In what sense is it OK for Tesco to use this message to sell this?

A hand-counter is a perfectly fine thing for Tesco to sell.

But calling it a Totty Clicker? Really, Tesco? Really? I know you're just a marketplace for someone else here, but still....

If you have a strong stomach, here is the copy:
"Totty Clicker The Totty Clicker was made famous by a Mr. Ben Affleck in a Lynx television advertisement. Tally counters were usually carried around by large burley bouncers for counting people entering clubs and bars, but thanks to the Hollywood star there has been a keen following of the Totty Clicker ever since. The Totty Clicker is the latest 'mancessory' used by young gentlemen whilst wetting their whistle at the local public house or 'Disco.' These Cad's click their Totty Clicker tally counters when smiled upon by a good looking filly, thus creating a competitive sport in which to embark upon on an evening. Chap's all over England are exercising their right to judge whether they think they are 'Wed worthy or not' at the click of a button. Competitive sports have always been popular with the young men of this country and Totty Clicker's have just added one more to the books. The Totty Clicker comes in a chrome finish (this can also be used as a reflective instrument to comb ones..."

AIBU to point out that it's still on the website in full illiterate glory?

DuelingFanjo · 30/08/2013 21:19

I had a call on my mobile apologising and telling me they are taking it off the website. I didn't answer it because it was an unknown number but they left a really long message!

Tee2072 · 30/08/2013 22:05

It's still there. I've just tweeted again.

BonaDrag · 30/08/2013 22:41

Are commas not allowed in Cambridge graduate programmes?

Pozzled · 30/08/2013 22:55

Strange, as far as I can see it's not on the website. I looked at about 6.30 today and then just now and couldn't find it.

Pozzled · 30/08/2013 23:00

Just checked again- the link in the OP still seems to work, but when you search on Tesco Direct for the key words (e.g totty, clicker, tally, counter) it doesn't come up. So I don't know what that means- any ideas? They definitely said on Twitter that they were taking it down.

cumfy · 31/08/2013 00:54

Isn't there an app ?

CocktailQueen · 31/08/2013 01:13

Argh. Speaking as an editor, that piece is riddled with mistakes and is generally crap
Aimed at people aged 3-4 though, did you notice that? Toot. Grin

SomethingOnce · 31/08/2013 01:25

I'll now shop at Tesco fewer times per year than I already do.

[wonders how to shop a negative number of times]

ColdfeetPinksocks · 31/08/2013 01:28

I almost don't believe this, yet my jaw is left hanging...

Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 06:42

Pozz they tweeted me again saying they didn't know why it was still up but that it couldn't be searched for.

I am suspicious that they are going to leave it up and rewrite it...

whoop · 31/08/2013 07:53

It also still comes up If you google tesco totty clicker.... Looks like tesco can't write product descriptions or remove things properly from their website!

magpieC · 31/08/2013 08:18

Looks like the description may not have originated at Tesco - some of you may want to be in touch with Amazon too...

HomeHelpMeGawd · 31/08/2013 08:32

Seensomuch, now would be the right time for you hop off on to a thread you find less boring and pointless. There are other verbs I'd use pace hop, but I woudn't want to violate Mumsnet's rules.

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 08:44

Your links don't show me a description, Magpie...

theodorakisses · 31/08/2013 08:47

Another message of support here. Is this 2013?

Crowler · 31/08/2013 08:50

Shocking.

TarkaTheOtter · 31/08/2013 08:52

I was under the impression that you either become a PhD or you don't. Didn't know you could also get a distinction. How very impressive arnie.

So, did anyone get a reason for why it's being deleted.

magpieC · 31/08/2013 08:52

Oh sorry - am on my phone. Does this work?

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008JEQ1PW?ie=UTF8&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

magpieC · 31/08/2013 08:56

Or failing that Google 'totty clicker ben affleck amazon' and for me it's the top two hits

Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 09:05

That got it Magpie, thanks. Have Tweeted again.

Thumbwitch · 31/08/2013 09:15

Is it coming up from the link for anyone who hadn't clicked on it before they said it was taken down? I'm assuming it's still cached on my computer, which is why I'm still getting it. Certainly can't get it by searching for it, either by name or by product number.

TarkaTheOtter · 31/08/2013 09:18

Yes still comes up from the link even though not looked at page before.

Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 09:19

They have removed it from their search engine, Thumb, but not from the site and you can't actually order it.

I've had a bit of a Hmm moment with them when they told me 'we're working really hard to remove this'. Um. Delete the page from your servers?!?! Takes about 2 seconds.

Thumbwitch · 31/08/2013 10:17

Grin - they don't know what/who they're up against, eh Tee!
