Aibu - crap staff using mental health excuses

Joiningthegang · 22/08/2013 20:30

Aibu to think that whilst there are many many people with genuine mental health issues, I am sooo pissed off that when crap member of staff is "found out" they play the mental Health stress card, get signed off sick and you can't really do anything about it.

I am mostly pissed off because they ruin it for the genuinely ill people.

InsultingBadger · 22/08/2013 22:01

I must have looked like a terrible person - always late, missed bits in my job, was a yes person taking on too much. When I was pulled up on it I literally crumbled and was signed off. I was actually suffering from anxiety issues, hence being late as it took me 3 hours to leave the house in the morning. I didn't want to disappoint as was worried about losing my job, people thinking I couldn't cope etc.

I looked ok on the surface and still do even though I still have issues

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 22:02

jap- um ok.... classy much?

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:03

you're insulting a thread full of people with/who've been affected by MH issues. Pot, kettle, black Hmm

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 22:04

littlecloud for the love of god, stop making such enormous generalistations that someone with any other ailment would not make a working place so difficult. Would you? Could you? Please? Just stop and think for a minute.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:04

In other news I'm addicted to The men who made us thin. It's horrific and interesting at the same time. Almost makes me reconsider my Diet Coke addiction...Almost. Anyone else? Grin

idiuntno57 · 22/08/2013 22:04

x2boys are you saying we are making our illness up??

much like the OP really
In my experience so called medical professionals can be the worst in this area.

What was it you said you did OP?

MollyHooper · 22/08/2013 22:04

It is rare yes, but it happens. People don't just suddenly become bi-polar after a certain age, it's not like getting pubes. Confused

It's also rare to have to leave school at 14 years old because of mental illness but that happened to me too.

I have never though I was God or had special powers though, maybe I should ask for a second opinion?

Your attitude frightens me.

x2boys · 22/08/2013 22:04

I did not say it is with sufferers I have nursed many real sufferes but it is a popular term people with know idea what they are talking about like to bandy around

Caff2 · 22/08/2013 22:04

But, my goodness, this thread is incredibly upsetting if people who are health care "professionals" have this attitude. I assume they're lying through their teeth at work and paying lip service to helping people whilst silently mocking/disbelieving.

MollyHooper · 22/08/2013 22:04

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 22:05

littlecloud I save classy for those that deserve it. You are not on that list currently. You have peaked my nark as you sound like so many people close to me. It is just in a way refreshing to hear it said outloud so in the same vein, I feel able to return the favour. So up yours really

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 22:06

Insulting a whole load of people because i'm saying one particular person who none of you have met makes mine and a lot of my colleagues working life very hard due to their illness (yes theirs not any of yours so don't take it personally) I have not insulted anyone directly here I have been the only person who has actually been insulted.

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 22:07

Jap- you sound just lovely name calling is very becoming.

Spikeytree · 22/08/2013 22:07

Not so silently a lot of the time, Caff2.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:07

I have heard the odd idiot self refer as bi-polar (and pulled a Hmm face at them before asking if they've actually been diagnosed) that's when they say they're just very up and down people

That is annoying and I sort of get what you mean, you just worded it god-awfully...

x2boys · 22/08/2013 22:07

know of course they don't just become bipolar after a certain age or develop schizophrenia either but it is very rare to be diagnosed in the early teens thats all

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 22:08

x2boys bi-polar is a range isn't it though? And bi-polar certainly isn't just what you have witnessed isn't it though? So, haven't you got a bit more of actual helpfulness to bring to this rather than you half hidden dislike for those you deem as not unwell enough.
I know your type. I have been treated by them. so there are two sides to the experience of mental health

Caff2 · 22/08/2013 22:09

On the light hearted side, my brother's response to crap attitudes to his mental health problems was to send this to the "friend" who told him to get a grip:

How happy is the ignorant
He does not give a damn
I wish I were so ignorant
My god, perhaps I am!

:)

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 22:09

Jap - very succinctly put! Grin
OP - I have a MH condition, for which I will have to take meds for the rest of my life. I work hard, am good at what I do, and my condition is hidden most of the time (just as well, considering the opinion of people like you). However,I have really bad times too - I would NEVER consider myself to be a weak person

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:09

jap - is the end of your name meant to read as bum splatt? If so, Grin

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 22:10

littlecloud still stands. you are one. if you insult one of those who are unwell and in possibly a similar situation as me, then I will defend their experience. specially from people who claim to know all about depression.

50shadesofmeh · 22/08/2013 22:11

You aren't my boss are you ? Who said I had nothing to be depressed about so therefore my PND didn't exist.

MikeOxard · 22/08/2013 22:11

Well, I was going to give you a right flaming, but I see you already have one. How about a Biscuit ?

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 22:11

are named called little cloud after the cloud that follows sad people around in cartoons? If so, it's fairly accurate, as you're making quite a comic arse of yourself... Wine

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 22:12

TOK it is. don't you love it. IBS inspired.
