WIBU to swap the trousers

in light on another thread I was wondering if this was considered stealing ....

ds needed tracksuit bottoms and I found them in Tesco (F&F range). there were two together for something like 9 quid. One navy one and a gaudy green one. So I took two navy ones and put them on the hanger and left the gaudy green one.

I went through a normal check out not the self service one and it wasn't copped. Was that stealing?

Yes it was stealing IMO.

It was £9 for a pair of green trousers and a pair of navy trousers, not two pairs of navy trousers. If you wanted 2 pairs of navy trousers you should have gone elsewhere.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/09/2013 10:31

Yes it was.

pictish · 01/09/2013 10:31

I consider that grand. I'd do it. I hate those 2 or 3 packs if stuff because there's always a colour I don't want.

Call the police! Throw away the key!!

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:32

ok just wondered seeing as I did pay for them both was it considered stealing.

another time I was shopping for hospital and had ds in buggy. I had the handles of the buggy piled with clothes and threw slippers underneath. paid for everything walked ages back through shopping centre paid for car park found car loaded in ds went to fold up buggy and wondered why it wouldn't. the feckin slippers. but thought feck that by the time I get ds back out and up to pay for them and then my time to leave the car park would have expired it wouldn't be worth the five quid. so I didn't go back. that I admit is technically stealing.

I've read the other thread. Swapping a belt on a dress making one unusable us definitely stealing.

This isn't as black and white imho. Because Tesco could still sell the green trousers for the same amount of money. And someone might prefer 2 green ones. Whereas in the first example one dress is now unusable.

Technically stealing though.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:35

pictish it must be quiet common because I have often went to buy something and told its part of a set and when I cant see the rest of it am told someone must have taken it/swapped it.

I wanted tracksuit bottoms for myself one day. found them. no tag. went to cashier. had to call manager. they said it was part of a set (hoody with it) but it wasn't there. said they couldn't sell it. I said " that's a bit mad seeing as I am willing to buy this on its own now". he everntually just keyed in a fiver and sold it to me. I was delighted.

OP posts:
pictish · 01/09/2013 10:35

In that cade I'd go back and pay. If nothing else I'd be worried I'd be on CCTV in the shop, putting the slippers in the bottom and walking out without paying.

I hung a pair of snowboots on the back of my buggy once, and forgot about them until I locked them on my way home. I went back the next day and paid for them.

littlemisswise · 01/09/2013 10:36

If there's a colour I don't want in a pack of two or three, I don't buy it. It wouldn't occur to me to start swapping all the colours about.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:36

I don't think I'd have gone to the lengths of the other OP and gone back but I read it that she replaced the belt with the one she had. not sure I see it as stealing.

OP posts:
Lweji · 01/09/2013 10:37

My guess is that they had it as a set because they knew the green wouldn't sell as well.
And that's why it was cheaper.

So, it was not honest of you to do that.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:38

pictish I did feel bad about that one. but it wasn't a local shop. I know I have loads of excuses but I wouldn't do that again. Have often walked off with clothes on buggy then copped it and went back. did it yesterday with bras! and I definitely don't swap the contents of packs, but I do open them much to the annoyance I'm sure of Tesco staff (pjs, underwear etc).

OP posts:
spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:39

Lweji it wasn't cheaper.

OP posts:
pictish · 01/09/2013 10:39

littlrmisswise same here. I just don't buy them.

However, if my friend told me she'd done what the OP did, I wouldn't be anything close to horrified, and if anything, would think it was quite a good idea.
Can't get worked up over it anyway.

TheRealJules · 01/09/2013 10:43

I hate track suit bottoms on adults and children but if I had to buy some, I'd do what you did. No biggie.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:43

bar the slippers incident I don't see the two navy tracksuits as stealing. dishonest yes. but I spend a lot of money in Tesco clothes over the years. Had a barney with them a month ago over sandals that wouldn't fit. I had removed the tag and put them on. was raging. brought them back an hour later and they said they couldn't swap them as I removed the tag. I stood my ground and say that's ridiculous as I often see things with handwritten tags etc on their racks. they eventually let me swap them.

OP posts:
Eilidhbelle · 01/09/2013 10:43

YABU, it's stealing. I hate it when people do stuff like this. Is there nowhere else you could have bought blue trousers?

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:44

well they are ideal for a 3 year old in crèche and they were straight leg ones and as I personally cant STAND the bunched in ones at the ankle. hence when I finally found some I did that.

OP posts:
spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:45

Eili like I said its hard to find the type I want as they are not that common. Straight leg casual trousers/tracksuit bottoms. I am not excusing it I KNOW its dishonest but I don't consider it stealing as I paid for them. Anyways I hadn't done it before that or since.

Jinty64 · 01/09/2013 10:46

My ds's have long bodies and short legs so need a smaller size on the bottom than the top. I have often been tempted to swap the clothes round to get a set that fits but I never have. I just have to buy seperates.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:47

Jinty ds is exactly the same.

OP posts:
NormaReedus · 01/09/2013 10:48

I'd do it. Meh.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:49

oh there is an interesting one ... I have definitely done this as Jinty posts remind me. For example his school tracksuit quite expensive. I swapped the top for a bigger one and put it on the hanger. both items were tagged so not sure if I wasn't allow do it. Swapped a 4-5 for 5-6 jumper and kept the 4-5 bottoms. Is that stealing?

OP posts:
Lweji · 01/09/2013 10:50

What wasn't cheaper?

Individual blue and green bottoms were all 4.5 pounds?

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 10:52

"My guess is that they had it as a set because they knew the green wouldn't sell as well.
And that's why it was cheaper. "

I am saying it wasnt cheaper. They were a set at 9 quid. weren't individually priced.

OP posts:
Lweji · 01/09/2013 10:52

Swapped a 4-5 for 5-6 jumper and kept the 4-5 bottoms. Is that stealing?

Yes, because the reverse combination might not be sellable.

It's not so difficult to shorten trousers.
