Probably been done before ,however just saw an advert about a new and improved chocolate breakfast cereal.
Is chocolate for breakfast just wrong?

yanbu but all sugary cereals are a problem, it's no wonder so many kids are ridiculously fat, have attention disorders, hyperactivity, underactivity, sleep disorders, behavioural problems, type 2 diabetes and other sugar overload caused health issues. No child should eat sugar for breakfast or any other meal for that matter and to fill them with crap on a daily basis is child abuse, it's the parents responsibility to get off their arse and provide a healthy meal for their child.

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2013 20:27

YABU.

Chocolate for breakfast is soooo right.

Think pain au choclate. Think nutella on a big slab of homemade wholemeal bread. Think pealed pears sprinkled with hot chocolate. All acompanied by a hot chocolate.

Breakfast cereals on the other hand...I mean Rice Crispies....if you mashed them up you'd have a thimble full of dust. That's not going to sustain anybody all morning. And don;t get me started on Frosties or Sugar Puffs.

Now, I do like cocoa pops, but they aren't that filling for breakfast, so you're going to have to down a blueberry smoothy first, kids.

StiffGandT · 15/08/2013 20:29

My DD is diary intolerant and only likes choc flavoured soya milk, dietitian said to give it for breakfast with cereal. When I expressed horror at the thought of chocolate for breakfast I was told to do whatever it takes to get the calcium into her.

usualsuspect · 15/08/2013 20:30

Eating coco pops is child abuse is it?

You better call SS then, because my DS eats them by the bucket full.

Myliferocks · 15/08/2013 20:30

Breakfast is the one meal that I'm not too bothered what my DC eat as long as they eat something whether that be a bowl of chocolate cereal or just a yoghurt.

usualsuspect · 15/08/2013 20:31

He gets off his own arse and gets them too.

phantomnamechanger · 15/08/2013 20:33

TBH I am far more concerned about the huge numbers of DC who regularly eat NO breakfast at all. And the teenage girls who skip breakfast as they are on a diet Sad

justaweeone · 15/08/2013 20:36

My Dc have Nutella on bread and pain au choc as a treat on hols but it is the marketing that is just so wrong
My Ds loves a hard boiled egg more than anything but it is the marketing that that he is drawn to for choc .

Exactly phantomnamechanger

My eldest is 17 and trying to get her to eat breakfast is a nightmare. On the days she doesn't eat breakfast she then wonders why she feels dizzy later on in the morning.
I'd love her to eat a proper breakfast every day but if she's only going to eat a bag of crisps and a biscuit for breakfast sometimes then I'll take that.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 15/08/2013 20:39

Cereal of any kind isn't good for anyone for breakfast. It's just sugar/empty carbs.

LOL at the poster who is happy to give their kids Rice Crispies but doesn't think the chocolate ones are nutritious enough - I would love to know what nutrition they think is in Rice Crispies Grin

Protein for breakfast - start the day properly :)

LegoAcupuncture · 15/08/2013 20:40

Zatya are you really insinuating sugary cereals make children have ADHD Hmm

I can't see the harm in having the occasional "fun" breakfast. As long as they're eating a reasonably balanced diet through the week there shouldn't be a problem.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 15/08/2013 20:40

But - if we were talking taste alone, I'd be in there Grin I love the ones you can buy in france, quite a solid outer casing with chocolate inside... To Die For (though almost literally if you ate it all the time...)

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2013 20:41

HeySoulSister, One of my DC is a snacker. Always has been. Never eats a full meal. He can sniff out chocolate at fifty paces. He loves a jam doughnut more than me, his own mother.

He is also far from obese. His ribs are rather obvious.

dementedma · 15/08/2013 20:41

Ds won't eat breakfast at all. Just started high school and I'd be happy if he had a bowl of anything before he went out to be honest.

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2013 20:42

And the French snack more than the English. They don't tend to be obese.

DontmindifIdo · 15/08/2013 20:42

See, I was raised having cocopops, but then I have always had an issue with milk (as in, I hate the bloody stuff, always have), so my parents gave me cocopops as the milk went chocolatey, stopped tasting of milk and it was the only way to get me to have it.

I realised I couldn't have it any more as I will eat a bowl of cocopops then will need a top up meal at around 10:30am. Whereas, if i have a bowl of porridge with some banana on it (to hide the milky taste), it's about the same number of calories but I'm suddenly surprised it's nearly 1pm and I'm only just feeling hungry and haven't felt the need to snack.

Therefore, cocopops are now an 'evening treat' for days I've eaten with DS at 5pm and it's just far too long to last until bedtime with no additional food...

What is this 'Weetabix is the devil's work' thing I've noticed on Mnet recently? It's low fat, low sugar, high fibre, whole grain, filling. What's so bad about it?

DontmindifIdo · 15/08/2013 20:44

oh and I've magically managed to convince DS that "brown rice krispies" aren't as nice as the white ones, in the same vain that he prefers white bread over brown and white pasta over brown... Grin

Sirzy · 15/08/2013 20:44

I wondered that speed

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 15/08/2013 20:47

DS2 would eat chocolate for breakfast, dinner and tea if I let him.

I don't. But he does have choc cereal as a treat sometimes, or Nutella.

DS1 would like bacon and eggs every day, but that ain't happening either.

DontmindifIdo · 15/08/2013 20:48

Speedwellblue - some people take the low carb thing to a silly almost religious level - they seem to see all carbs as the devils work and to be avoided at all costs, I've seen people talking about fruit and veg as 'bad for you' FFS. That they are 'just carbs' (yes, and a shed load of vitimins too you dog breathed, constipated freak)

IME - the best way to eat is to chose food that's had the minimum fuss/messing to it, so wheetabix with it's one ingredient is pretty good on that.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 15/08/2013 20:48

I love coco pops, mmm mmm.

wharrgarbl · 15/08/2013 20:52

Coco Orange Shreddies

Good grief. I would never leave the house.

Heh, and if you think chocolate cereal is bad, never live in France. Finding cereal that isn't chocolate here is quite hard.

LegoAcupuncture · 15/08/2013 20:58

Ds2 has weetabix every day for his breakfast, with warm milk. He has done since he was weaning, he even has it when we are on holiday and refuses to change. He has autism and not so much as a cocopop has passed his lips. He doesn't even like the chocolate weetabix.
