WIBU to swap the trousers

in light on another thread I was wondering if this was considered stealing ....

ds needed tracksuit bottoms and I found them in Tesco (F&F range). there were two together for something like 9 quid. One navy one and a gaudy green one. So I took two navy ones and put them on the hanger and left the gaudy green one.

I went through a normal check out not the self service one and it wasn't copped. Was that stealing?

So that makes it ok? Plenty shoplift too, does that make it ok?

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:06

no sainsburys where I live. I am in Ireland.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:07

I don't shop lift.

If I went to buy something and someone else had smeared makeup on it/torn it, I probably wouldn't buy it. Nothing wrong with that.

The person that smeared makeup on it/tore it and then just left it though? That's damaging an item and should either be cleaned or paid for. That's dishonest.

Eilidhbelle · 01/09/2013 11:08

You do seem to do this a lot though, and spending lots of money in tesco is not a justification for it. Nobody is making you spend money in there.

MrsCosmopilite · 01/09/2013 11:08

If it is any help, OP, I make my ££ stretch by buying from charity shops, NCT sales (they cater for children up to about 11), and using freecycle/local sales on Facebook.

I usually buy a slightly bigger size if I have to shop in 'proper' shops, to allow for growth.

With regard to school clothes, sometimes the schools themselves (or parents) have swaps or second hand things like blazers/badges, so that might be worth checking out?

MurderOfGoths · 01/09/2013 11:08

It's really simple.

If you change/damage an item (and yes, that includes swapping a set around) then you are the one being dishonest.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:09

that to me makes the item unsellable. but having things a different size someone will always be able to buy them, someone. or even get them at a reduced price. anyways I asked was IBU and I accept that I am.

It's theft.

It may feel slightly less serious to you when you say 'dishonest' rather than 'stealing' (I assume that's why you keep using dishonest?) but it's still theft.

Also, how do you see people trying on tops and ripping them, then putting them back?

Are you in the changing room with them, or something?

Confused
MurderOfGoths · 01/09/2013 11:11

Actually if it's a set that then isn't what it should be (because some cheeky fucker thinks it's ok) then they can only sell it at a discount, and therefore you are depriving them of a sale.

Say you were selling your car and someone came round and damaged it so you had to sell it cheaper would that be ok?

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:13

Shelly I see them on the hanger. I am not in the changing room with them! Yes I guess I keep saying dishonest as I don't like the word stealing but I am starting to see that just because I hand over money it doesn't mean its not stealing. Blush

I wont find his crested school tracksuit in a charity shop or on ebay.

Have you actually looked?

If it is that expensive, it's possible people have put it for sale when sizes get smaller.

The problem is not only your track record (ok, it's only a few things, apparently), but that you have stated you'll continue doing the same. Hmm

BTW, I have once bought a cooktop with a broken ceramic piece because we had broken it in the shop. I couldn't bring myself to not buy it because we were responsible for it and had already decided to buy it.
And have been known to argue with shopkeepers who gave me more change than it was due. Once, when I was being returned money and they were giving me about 100 pounds more than they should.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:13

Murder I agree I see your point about the car.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 01/09/2013 11:14

Very dishonest imo.
I wouldnt dream of swapping items over.
I work in a huge supermarket and after 22 years of service Im still shocked over some of the things customers do.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:15

Honestly, I see what you guys are saying now. And am embarrassed now.

OP posts:
Lweji · 01/09/2013 11:16

Just go and don't do it again, then. :)

MurderOfGoths · 01/09/2013 11:18

I remember being younger and looking for a work suit, I saw this beautiful suit, exactly my style and in my price range. Only one of the hook. The size label said size 10. I was ecstatic, until I looked at the trousers and saw they were a size 14. Never could have made that work.

So I couldn't buy it, and I doubt many other people could either, and so the shop couldn't sell it.

spongebob13 · 01/09/2013 11:18

I wont. I guess I think of the likes of Tesco as a big store, loads of overheads to cover this kinda theft and justified it by still paying for the items. You have all given good examples and scenarios and I am embarrassed now as I genuinely do see myself as a pretty honest and nice person. But ye guys have made me think and I wont be doing it again. I'm sorry.
