source of the meat isn't given, I ask them and if not satisfied, eat something else or walk out.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/09/2013 08:53

AT..no.but your getting irate about Muslims taking our jobs and imposing their brutal views on us is exactly the divisive thinking they want to encourage.

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 09:03

What irate views? I just asked some sensible obvious questions which I'm hoping someone will answer.

I still haven't read the EDL stuff. I have read research by some vets though. I don't think you should get information from just one source, so I intend to do some more research (this is not the first time I have been concerned about halal meat). I am an intelligent caring person and so this subject concerns me.

purits · 18/09/2013 09:03

If a school turning its canteen halal of kosher is them imposing a faith on people? Of course it is.

Traditionally, round here everyone kept a pig in the back yard and lived off it. Turning a canteen halal / kosher means banning on our traditional porcine foods. I would call that an imposition.

ophelia275 · 18/09/2013 09:06

I've never heard of a school (except Jewish ones) where all kids are forced to eat kosher food. I think it is more common for all food to be halal since there is a much bigger Muslim population in this country than Jewish.

burberryqueen · 18/09/2013 09:06

purits does have a point - yet anyone who makes it is often branded a 'bigot' or similar

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 09:07

I never said anything about "our" jobs either. I thought we were all supposed to be in this society together. As such, we should all expect equality.

Crinkle77 · 18/09/2013 09:13

Is any method of slaughter humane? I am sure there are some appalling practices going on in non-halal abattoirs.

mrsjay · 18/09/2013 09:17

oh goodness me Traditional and Brittish in one post well done adventure ted , butchers have nothing to do with slaughter houses butchers do not slaughter their own meat, our very scottish Butcher has meat from their own farm and they have started selling some Halal meat,

AdventureTed · 18/09/2013 09:23

mrsjay - there is nothing wrong with these words. Can't anyone answer my questions?
