Inspired by the HW thread, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Arthur works for the MoM so wont be on a pittance as a head of department, even a minor one as there would surely be grades?

They eat massive amounts of expensive food having three courses at every dinner, cooked breakfast every day. When they win a load of money, instead of saving it in the knowledge that they have 4 kids still at school they blow the lot on a holiday of a month in Egypt! At the beginning of CoS Mrs W takes some silver sickles and ONE gold galleon from their vault, and then happily blows 1000 galleons on a holiday rather than see them financially secure for the next few years.

Seems to me that the reason their kids are in second hand robes and reading second hand books is because they are shit with money, not that they dont have enough.

Books.....They have to have a new Miranda Goshawk book each year, so when F&G have finished with them they could have passed one to Ron who passed it to Ginny and the older ones shared the remainder if they needed it, which is unlikely. Why have several unused copies of the same book in the family and still buy another one for the youngest student? Same with robes. Rons dress robes are second hand, but Mrs W says that Arthur has some for parties so why not lend him those (with some magically performed alternations if needed) rather than pod out for horrible second hand ones? Actually, thinking further, Mrs W is supposed to be a whizz at household stuff so why doesnt she transfigure the second hand stuff to look better?

They just throw good money after bad!

Harry is the last descendant of the ancient Peverell wizarding family, this emerges towards the end of the Deathly Hallows - hence his bank vault I guess.

and yes Ron is an ungrateful brat indeed. Grin maybe he didn't want his brothers cast offs and so his mum decided that because he was so ungrateful he could have someone else's cast offs instead. Grin

Ohhhh... I didn't know that about Harry.

There needs to be a prequel!

But if JK is happy to go along giving huge swathes of money away to Amnesty International then that's fine with me too...

FrussoHathor that is an interesting theory. It works, too. Which is why he ended up with the wizarding version of Fred West's Dress Robes.

I don't see why wizards can't use contraception but probably have no more control than we do over the sex of their children. IMO the Weasleys kept trying until they had a girl.

I don't think Ron is spoilt (he has clear boundaries) but he does have a happy home life which is why going on the run (fearing for his families' lives) is so hard for him.

My theory is that James Potter's parents must have been killed at the very beginning of the First Wizarding War. We know they were alive when he went to Hogwarts as they became like family to Sirius Black. But nothing after that.

Would help to explain why Lily and James were so prominent in the first Order of the Pheonix despite being so young.

IMO the Weasleys kept trying until they had a girl. that explains Ron. Ron is gender disappointment personified.

He probably feels it the most that Ginny was the one they wanted. He just gets in the way. I think he's forgotten about with books and robes. Ginny is their favourite and he can't live up to his brothers. He's a rebellion waiting to happen.

Been to tea with Jamie Oliver have we op?
For goodness sake they're not on benefits, the children are well adjusted, loyal friends, good sports and generous and try hard.
Why pick on the poor Weasleys? It's always the working classes that get it in the neck. So what if she isnt the yummiest of mummies when she turns out at the station to send the DC back to school she's prioritised a private education. She and Mr W can chiose to soend their cash how they like. Who are you to get all hoiky hoiky judgy panties if Mrs W takes her brood on a well earned break or chooses to spend all the botox fund on three square meals a day for her family? What does it matter if her house is a bit messy and her kids a bit untidy. They spend all day romping in the woods with giant spiders and whatnot - shouldnt she be commended for turning out such well rounded young people - good with money or not?

If I were you I'd be more worried about what that toff Draco Malfoy and his cronies are up to. Slitherin around like those Bullingdon Club bullies in the muggle world. He and his entire extended family swan around with this air of entitlement, state of the art brooms sticks, the most expensive wands from Ollivanders with their pretentious coiffur, starched up collars and brand new robes. Bribing and bullying the less academic pupils to be their henchmen. And just because his dad can afford house servants like that Dobbie bloke, doesn't mean to say that they got their money by legitimate means. We all know they're secretly hanging with that Voldemort guy- and he's on the most wanted list ffs. The Aunt (with a name like a high society hooker- trixie le strange) is another one ... Dont get me started but i suppose you'd want Mrs W rigged up in a basque with her falsies straining out of the bustiere too eh? I wouldn't be at surprised if it all comes out in the end that this Malfoy lot have been secretly supporting the Dark Lord.

Shame on you op - its the Malfoys lifestyle and morals you should be castigating not the wholesome Weasleys. I know who's house I'd rather go to tea at!

Molly not getting a paid job is the bit that annoyed me most. There are three whole years (Chamber of Secrets through to Goblet of Fire) when all the DCs are at boarding school (and Percy definitely old enough to keep an eye on Ginny in the holidays as well although it would inevitably end in tears if he was in charge of Ron). She needs to get a job.

Slightly off topic but:

Hogwarts is fee paying, yeah? And all witches and wizards need to go to a school of magic by law (it's been established that underaged magic outside of school is illegal).

So what happens to the people who can't afford the fees? Like Snape's family for instance, in the flashbacks to his childhood he didn't come across as being from a wealthy background. Or what about Muggle born wizards whose parents can't afford a private school whose fees are paid in solid gold coins? Is there a magic equivalent of the local comprehensive?

MortifiedAdams · 01/09/2013 11:05

I dont think.it is fee paying. The costs (and what the school fund is for) are books and uniform.

Report
thebody · 01/09/2013 11:16

I don't think it's fee paying either.

do we think Draco married Pansy Parkinson's. can't recognise the woman he was with on the platform at the end of the last film.

I love Molly Wesley, god some posters will be on soon saying Arthur should have an affair as she wears flat shoes and is a SAHM like the EmmaThompson thread.

Draco Married Astoria Greengrass, two years younger, Slytherin Pure Blood. Her sister Daphne was in the same year and house as Draco. Their son is called Scorpius.

No way would Arthur have an affair.

a) He is a very nice man who loves his wife.
b) She killed Bellatrix at the end, I wouldn't mess with Molly Weasley.

But what would she get a job as?

She's had a massive career break, which won't really help with her employability, she's not going to want to work in the ministry with her husband or at Hogwarts with the children there, there's no real industries in the wizarding world, shops, banks and what have you all seem to be family businesses without any real vacancies and the domestic stuff that she's good at would be mostly covered by house elves...

At the beginning of PoA Ron writes to Harry and says that most of the winnings had gone on the holiday but he had been promised a new wand.

Very bad planning imo.

And YY to Molly getting a job.

And another thing......why do M&A allow the kids to stay at Hogwarts every holiday? I would have my kids home at every opportunity but they seem quite happy to wave them off in September and not see them again until July! They also go on holiday to see Bill (or Charlie, cant remember which) during the Xmas holidays and leave the kids at school!

Lazy, entitled and bad parents all round imo Wink :o
