To tell you to check your KINDLE Keyboard 3G for cracks if you have one?

If your Kindle Keyboard 3G has a hairline crack running diagonally downwards from the bottom corner of the screen to the edge of the casing, it's a very common fault.

It can cause the screen to completely freeze up months down the line. If you are then out of your warranty time, you're stuffed. If you're within warranty, get Amazon to change it now, even if the device is currently working.

Hoping to prevent this giving anyone else the Angry

Ours has one. Had it a long time - common fault. The screens are incredibly fragile, so get a case for it. Had to send ours for repair.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 31/07/2013 12:32

DH had two of them do it, no obvious crack but they both had the screen freeze ONE WEEK out of warranty!

Anthracite · 31/07/2013 12:33

All of our Kindle Keyboards self-destructed.

The non-keyboard ones have been fine.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 31/07/2013 12:35

(The first one they replaced no problem. The second they refused until he emailed the CEO! The internet is very handy for finding email addresses Grin )

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 31/07/2013 12:36

TheFuzz It had a case - not that it ever needed one - it rarely left the house!

Glad yours was repaired.

Mine has one. How long is the warranty?

Should be covered by the sale of goods act, no?

Wilding · 31/07/2013 12:45

I went through 5 within warranty but the last one broke just outside so I couldn't get a replacement from Amazon. I ended up buying a new screen from eBay and fitting ityself- not a particularly cheap option at £50 but quite easy and much better than buying a new kindle!

Anthracite · 31/07/2013 12:53

I can beat you on broken screens! I am onto my 12th Kindle :)

They are quite inexpensive now - £69 - so not worth getting a bulky keyboard repaired.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 31/07/2013 12:55

Warranty is for 1 year Tethersend

Wilding did the screen you got from Ebay include the front casing too? It seems that the cracking in the casing causes the screen to fail IYSWIM.

I've just checked mine, and it has it! Shock it is, however, out of warranty. Think I'm a bit fucked. I do have a cover on it, though. and want a paper white

Sallyingforth · 31/07/2013 21:10

Mine was one of the first to be sold in the UK. It's been in a leather case since new and although treated roughly at times there is not a mark on it. I do think that something that size needs a protective case. But it's been recharged so many times that the battery has just about worn out, so I've just treated myself to a Paperwhite - with the (exorbitantly priced) case.

Wilding · 01/08/2013 14:41

No, no casing unfortunately LetsFace, I'm not sure how you'd go about solving that one Sad

And I think that it's definitely worth repairing a keyboard Kindle, especially if you have the 3G version - you can play music/audiobooks on it without having to use headphones, and go on the internet for free wherever you are in the world - the new ones aren't half as good!

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/08/2013 14:47

I agree Wilding - mine's the 3G version and it's worth the hassle to get it fixed. Amazon have now said that they will give me a refurbished one (fair enough- well pleased) but I have to wait 6-7 weeks. I'm ok with that but I would have liked to take it on my holidays.

I am nurturing mine. I could get a new one on warranty, but... it won't be 3G. They no longer sell 3G in the UK. So if you have a 3G one, do whatever you have to in order to maintain it.

Anthracite · 01/08/2013 15:06

My experience of using a 3G kindle is that you could only use 3G to connect to the Kindle Store, not have free reign over the Internet.

With Wifi Kindles, it is easy enough to tether from a smartphone.

Sallyingforth · 01/08/2013 15:09

Yes, you can get email over 3G and do some basic browsing, but it's very clunky and of course the screen isn't ideal.

afterallivedone · 01/08/2013 15:11

My 3G kindle allows me to go to any website, I first bought it a couple of years ago (but had about 4 versions as screen/battery kept breaking!) and I think the newer ones were more restrictive about the websites they allow. The 3G is useful when wifi isn't available and you don't want to pay for smartphone roaming charges abroad, but it's veeery slow!

CamelBalls · 01/08/2013 15:24

Mine does too! :(

What is the paper white like? Xx

CamelBalls · 01/08/2013 15:25

I didnt mean to put the " xx " Blush

cacamilis · 01/08/2013 15:30

Paper white looks great, my sister has one and loves it for night time reading, I would go for that if my one ever bites the dust, which I hope it will not for a long time.
Do you all use tuebl.com for downloading free books?

Sallyingforth · 01/08/2013 15:36

The paperwhite is great, especially for reading in bed. But after years of using the keyboard version I still keep reaching for the page up/down buttons instead of swiping! It's much better though IMO and smaller too.
I love the way it switches on/off when you close the cover (if you have one)

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/08/2013 21:10

Well, there's a turn up for the books. I've been offered a 3G Paperwhite because of the long wait for a refurbished Keyboard (I didn't complain about the wait). Good on Amazon for that and thanks to Beyond for the tip.

I've accepted on the basis that after my holiday, I can always sell it on Ebay and buy a Keyboard 3G instead if I don't like it. I do feel cheeky doing that though. I just wanted the Kindle I had to not be broken IYSWIM.

So come on, tell me I'm a lucky cah because the Paperwhite is fab Smile
