Aibu - crap staff using mental health excuses

Joiningthegang · 22/08/2013 20:30

Aibu to think that whilst there are many many people with genuine mental health issues, I am sooo pissed off that when crap member of staff is "found out" they play the mental Health stress card, get signed off sick and you can't really do anything about it.

I am mostly pissed off because they ruin it for the genuinely ill people.

x2boys your comments worry me
You are a mh nurse but claim in depth expert knowledge of something that even specialist psychiatrists struggle to diagnose correctly.

an aside to the main action

McNewPants2013 · 22/08/2013 22:12

I think MH are seeing what seems like more new cases, but that is because slowly the stigma is wearing off and with Internet access it is easier to tell people about MH issues.

I do believe more people are more sympathetic and understand a bit more about MH.

Garcia10 · 22/08/2013 22:12

I've read but not all of the thread but from experience I have to agree with the OP.

There are circumstances where people feel under pressure and go to their GP to get signed off with MH issues which may not be genuine. I have done it myself - I was having hard time when transitioning between positions and went to my GP and basically exaggerated my symptoms knowing that I would be signed off. You would be very naive to think that people don't do this and for longer than the 10 days then I got.

As MH issues are not visible it is relatively easy to do and people do take advantage of this.

This means that it can be very difficult for those with real MH problems to get the empathy they deserve.

I know of a school which is in special measures and has the council in trying to improve it. Almost a third of teachers are now off with stress. I cannot believe that all cases are genuine.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:13

^ I appear to need to go to bed.

Or at least my posts are suggesting so.

Have fun being wrong Biscuit

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 22:13

Well I've said my bit and I have a load of virtual people ''hate'' me because I'm not happy about my working environment with one person who makes things very uneasy for others and I doubt any of you would be happy in my working environment. Or want to be in it. But you feel like you have to stick up for my colleague because you empathise with them. Which is great. You've said your peace and I've said mine my opinion isn't changed and i'm off to bed.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:14

I am allowed to be wrong though...you know, MH issues and all that. So no laying into my awful posting ability having a bad day

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 22:15

I worked with someone who was so sick during her pregnancy she would literally be throwing up into her bin - not pleasant but we all figured she was suffering far worse than we were.

Caff2 · 22/08/2013 22:15

I didn't say my peace. I said my piece, because your op didn't really induce peaceful feelings.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:16

Mine is a boring book tittle. I should change it to lazyarsssssse or something

SunshineBossaNova · 22/08/2013 22:16

TylerHopkins · 22/08/2013 22:18

Almost a third of teachers are now off with stress. I cannot believe that all cases are genuine

A close friend of mine works in OH for Education and the amount of teachers signed off is unbelievable. The pressures they are under are immense and many are signed off due to bullying.

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 22:19

50shades Oh God yes, 'what have you got to be depressed about' - that sounds familiar!

passmetheprozac · 22/08/2013 22:20

Dear fucking lord, do you want the scars on my wrists from where I was was so low I tried to kill myself. Do you want the feeling of despair, of hopelessness the feeling that you have to hurt yourself to feel something else other than empty? The feeling that you have to hurt yourself because the internal pain is so bad a physical release is better?

Sometimes you can't just get on with it. Sometimes depression can be so crippling that functioning isn't an option and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Spikeytree · 22/08/2013 22:20

If they are in Special Measures, I can't believe it is only a third off.

MadameDefarge · 22/08/2013 22:20

OP. please stop irking me with your misuse and mispelling of the word irk.

Oh, and your goady post.

God people here are highly strung and yes I do apologise for using the wrong piece it's late I'm tired and to be fair I wasn't ever particularly brilliant at English Lang.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:23

highly strung - No shit, surely

nenevomito · 22/08/2013 22:24

I have bipolar - I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist after a stay in hospital, that good enough for ya?

I went back to work when my sick pay stopped, despite the fact that I couldn't string a sentence together as my speech was still fucked as I needed to pay the mortgage. Wasn't great.

I went out when I was ill. It helped with my recovery. Get over it.

It's been a looooong fucking time since I've ready such a nasty whiny load of discriminatory uneducated shit on a thread since they started sorting out the SEN threads.

Oh and its IRK not ERK. Erk is what you say when you step on a slug with no shoes on. IRK, IRK, IRK, learn it, then learn about mental health properly.

LazyMonkeyButler · 22/08/2013 22:24

OP, are you my Manager or Team Leader? If not, you should meet up - I'm sure you'd get along like a house on fire!

WillyandTig · 22/08/2013 22:24

Highly strung? no wonder your colleague needs to be signed off. Imagine putting up with that shitty attitude at work. What a dick.

Caff2 · 22/08/2013 22:25

Quite, orchard keeper, "highly strung" is quite telling really isn't it?

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:26

That has to be a joke surely? If it's taken you that long to realize then I think you've gone wrong somewhere. Jesus wept

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 22:28

Leverette I'm really a very nice person in RL i'm very honest but very wary not to be hurtful to people. I am very good to my colleague and not one of their triggers. It's hard to explain but I'm a very likeable person but that's because I try hard to be considerate that's why i'm covering shifts etc. because I genuinely care about my employers and others I work with and I just put up with the fall out. I just vent on forums, well actually this is the first time I have not that much of an issue and I didn't start the thread. I wouldn't vent to them as that would not be helpful to them in any shape or form.
