Inspired by the HW thread, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Arthur works for the MoM so wont be on a pittance as a head of department, even a minor one as there would surely be grades?

They eat massive amounts of expensive food having three courses at every dinner, cooked breakfast every day. When they win a load of money, instead of saving it in the knowledge that they have 4 kids still at school they blow the lot on a holiday of a month in Egypt! At the beginning of CoS Mrs W takes some silver sickles and ONE gold galleon from their vault, and then happily blows 1000 galleons on a holiday rather than see them financially secure for the next few years.

Seems to me that the reason their kids are in second hand robes and reading second hand books is because they are shit with money, not that they dont have enough.

Books.....They have to have a new Miranda Goshawk book each year, so when F&G have finished with them they could have passed one to Ron who passed it to Ginny and the older ones shared the remainder if they needed it, which is unlikely. Why have several unused copies of the same book in the family and still buy another one for the youngest student? Same with robes. Rons dress robes are second hand, but Mrs W says that Arthur has some for parties so why not lend him those (with some magically performed alternations if needed) rather than pod out for horrible second hand ones? Actually, thinking further, Mrs W is supposed to be a whizz at household stuff so why doesnt she transfigure the second hand stuff to look better?

They just throw good money after bad!

The wedding was paid for by Fleur's parents, though, wasn't it? Parents of the bride and all that? And I reckon Bill gets a good wage as a curse-breaker for Gringotts.

Whoever suggested that the house is their pension was wrong. As a senior civil servant Arthur will be on a final-salary pension, averaged over the last 3 years of service, so all the overtime racked up during the wizarding war will count towards it.

Yy to bad parenting with the Weasleys never having their kids at home for the holidays.

I think the reason that Ron couldn't use any of his older brothers' books was that for some reason the editions get updated every single year so the old ones are out of date. Apart from the Half-Blood Prince's Potions book, that one is still the same edition for years and years to make the story work.

ShadeofViolet · 02/09/2013 12:21

I am Molly. Its about right!

DashingRedhead · 02/09/2013 12:45

Too many Mollys! Me too.

BTW, I don't think the Weasleys do have a big house. Apparently it looks like a stone pigsty with extra bits held up by magic and when they're all at home and have Harry and Hermione staying, there isn't room for them to all sit at table indoors.

Pachacuti · 02/09/2013 13:20

I am Lupin. And quite pleased to be lumped in with the other Lupins here.

DeTamble · 02/09/2013 13:30

I'm certainly missing it!

ChubbyKitty · 02/09/2013 13:45

Oh my word I'm Fred and George!

AverageHeight · 02/09/2013 13:47

Another Lupin!

While I like the character and do think I'm well matched, all the talk of polar opposites (bellatrix lestrange) has me thinking that Remus and Bellatrix are the flipsides of the manic depressive coin...

Back to the original point, I don't see why Molly should have had to get a job to prove her own value to other random ppl. I'm sure she had plenty of biring stuff to do with household spells (protective charms etc like hermione when on the run) and just keeping tabs on the whole family and would have wholeheartly enjoyed whatever free time she had (much homemade cake I reckon!)

Bogeyface · 02/09/2013 13:51

She didnt need to get a job to prove her value, but to bring extra money in as what they have they piss up the wall!

DeTamble · 02/09/2013 14:03

Hilarious, I got Horace Slughorn. I did not see that coming!

AverageHeight · 02/09/2013 14:33

Money for what though? They're all fed, sheltered and clothed. Happy home life. If they had more money I'm sure they'd find a way to spend it pretty sharpish rather then hang on to it for a rainy day. I like their attitude of life is for living. If Ron had all brand new super fashionable clothes he'd just find something else to moan about, maybe even that Molly doesn't spend time and effort on making personal gifts for him and just buys things as a quick fix! With such a big family it'd be pretty wasteful for there to be no hand-me-downs. I had several hand knitted jumpers and cardis growing up and treasured the connection with the family member who'd made them as there was a fair bit of geographical distance (just like I assume with Hogwarts and the Burrow).

VileWoman · 02/09/2013 14:37

Another Molly, not sure I'm happy about that. Especially after this thread!

Bogeyface · 02/09/2013 14:53

Yes but having to go out and buy second hand shabby clothes and books because you pissed 1000 Galleons (worth a lot if it pays for a month in Egypt for a family of 7!) is downright stupid.

Would you really do that?

OP posts:
AnyoneButLulu · 02/09/2013 15:43

Unfashionable clothes is one thing, but doesn't Ron spend ages with a knackered wand which they can't afford to replace? That's a serious problem.

LimburgseVlaai · 02/09/2013 16:27

SNAPE

Beastofburden · 02/09/2013 16:29

limburgsetc Envy

LimburgseVlaai · 02/09/2013 16:32

Heh heh. I quite like Snape. So I'm happy with that.

MinesAPintOfTea · 02/09/2013 16:36

The month in Egypt is a bit misleading: they were visiting a family member and presumably stayed with him. Also reasonable to spend a windfall on visiting family (assuming no debt etc) if you usually can't afford to do that.

As for what Molly does all day: Harry thinks the house is held up entirely by magic. Possibly Molly spends a lot of time refreshing spells.

merrymouse · 02/09/2013 17:16

I think JK says that wizard children are home educated before secondary school? I suspect the poor woman was trying to launch herself back into the job market, and maybe set up some kind of business selling jumpers during books 2 and 3, and then at the end of book 4, just when she's starting to make some headway, Voldemort returns and she has to set up headquarters for the resistance movement.

BigW · 02/09/2013 17:26

You see Merry that's another thing that bothers me. How can the likes of Harry and hermione ever hope to be as proficient at magic stuff as someone like Ron who has been exposed to it his entire life?

He will have grown up surrounded by spells and potions and port keys where as Harry only found out a few hours before setting his eyes on a wand for the first time.

Trills · 02/09/2013 18:05

Do all wizarding families have at least one SAHP while their children are under 11 then?

merrymouse · 02/09/2013 18:16

Anyway, the Weasleys are supposed to contrast with the Dursleys and the Malfoys precisely because they aren't obsessed with getting ahead and keeping in with the right people - possibly hence Percy's frustration.

I suppose JK could go back and insert a chapter where some of these issues are clarified, but can't help thinking it might interfere with the flow.

Lottiedoubtie · 02/09/2013 18:20

Well I suppose that some wizarding families malfoys can probably afford tutors to teach their children to read and write at home.

I think it says somewhere in the book that some go to muggle primary schools as well.

(I got Molly Weasley in the quiz as well)

nooka · 02/09/2013 18:32

ha ha I gave dd the test and she came out as Gellert Grindelwald with Harry Potter as her opposite Grin Clever, conceited, and dangerous apparently!

She was not at all impressed! She wanted to be Luna. Funny quiz though :)

nooka · 02/09/2013 19:03

Oh and I'm another Molly Weasley, which is irritating because I really dislike her in the books/films and personally am some way off being 'practically a saint' (thank goodness!)
