Probably been done before ,however just saw an advert about a new and improved chocolate breakfast cereal.
Is chocolate for breakfast just wrong?

FoundAChopinLizt · 16/08/2013 08:46

Yes, Tantrums.

DDs carbed up diet would horrify some people.

Toadinthehole · 16/08/2013 08:54

Giving children chocolate-flavoured anything on a routine basis (rather than as an occasional treat) is irresponsible, and gets their eating off to a bad start - both for the day and for their lives. Especially the latter, because they are being set up for a lifetime of guilt by fighting a sugar-gutsing habit.

phantomnamechanger · 16/08/2013 09:09

having worked in a school in one of the most deprived areas of the midlands, I actually think that a bowl of sugary cereal WITH MILK - is the most nutritious meal some kids get in a day - cos its a white bread and jam sandwich and a bag of crisps for lunch, and chips, pizza or McDs for tea - hardly any fruit or veg at all

at least the cereals do have vitamins and iron - important in an otherwise crap diet

LynetteScavo · 16/08/2013 10:00

Well, we've all just made ourselves microwave chocolate brownie in a mug for breakfast. Shock Grin

We will be having vegetable soup for lunch and curry for dinner.

DS1 has just put a Power Aid bottle in the recycling. Now, energy drinks are just wrong!

Hazelbrowneyes · 16/08/2013 10:05

I love chocolate flavoured cereals. Cookie crisp is lovely (it's nestle, so shoot me) but my all time favourite is coco pops. YUM.

Of course, any future children will not be having ghastly coco pops or cookie crisp for breakfast because it's all mine and I don't want to share

I always used to go to bed with a glass of nesquik and 3 bourbon biscuits too, ahhh I miss my childhood.

Hazelbrowneyes · 16/08/2013 10:10

Oh and I've just remembered...my favourite ever breakfast was roast potatoes in a big bowl of thick gravy with dollops of ketchup in it on a Sunday morning. I used to eat it in bed too. Grin

My lovely Dad would get up super early to get the potatoes in the oven. After I'd finished, he'd bring me up a dessert of 3 bourbon biscuits and a huge glass of orange juice. Mum never knew and always wondered why I wasn't hungry come lunchtime.

My Dad was the bestest and totally wrapped around my little finger

Sparklysilversequins · 16/08/2013 10:11

So what IS a good breakfast? If cereal isn't. You can't eat eggs every day, toast on its own is not that substantial. Cured meats aren't good eaten every day.

So what constitutes a good breakfast?

HeySoulSister · 16/08/2013 10:24

But the sugar cycle means they crave more... Quickly. So are hungry quicker ( hence the snacking culture )

Sugar is in most things ( especially aimed at children) in some form, keeps them coming back for more...and more..

If you are at home you can feed them something substantial soon after I suppose, but in school they won't have the option til lunchtime

HeySoulSister · 16/08/2013 10:25

sparkly meat and veg!

Sallystyle · 16/08/2013 10:26

Mine eat chocolate ready brek or chocolate weetabix pretty much 5 mornings a week.

The rest of their diet is good so I have no problems with this.

LynetteScavo · 16/08/2013 10:41

I'll tell you what is a really good breakfast...apple crumble. People at work think I'm weird.

Sparklysilversequins · 16/08/2013 10:46

See I don't think that's weird. It's pretty much the same ingredients as toast and fruit isn't it?

It's like pizza, which many deem unhealthy but is essentially cheese and tomato on toast.

Lulabellarama · 16/08/2013 10:52

Meh - mine have chocolate cereal at the weekend. The more forbidden something is the more likely they will OD on it when given free reign.

I have a spinach, seed and fruit smoothie for breakfast during the week and eggs and bacon/salmon/beans at the weekend. But then I am on a bit of smug annoying health kick at the moment.

MrsHoarder · 16/08/2013 10:59

Proper (high fat) yoghurt and fruit.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/08/2013 12:18

Yabu - coco pops are great.

FoundAChopinLizt · 16/08/2013 12:18

Of course, chocolate for breakfast is ok for dcs at Christmas and Easter, I'm not a complete food fascist.Wink

phantomnamechanger · 16/08/2013 13:44

I love left over trifle for breakfast in the days after christmas. yum.

what about eggs - lots of people saying they are their DCs staple breakfast but I thought these should be limited.

My DC have egg sandwiches/homemade quiche/omelette a couple of times a week so loads of eggs for breakfast would surely be wrong??

ShakeAndVac · 16/08/2013 14:37

YANBU, chocolate cereal or any cereal with sugar on is just rank.
Although my two DS would heartily disagree, as they love Coco Pops. I'm mean though as they're only allowed it every now and again.
Most of the time it's boring 'proper' cereal here such as porridge, weetabix, Shredded Wheat or Rice Crispies.
Chocolate and cereal?! Bleee!

SoftSheen · 16/08/2013 14:54

Nothing wrong with chocolate cereal on the odd occasion. The problem is that you have to buy a whole box with ten or twenty servings in it.

Healthy breakfasts would be:

porridge made with milk and fresh/dried fruit
plain cereals (shredded wheat, weetabix etc) with milk and fruit
muesli (no sugar versions)
granola with yoghurt and fruit
poached/scrambled eggs on granary toast
mushroom or herb omlette
Eggy bread with lots of honey
wholemeal banana pancakes with berries
wholemeal toast with peanut butter
toasted bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon
Cheese and apple on toast

MurielHeslopp · 16/08/2013 16:11

Some nice ideas there, thanks SoftSheen

cocolepew · 16/08/2013 16:31

In reference to the posters saying it rots their teeth my DDs gave never needed anything done at the dentist. Their teeth are perfect.

KissMeHardy · 16/08/2013 16:39

27 years ago I was in the throes of working as a Market Researcher. One of our Surveys was on chocolate breakfast cereal and, without exception, every child hated it. But the big companies are still plugging away at it !!

MummyPig24 · 16/08/2013 16:45

I haven't had chocolate cereal for aaaaages. I sometimes buy coco pops for the kids though. One box a month on average. I also love chocolate brioche, pain au chocolat. Mmmm.

MummyPig24 · 16/08/2013 16:46

I had coco pops every day as a child and I have only had one filling.

TheGinLushMinion · 16/08/2013 16:59

Chocolate is good anytime, YABU.
