SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:33

I don't mind Excel, but I took one look at Access and ran straight back to Filemaker Pro. Grin

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:34

Aargb sotry for typos need to rant while it deciees whether its going to save this time or "run out of respoutces" again

Are uou my old boss? He was filemakers biggest (only?) Fan

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:38

Oh im sick of tbis. I want to go to bed but I wanted this finished today or ot will drag on even longer

ImperialBlether · 27/08/2013 22:39

Oh I love Excel! Tell us what you were stuck on.

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:40

Im not stuck as such. Just the processor struggling and so it keeps running out of resources every damn time.
And usually I love it too! Not so keen on access, inefficient imo

OP posts:
SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:41

I have spent more time reopening it and waiting while it takes minutes to recalculate every tine I save (and failing to save) than I have actually doi g the work

OP posts:
ElephantsEye · 27/08/2013 22:42

Do you hate spelling too, or have all your keys changed places tonight just to wind you up? Smile

I am an ex-Excel-hater. I learned to love it. Lots of us on here love Excel and would love to be able to help you if you'll let us.

MrsBW · 27/08/2013 22:42

You need a bigger/better PC and if the spreadsheet is really that big, you need to do something other than a spreadsheet.

HTH - I feel your pain.

IrisWildthyme · 27/08/2013 22:43

I love excel and access! They are my only true friends... Wink
Sounds like you may need to upgrade your PC. What spec machine are you using? how many records in your db?

ElephantsEye · 27/08/2013 22:43

Is it a particularly large file? Or is your computer doing updates or something which is slowing it down? Dead frustrating though.

MuddlingMackem · 27/08/2013 22:44

No, not your old boss, I've never been anyone's boss.

But I was introduced to and taught it by a fan when I first had to use it and it'll take a lot to make me change allegiance, it's so easy to use. :)

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:44

Yep I know. But you have to sign lots of forms In blood to access the sql server. And the spelli g is down to fat fingers and a general lack of abilktt in typing! :o

OP posts:
Beastofburden · 27/08/2013 22:46

You're sure it's the machine and not the version of excel? Some f them have memory limits.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/08/2013 22:46

I had the hang of Excel, once, many versions ago. Then they kept changing it and now I can't do it any more.

Access has been designed by an almost infinite number of monkeys.

MrsBW · 27/08/2013 22:47

Use SQL Express... just install it on your laptop. No need for SQL servers...

Just be aware it won't be backed up...

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:47

Filemaker easy to use
it is a large file, or it would be if it ever let me I.port all the records.
Everyone help me push these last few in

OP posts:
SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:48

I dont have admin righrs to install sql express, thanks though.
I have tried to do this in a variery of ways and its really getting me down. Spent one day last week on it (other problems then) and now all day todag :(

OP posts:
MrsBW · 27/08/2013 22:51

Boo! (Not being able to install SQL Express...)

Hope you get it sorted soon... nothing more frustrating.

ouryve · 27/08/2013 22:52

It sounds like your computer isn't up to the (overbloated) job.

ImperialBlether · 27/08/2013 22:53

Is this a company machine then? If so, tell them that's the last document you create on it. Either they should get you one that can cope or not expect you to work at night.

FWIW I think you should give up for tonight and do it tomorrow, if you can.

SPBisResisting · 27/08/2013 22:55

It is. Its complicatex in that I do have another machine. Also tried someone elses desktop and not really much better. Just crap and needs doing :(

HillStreetLoos · 27/08/2013 22:58

Excel great when it is not sulking as it is for you now - I hate the not enough resources message. Like a teenager is always sulks when you just want to go to bed or when you have a really important deadline to meet.
But like a teenager, when it is behaving and does exactly what you want it to do don't you just love it. Grin

I haven't heard of SQL Express but will go and search it out now as I regularly play with spread sheets with > 200,000 rows
