To tell you to check your KINDLE Keyboard 3G for cracks if you have one?

If your Kindle Keyboard 3G has a hairline crack running diagonally downwards from the bottom corner of the screen to the edge of the casing, it's a very common fault.

It can cause the screen to completely freeze up months down the line. If you are then out of your warranty time, you're stuffed. If you're within warranty, get Amazon to change it now, even if the device is currently working.

Hoping to prevent this giving anyone else the Angry

DH is reading his paperwhite by the side of me now, he loves it.

Glad it worked for you!

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/08/2013 21:31

I went through 6 kindles in 19 months (not sure how if the warranty was only 12 months) then when the screen on 6 cracked, they gave me my money back so I could buy a paper white. Amazing customer service I thought. The paper white is brilliant.

I've just checked my Kindle keyboard WiFi on the back of this thread. Mine has got a crack in it too.Sad. It has never been dropped, always in a case and been treated very, very well.

Do I just google the name of the CEO of Amazon and email them, LetsFacetheMusic?

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 01/08/2013 22:03

If it's within warranty, just contact their customer services. Point out that you are concerned because yours has a crack and this is a common problem. Refer them to their own support forum.

Mine has a crack too....never even been out the house, let alone anything else! Well out of warranty though......Sad

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 01/08/2013 22:33

Ok, my Kindle 3G is nearly two years old now, never had even the slightest hint of a problem. I get that some might have manufacturing faults and I get that some people have accidents, but anyone going through 5, 10, 15 Kindles in a year is clearly not looking after them properly and not only that, but they know they aren't because let's face it, if you have the same bit of kit fail on you more than a few times you give up and buy something else.

As a side note, I love my Kindle, especially that I can pick up where I left off on my phone or tablet too, whenever, wherever. Just what I need Smile

littlemisswise · 01/08/2013 22:36

Mine's out of warranty.Sad I'll have to read it until it freezes then have a new one for Christmas.

ilovesooty · 02/08/2013 00:09

I bought an extended warranty on mine, and I'm glad I did. It froze on me completely in May and they sent a new one out within 24 hours. Prior to that I had one replaced for screen problems and one due to accidental damage.

I don't go for extended warranty normally but it was money well spent.

littlemisswise · 04/08/2013 14:34

I have just this minute got off the phone to Amazon about my Kindle. I explained it has been well looked after, never been dropped and always been kept in one of their lighted, leather cases.

The lady was really, really helpful. She said straight away I could have a Kindle touch and a new lighted case because my case wouldn't fit the new Kindle. Then when she checked they had no cases. She suggested a Kindle Paperwhite, but had to check with her manager. I almost fell off the chair when she came back and said yes. Shock Smile Grin

My new Kindle comes tomorrow!

noblegiraffe · 04/08/2013 15:18

Littlemiss, do you have to send your old one back or can they deactivate it somehow? My DH has a crack in his 3G Kindle and is interested! He wonders if they are giving out replacements just to get people off the old unlimited 3G deal.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/08/2013 15:24

I thought mine had been trod on by one of the small folk!

But I do love the keyboard part of it!

littlemisswise · 04/08/2013 15:29

She didn't say I had to send it back Noble, so I don't honestly know. I wondered about it to DH as soon as I got off the phone. Mine is WiFi, though so they aren't getting me off 3G.

I've just ordered silicone case for the new one, lots of people who have reviewed the case I ordered say they bought it because their Kindles cracked in the other cases. I have my iPad in a Garmin case. I might have a google to see if they make Kindle cases.

littlemisswise · 04/08/2013 15:30

Doh, Griffin not Garmin!

needasilverlining · 04/08/2013 17:18

Mine has had those cracks for ages, and today - after I read this thread - the screen froze. I nearly died.
Started again thank God.

Have to nurse it till end of week (on hold), back up library and investigate terms of extended warranty I vaguely remember buying.

ilovesooty · 04/08/2013 17:31

need your library is archived to your account and available at any time. If you give Kindle Support a ring they will have the details of your warranty.

needasilverlining · 04/08/2013 18:13

The Amazon ones are OK, but I have lots of books from other sources so would need to back up. Is PITA but not as much as reconstructing from scratch.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 04/08/2013 18:19

I don't want to sound like a party pooper but the Paperwhite isn't all that. Sad

The screen has a weird greenish hue in places and the light is just odd. I also preferred the button to turn pages.

I can get on Mumsnet on it though - so nota all bad Smile.

Ah flip mine has one. I assume I'm out of warranty have it longer than a year. My laptop just broke so could do without having to buy a new kindle as well. Hopefully will keep going another while.

Can you still get the 3G in America? I'm in Ireland and we have to buy from the US store rather than UK store so hopefully can be replaced. I love the 3G.

SsimTee · 04/08/2013 19:06

Mine has the same hairline fracture. Didn't realise it was a common fault, I've just been blaming my kids for being rough with it

Sallyingforth · 04/08/2013 19:34

Well I'm absolutely delighted with the Paperwhite. The lighting is quite even from top to bottom. Wouldn't want to go back to the old one now!

littlemisswise · 04/08/2013 19:59

Mine went out of warranty in September 2012, but they are still replacing it, so it might be worth people ringing or emailing.

slalomsuki · 07/08/2013 09:24

Funnily enough after 1 week of working fine on holiday, I read this thread and go to check the kindle and find a crack. Not only that but my screen has completely frozen as well. It's also lost all its charge overnight.

Mine is great and has been well used but also well cared for. I have a kindle HD also but I hate it as I can't read off it well and I prefer the non coloured screen for reading from.

What do you all recommend and I do use the 3G part.

Sallyingforth · 07/08/2013 14:33

You can buy a Paperwhite with 3G. It costs more of course but if it's important to you...

thegreylady · 07/08/2013 14:56

I have had one since they came out and have had no bother at all with it.It has had a leather case from the beginning.
