Probably been done before ,however just saw an advert about a new and improved chocolate breakfast cereal.
Is chocolate for breakfast just wrong?

OP posts:
MrsMongoose · 16/08/2013 17:00

I eat Nutella with a spoon for breakfast sometimes. You're going to hate me OP!

olidusUrsus · 16/08/2013 17:18

So much clenching on this thread it's unreal... I'll come back and add something constructive later when I can be arsed maybe

Emilythornesbff · 16/08/2013 19:41

Chocolate cereal is passé.
The best breakfast is coffee and chocolate Cake Grin

Toadinthehole · 17/08/2013 02:33

Porridge.

Elsiequadrille · 17/08/2013 02:40

Is fine now and again. Why not.

As children I used to have buns, with what I think were, pieces of glacé cherry. I don't know if they had a special name, but we occasionally had them for breakfast.

Elsiequadrille · 17/08/2013 02:42

Although, I know of somebody (adult) who would often have mars bar and cola for breakfast. I draw the line there, my stomach is too delicate.

ZingWantsCake · 17/08/2013 03:16

Of course YABU!
my kids would laugh in your face and blow raspberries at you.Grin

chocolate is always appropriate.
even now.

Agree with whymummywhy regarding the Alphabites by Bear. Dd seems to really love them and they're multigrain but no sugar - sweetened with coconut nectar I think. Bought them in Waitrose.

She's never had sweetened cereal but it was getting increasingly difficult to find things she wanted to eat for breakfast.

Crumbledwalnuts · 17/08/2013 04:14

you are so right! protein protein protein! most cereals are rubbish for breakfast and are only good as fast food for students. Chocolate cereal is like welcome to your first sugar rush of the day

BigBoobiedBertha · 17/08/2013 05:04

It isn't wrong in the sense it that you shouldn't eat chocolate for breakfast from a taste point of view. Full English or the continental cheese and ham are however very, very wrong. Who wants lunch food when they first wake up? Bleurgh.

From a nutritional point of view some of the cereals are trully horrendous for sugar but not all of them - chocolate Shreddies and chocolate Wheats are about half the sugar of CocoPops for example - low enough for every day consumption. Cocopops and all the variations are a holiday treat (DS1 was overjoyed to find they still do Coco Munchers on the continent when they no longer sell it here). No problem with sugar rush and being left hungry after an hour here though. The DSs seem fine until lunchtime on a large bowl of chocolatey cereal.

However, because you are lumping in pain au chocolate with breakfast cereal which I never eat, regardless of sensible nutritional advice, YABVU.

Btw, I have to have a little chuckle at the people who say they don't give their children cereals and then say they give them muesli and porridge instead. Since when have muesli and porridge not been cereals?! Confused

HenriettaHedgehog · 17/08/2013 06:20

Every month, just before the onset of AF, I'm in the kitchen making porridge with a healthy tablespoon of Betty Crocker chocolate icing. Would highly recommend to anyone in favour of a chocolate breakfast Grin

Bertha, I think they are contrasting branded breakfast cereals and muesli and porridge, rather than talking about "cereals" generally. Grin Unless it's the very sugary muesli, I think people who bother to give their children porridge and try to avoid eg co co pops know what they mean by cereals. If I said cereals, I would include co co pops even though that isn't a cereal, but I wouldn't include porridge. I would be talking about the crap that comes in fancy boxes loaded with sugar.

conorsrockers · 17/08/2013 08:18

Fairdene - sorry for not replying! A pack of Smoked Salmon in Tesco's is the same as a pack of decent sausages and lasts a week for two of us - its not as expensive as people think!!!

ZingWantsCake · 17/08/2013 08:42

Cake & Brew anyone? Grin

MrsHoarder · 17/08/2013 08:58

I'll have a Biscuit instead thanks. or poached egg on marmite toast

Toadinthehole · 17/08/2013 09:11

I would love a Full English served to me by my DW in a French Maid outfit.

BigBoobiedBertha · 17/08/2013 15:30

Crumbledwalnuts - I know exactly what they are doing. They are being superior because they have porridge and muesli rather than the sugar coated nonsense like Cocopops but it is a false divide. They are all cereals, found in the cereal aisle of the supermarket and made from cereal crops which are then processed. Some muesli has as much sugar as Cocopops and there are plenty of branded mueslis so I don't think 'brand' has much to do with it. Same goes for those who turn their nose up at sugary cereals and then cover their porridge in honey which is also just sugar. There are a lot of double standards on this thread.

kerstina · 17/08/2013 15:46

Have tried most chocolate cereals and most are too sugary but have found one recently that is really, really nice. The slow baked chocolate crunch one in the packet rather than box. It tastes so nice but I am sure it can't be healthy!

CerealMom · 17/08/2013 16:11

Asda used to sell a (organic?) chocolate granola. Oh my it was delish.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/08/2013 16:25

Neither of mine like chocolate cereal (weirdos, I lived on coco pops when I was growing up)

They prefer eggs (poached or boiled)
and Weetabix.

Oh they do like nutella on toast though.

Crumbledwalnuts · 17/08/2013 16:37

I think it is superior to give porridge rather than sugar-coated nonsense. I don't suppose people give much thought to impressing others when they do so - more like improving their child's nutrition. I should think they've probably looked at the nutritional value of oats versus..... coco pops and decided that the competition is weak Grin

Crowler · 17/08/2013 16:38

Same goes for those who turn their nose up at sugary cereals and then cover their porridge in honey which is also just sugar. There are a lot of double standards on this thread.

Are you kidding? You think sugary cereal is as good a breakfast as porridge and honey?

Sugary cereal is the work of the devil. Kids need a healthy, substantial breakfast so they can function properly at school. Eggs/porridge/fruit/smoked salmon etc.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 17/08/2013 16:53

Coco Shreddies, or even better Coco Orange Shreddies are fantastic... Ellen I had no idea, none at all that such a thing existed, I have just had to order an online shop to taste such delight. Smile
