to never wear heels so I'm not freak-lady at work

I'm fairly tall, not huge, standing at 5 foot 9. I've always been the short one in my family (my mum is 6 foot) and I never thought much of it.

But now I've become increasingly aware of being tall and feel unable to wear heels - particularly at work - because they make me considerably taller than everyone else. Including the men which makes me feel silly.

AIBU the veto heels completely?

I am so Envy

I would love to be as tall as you and I'd still wear four inch heels too!

ExitPursuedByABear · 17/08/2013 22:19

Go girl. Wear your height with pride.

MrsHarryRamsden · 17/08/2013 22:20

I too am 5 ft 9 and i feel like a giant in heels, esp as most of my friends are quite small

TheGirlWithTheFeatherTattoo · 17/08/2013 22:22

My best friend is 5 foot 2 Sad and the other ladies at work are no taller than 5'6

I am 5'11 and almost always wear heels. Do you work in 1956? Tall is good, sod the shortarses.

TheGirlWithTheFeatherTattoo · 17/08/2013 22:23

(sad because I'm jealous, clothes fit her much better too!)

thornrose · 17/08/2013 22:23

I'm the tallest in my family at 5'9/5.10"

I never wear heels or I feel like a self conscious giant!

In my 20's I went out with a gorgeous guy who was really tall. That's the only time I wore heels and secretly enjoyed people looking at us Blush

Nagoo · 17/08/2013 22:24

My friends are all teeny so I know how you feel, but I would work on feeling more secure in your height. I reckon I'd start small and inch my way up :)

Sheshelob · 17/08/2013 22:25

I'm 6'1" in bare feet.

Who are you calling a freak lady?

izzydazzling · 17/08/2013 22:25

Just be gloriously Amazonian - if you're taller than some men at work, so what?

(having said that I'd go comfort over glamour any day)

MoreThanWords · 17/08/2013 22:26

I'm 5'9" and wear heels to scare the kids at school

lifesgreatquestions · 17/08/2013 22:26

I wanted to be taller, I'm 5'7". I don't wear heels because they hurt, if you enjoy wearing heels then do it. you don't know what other people are thinking, and at least some of them will be like me, admiring your height!

CeliaLytton · 17/08/2013 22:28

YANBU to not wear heels if you don't want to, but if you would like to then do and practise walking tall (sorry) and loving your height!

lifesgreatquestions · 17/08/2013 22:29

I'm taller than my oh too. it was, stupidly, something we both had to get to grips with so I understand your fears, but it is perfectly fine.

MagratOfStolat · 17/08/2013 22:30

I'm 5ft and I would literally chop my legs off and swap them with you. I despise being short. I have to jump to get things off shelves, use stools to look at the back of my cupboards, stand on tiptoes just to be able to kiss my DP on the neck...

I'd love to be tall!

MrsHarryRamsden · 17/08/2013 22:32

If i was a tall willowy 5 ft 9 i would wear heels but i am fairly well rounded and just feel quite ungainly being larger and taller at the sme time iykwim

Littlefish · 17/08/2013 22:32

Just go for it! A close family member of mine is 6ft 2 and she wears heels. She looks amazing and always walks with such confidence. There is no way anyone would call her a freak!

TheGirlWithTheFeatherTattoo · 17/08/2013 22:33

Oh is 6 foot 2 so I'm very lucky as I would feel uncomfortable dating a shorter guy which is pathetic I know!

Maybe I'll brave the heels on Monday!

I'm out of practice to do I'd look like a baby giraffe!

6ft by about 13 years old so have always been gawked at.

Currently about 5' 10 (shrinking thanks to a spine curve) but I love wearing heels. My 5 inch Iron Fist heels are my pride and joy.

Embrace the height!! Grin

scarletforya · 17/08/2013 22:35

Yanbu.

I'm 5'6" but I have size 7 feet. I never wear heels as I feel like a drag queen in them and my feet seem to look huge like sideshow Bobs! Makes me feel awkward and unfeminine!

pixwix · 17/08/2013 22:37

Do you like wearing heels? If so - fecking go for it!! Be proud!

Meself am 5ft 3, and don't wear heels cos I doon't get on with em.

Actually - I did wear heels once - an ex-boyfriend of mine was quite turned on by them, so as a bedroom laugh, I wore em (he bought em!)

I staggered across the bedroom enticingly and laviciously, fell over, smacked into the doorhandle and blacked my eye Blush

But hell - go for it!

Naoko · 17/08/2013 22:38

I'm 6', and I'm no freak lady! Wear your heels. You are not wearing heels to make you taller, you are wearing heels because you like wearing heels. I don't often wear heels because I can't walk in the bloody things, but on the rare occasion where I do I usually tower over everyone in the room. In this country, anyway. (Not so in my native Netherlands, where my height is more common) And why shouldn't I? Being tall is nothing to be ashamed of, just as being short or average height isn't, it just is.

ArgyMargy · 17/08/2013 22:38

YANBU. I am always wary of freakishly tall women who insist on wearing heels. Some kind of complex or attention-seeking behaviour, I think.

Naoko · 17/08/2013 22:39

...cross post with ArgyMargy. seriously?! Thanks for that.
