Aibu - crap staff using mental health excuses

Joiningthegang · 22/08/2013 20:30

Aibu to think that whilst there are many many people with genuine mental health issues, I am sooo pissed off that when crap member of staff is "found out" they play the mental Health stress card, get signed off sick and you can't really do anything about it.

I am mostly pissed off because they ruin it for the genuinely ill people.

Have we been invaded by fuckwits

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 21:21

When i was signed off work with depression and was aelf harming my doctor advised me to go out and so things rather than sitting around - so another Biscuit from me

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2013 21:23

I can't believe that I've just read a post by a (supposed) mental health nurse that states:

bi-polar is very popular now

I'm actually gobsmacked. Shock

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2013 21:25

And yes, people with depression or stress can't just sit in the house all day becoming isolated and even more anxious!

Jeez.

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 21:26

No MollyHooper it's not. What i'm saying Is I personally only don't work unless I physically can't and am borderline that at the moment and mentally wobbly due to tiredness. When your physically well enough to do all these jolly fun things and effectively having a holiday it doesn't register with me as being signed off sick. And erks me as everyone else is left to pick up the pieces.

MollyHooper · 22/08/2013 21:26

Makes it all better idiuntno. :o

It seems you should have stayed at home and posted about your feelings President least you destroy one of your colleagues souls.

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 21:26

Yes I imagine people wake up all the time and think 'I want to be trendy so I think I will have bi-polar, it's very popular these days....... REALLY???? Hmm

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 21:27

Not saying they should stay in all day for goodness sake jeez.

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2013 21:31

So they can go out then?

Just not post it on FaceBook?

MollyHooper · 22/08/2013 21:31

OK littlecloud...

One of the problems with being mentally ill is that your moods are are unpredictable. It is impossible to be consistently well enough to do your job properly.

Would you rather someone constantly call in sick at the last moment? Wouldn't that be harder for the company?

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 21:32

Apparently if you have depression it gives you a free pass, to be flakey, rude to your colleagues, create awkward and uneasy working environment because of said behaviour, storm off, and then get signed off with no reprimand. I get that they are ill. But If I were to act in the way that my colleague does I would have been sacked long ago.

idiuntno57 · 22/08/2013 21:32

i am actually quite excited at the thought of being cool after 42 years in the wilderness. If i'd known this was what was to come when diagnosed with bipolar disorder 22 years ago I might have been less depressed...

FFS the whole point about these sort of issues is that you can't tell by looking at someone. I've been off work with pretty severe mania before now but from a snapshot view all might have appeared well. If I could distribute a tin of biscuits from my phone I would.

WillyandTig · 22/08/2013 21:34

They might act that way as a result of the illness, you turnip!

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 21:34

May i add, some mental health nurses that I have encountered have .....been...a little light on the empathy side. say no more. I won't mention nurse ratchett.

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 21:34

And we took my work colleague who had bad PND out for a meal when she was off (I was covering her work as well as my own) but now I find out that I should have just been bitching about her on the Internet - oh well, silly me for being sympathetic.....

If you knew for certain they were faking then YANBU, but you can't be.
I know a work colleague that pulled that excuse then went to fricking Greece because she had used up all her holidays Angry and its actually dickheads like that make real mental health issues dubious.

My 'D'M was crippled with depression all through my childhood and tried to commit suiside around every 18 months.she painted her face like a Chinese mask once. It scared the shit out of me.

OTOH my friend is regularly 'depressed' eg split up with ex, no money for holiday....when in fact it's just feeling down or fucked off.

Op your going to get a virtual beating on here but I sort of get where your coming from.

TheOrchardKeeper · 22/08/2013 21:35

P.S I'm having a bad day. Can you tell? Grin

littlecloud · 22/08/2013 21:37

MollyHopper our job is their trigger lots of little things about it wind them up it is not a healthy environment for them to work in any outsider can see that. But they refuse to see this and continue to work often unpredictably which can often make things very hard for us when they are there and even harder when they aren't as we are a person down. Are you saying you would be happy and enjoy going to work with someone like that when you knew that anything could set them off in your working environment?

Salmoutra yes of course that's exactly what I meant.

PresidentServalan · 22/08/2013 21:38

TheOrchardKeeper Is that because you have now used up all of your Biscuit Grin

And I would just like to say OP that I wish I didn't behave like that sometimes at work but however bad it is for you on the outside of it, you have NO fucking idea what it's like

TylerHopkins · 22/08/2013 21:39

I think the OP works at my office. Just had someone do this and yes, found out it was an excuse via FB. Silly idiot.

I do believe it happens, a lot. It's just impossible to figure out the piss takers amongst the genuine cases.

acer12 · 22/08/2013 21:39

Littlecloud just read your last post ... That has got to beta wind up right Grin

japonicabumsplatt · 22/08/2013 21:39

OP, is the crap staff the person with the mental health problem? That's nice isn't it?! So they are crap because they are unwell or just crap...pleaswe clarify

usualsuspect · 22/08/2013 21:40
littlecloud · 22/08/2013 21:42

I'm not bashing people with mental illness so put your biscuits away I'm just pointing out how the illness can have such a crappy effect on others who effectively just have to DEAL with it. I get people are mentally Ill, yes it's shit for them. Lots of illnesses are crappy physical or mental.
