I don't know how I feel about this but a Facebook post has really made me think if a school canteen is halal or kosher then isn't it imposing a faith on its pupils? Or is it? I don't know so I defer to the wise ladies of Mumsnet for a decision

Does your faith say anything about how your meat is killed? no. Does your kids eating halal meat affect their choice of religion? Does the chicken come with a Koran?
no, so how does it impose a faith on you. You have animals killed for meet, don't get precious about how its done when it makes no differnce to you.

Souredstones · 17/09/2013 18:46

It's a hypothetical based on a Facebook post

PeppiNephrine · 17/09/2013 18:48

Oh, and lots of muslims eat kosher meat, since it is the same as as halal meat. Same method, no difference. So no uproar. Hmm

ConferencePear · 17/09/2013 18:49

I wouldn't eat halal meat so that would rule me out.

hackmum · 17/09/2013 18:50

Shallishanti: here's a link about Sikhs and halal, but there are several other sites that include info about it (including Wikipedia). According to this link, Sikhs are also banned from eating kosher meat:

'Kosher food tends to be quite unpalatable to those unused to it.'

tosh. I am currently eating stir fried rice. Its all kosher. As is the water I am drinking and the coke I had earlier. And the apple I had.
All pretty palatable.

hackmum · 17/09/2013 18:53

By the way, there's an excellent article here about why killing an animal using the traditional stunning method used in abattoirs is less humane than halal slaughter:

reggiebean · 17/09/2013 18:53

PeppiNephrine Kosher and Halal aren't the same by any means, but Muslims are allowed to eat Kosher if a Halal option isn't available, whereas you're not allowed to eat Halal if you're Jewish.

Sorry, link again:

kosher meat is usually tastier as Jews cannot use the less tender cuts. The bad news is that it costs about four times as much so I can't see a school canteen going kosher unless it is a Jewish school.

Jolleigh · 17/09/2013 18:55

Concerned about the number of people here who seem to think that how the animals are slaughtered is completely irrelevant.

Visit a traditional slaughterhouse and a Halal one, as I have, then come back and see if you can still honestly claim it's the same.

Make informed choices people. The OP obviously doesn't think you can 'catch' religious beliefs from eating Halal meat.

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/09/2013 18:56

DD2 goes to a vegetarian school. Job done, no worries about halal, kosher, whatever.

I cook a lovely brisket, Bonsoir, perfectly acceptable and delicious to all who eat it.

PeppiNephrine · 17/09/2013 18:57

They are, kosher is seen as a subset of halal.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_and_Jewish_dietary_laws_compared

The actual method is the same (the blood, the spinal cord etc) its the rituals around it that differ a little.

BMW6 · 17/09/2013 18:57

I wonder how "humane" slaughterhouses are Hmm ?
As I understand it, in Halal and Kosher slaughtering the animal's throat is cut by an expert with a very sharp blade.
I would have thought that it would be a swify and relatvely painless death.

I often buy Halal lamb from Asda - the way in which the animal has been dispatched in pretty irrelevant to me, for the above reason.

reggiebean · 17/09/2013 18:59

MrsSchadenfreude A veggie school!? They have those?! Shock God things have changed since I was a kid! Grin

PeppiNephrine · 17/09/2013 18:59

Lots of people think its the "traditional method" which is the nasty one.
You're killing an animal to eat it. Talking about humane methods is just a sop to your own conscience anyway.

burberryqueen · 17/09/2013 18:59

with halal slaughter the knife is so sharp that the spinal cord is severed immediately and there is no more suffering than with 'traditional' methods, maybe even less.

What do you think, that 'traditional' slaughter houses are all lovely and humane? well think again
and as for
Kosher food tends to be quite unpalatable to those unused to it -
sorry that is just rubbish, i have often eaten snacks from Jewish deli's in e.g. Golders Green and i would challenge anyone to tell the difference, except that it is definitely fresh unlike some places.

YouTheCat · 17/09/2013 18:59

I haven't claimed it's the same. But it is irrelevant to me.

Dead is dead.

Dawndonnaagain · 17/09/2013 18:59

This is yet another way whereby our choices are being completely eradicated in preference of muslims.

Kosher food tends to be quite unpalatable to those unused to it.

Hmm
TaperJeanGirl · 17/09/2013 19:00

All the meat in my kids school is halal, guess it makes sense as about half the school are Muslim, as far as I am aware there aren't any Jewish kids there, doesn't bother me as my kids are all veggie, but have had my kids told in the past a dish is fine for them to eat as its halal.... Erm, they're veggies not Muslims, not difficult!Grin

frankie4 · 17/09/2013 19:01

You would not get a non-faith state school canteen using kosher meat as it is too expensive. I have never heard of this happening. However, they may make the decision to not serve pork products.

burberryqueen · 17/09/2013 19:01

oh and for those saying ooh i would never eat halal - you probably already have in your Indian takeout.
if you don't like animals being killed for meat, be a vegetarian.

TaperJeanGirl · 17/09/2013 19:02

Would LOVE my kids to go to a vegetarian schoolGrin

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/09/2013 19:02

It's been veggie since it was set up in the early 1900s, Reggie. Hmm Not a new-fangled fad.

frankie4 · 17/09/2013 19:02

And those of you who criticise the way halal meat is slaughtered. Do you really know what happens in the slaughter houses of the meat you eat, and are the animals treated any better? I doubt it.
