to never wear heels so I'm not freak-lady at work

I'm fairly tall, not huge, standing at 5 foot 9. I've always been the short one in my family (my mum is 6 foot) and I never thought much of it.

But now I've become increasingly aware of being tall and feel unable to wear heels - particularly at work - because they make me considerably taller than everyone else. Including the men which makes me feel silly.

AIBU the veto heels completely?

I am 5'8", shortest of my siblings, and rarely wear heels, as much to do with comfort as I have very wide feet. Then I discovered White Stuff wedges which fit brilliantly. I sometimes wear them to work. I work in a male dominated profession and the extra height makes me feel empowered.

mezza123 · 18/08/2013 07:46

I'm 5 10 3/4 and I've always felt a bit broad shouldered - think I'll get a tape measure later and measure me! I don't wear heels, mainly because I like comfort but also because I don't want to be miles taller than everyone else including DH! I'm not small either (12/14) so I know what PPs mean about feeling really 'big' all over. I used to be skinnier pre kids but never appreciated it then!
If any of u tallies have good tips for posture - maybe exercises or something - would love to hear! I'm a stooper.

themaltesefalcon · 18/08/2013 07:50

I love being taller than most other people when I've got massive heels on. I moved to a country where most of the population are smaller than me- result! Maybe I have "woman of medium height syndrome."

Am only 5"8, and envy you your extra height. :)

themaltesefalcon · 18/08/2013 07:50

Mezza- adult ballet and yoga.

LustyBusty · 18/08/2013 08:12

I'm 5ft11 and spend my time probably 50/50 flats/heels. And I only wear skyscrapers (3inch+) I love the walk I have in heels (I have one leg shorter than the other, not noticeably, but heels make my hips roll!!) and weirdly, my posture is better in heels than in flats. Grin
I'm also "big all over", but seemingly in proportion, as people seem to remember me as smaller than I am (size 16 bottom, but to get room for shoulders and boobs, I'm often in a 24... Or a pepperberry 18super curvy!)
OP, if you want to wear heels, stuff what anyone else thinks and wear them!!

waltzingmathilda · 18/08/2013 08:17

In an office environment I've always worn heels - they make me feel good, look good, plus of course height equates to a mysterious power. I love heels.

Weaselicious · 18/08/2013 08:19

Please please please OP, if you want to wear gorgeous high heeled shoes, do! I'm nearly 6'1" and I love mine. Two of my best friends are just over 5', and I am taller than lots of people at work (though DH is 6'4"), and it couldn't matter less to any of us. Now, buying trousers? That's a pain!

Weaselicious · 18/08/2013 08:21

Oh, and mezza, my v short grandmother (ironically) always said to her very tall offspring and grandchildren "if you're going to be tall, be tall", ie, if that's who you are, work it :)

diddl · 18/08/2013 08:22

I'm barely 5ft so am short whatever I wear!

I don't like stuff like Converse or ballet flats-because it feels like there's no support.

I can't walk in high heels anymore-& they just seems to emphasise how short I am.

So I tend to go for a medium heel.

Wear what you want/are comfortable in.

LessMissAbs · 18/08/2013 08:29

At 5 feet 9, you tower over he men at your work if you wear heels? Which country are you in OP?

exoticfruits · 18/08/2013 08:34

I wouldn't not wear them because of height- I don't wear them because they are not comfortable and I can't walk fast.

NickyNackyNooNoo · 18/08/2013 08:34

I agree I'm 5'9 & there seems to be alot of short arsed men around!

If I wear heels I'm taller than about 80% of my male colleagues/friends. I just need to practice walking more lady like in them mis spent youth in dm boots

But I agree stand tall Grin

trikken · 18/08/2013 08:35

5'11 and have just started wearing heels to work. I do feel a bit giant-esque but it doesnt matter as long as you are comfortable in them.

trikken · 18/08/2013 08:37

Im taller than the men at my work.

Dackyduddles · 18/08/2013 09:07

Dunno about bu but you are definitely ridiculous to do it for feeling talk at just 5.9.

I'm 5.9. It really ain't that tall.

ThatsSoVanquish · 18/08/2013 10:34

I'm 6'.

Sometimes I wear heels, sometimes I don't. Depends on the outfit. There are a couple of female colleagues who make remarks with a bit of an edge - maybe I work with Argy? However most people couldn't give a stuff what shoes their colleagues are wearing!

Why bother what others think. I just feel that I am going to appear tall no matter what. That's because I am tall! There's nothing wrong with that so no reason to limit what you want to wear because a small proportion of people are insecure, jealous or whatever.

Also 5'9" is on the tall side, but even in heels you'll still be smaller than your Mum, so not that tall!

forehead · 18/08/2013 10:43

My dd is 10 and 5ft 7 . She has already told me that even if she gets taller, she will wear high heels. Now that's what you call having high self-esteem.
Wear your heels with pride.

Fyouimfabulous · 18/08/2013 11:03

There's a woman at my work who is your height and mostly wears heels except on icy winter days when she wears boots although these are often with a wedge, I think she looks absolutely stunning!
My best friend is about 5 foot 7-8 and rarely wears heels and I am always telling her that she looks fab wearing them!

Both are very slim, pear shaped figures with super long legs and I am of the opinion that sod what other people think, you should wear what you feel happy and comfortable in!

I should add, I am only 5 foot 1, and have developed problems from wearing heels a lot at work so now wear ballet pumps or flat biker boots so you can imagine the height difference, but I'd never tell them to wear flats too, to accommodate my short stature!

ArgyMargy · 18/08/2013 11:08

Goodness ThatsSo, I would never make a comment - how rude! Yes I am jealous of tall ladies because I am indeed an average height shortarse. But actually it's not really the tallness that irritates me, it's when tall women wear heels and then stoop, slouch, hunch etc. Men (not in heels) who do that I also find annoying. If you're tall, stand tall!! And shout down to me! GrinGrin

TheGirlWithTheFeatherTattoo · 18/08/2013 13:33

Strangely, at 5 foot 9 I still am taller than a fair few men, especially in heels. When I was single it made a noticeable impact on the amount of eligible men (because I would want someone taller than me, petty, I know)

I'm in England, so nowhere with a low height average.

When I wear heels I am the same height as my Mum and its funny to look her in the eye!

OH was the first man I bought home that was taller than my Mum. His Dad is shorter and looked very uncomfortable when they met!

Then I had a family BBQ and my family walked around towering over his Grin
