To think Blackpool is a bit shit

Just came back from Blackpool and it was utter shit. Why haven't the council there made improvements and made it a decent place to visit?

There is hardly anywhere halfway reasonable to eat, it looks completely broken and unloved. There is just so much potential for development and it could be the "Orlando" of England. Instead, it's just shite.

I've come away thinking I don't need to take my children to Africa to appreciate what they've got: just take them to Blackpool.

On a good note, the beach is very nice. Shame about the drunks weeing all over the stairs to the beach and leaving beer cans everywhere. I saw broken Britain in Blackpool and I shall never go back again.

No, can't say i ever did...am old....think the last time i was in the tache was about 1993!!!! hell, i remember the days when the cinemas were cinemas and not nightclubs....running for the last bus after a film, warm wine in yates...and a club i cant remember the name of now...oooh, i also spent a few evenings in the galleon with that musical trio who would play the girl from ipanema for me if i asked....

You know i moved away for nearly 15 years but my memories of blackpool are strongest!!!!

MarmaladeTwatkins · 24/07/2013 16:10

Mumandboys, I'm from Wolverhampton. I have no room in my glass house to fling rocks. Grin

mumandboys123 · 24/07/2013 16:18

Ooh....was it the village? Was that a nightclub or is that from a different part of my mis-spent youth?

chocoluvva · 24/07/2013 16:23

Teenage DC and I went last year for two days. We stayed at the Hilton which was poor for a Hilton but also cheap for a Hilton.

We were pleasantly surprised by how clean the beach/Pleasure Beach was and at the good choice of places to eat at The Pleasure Beach: fresh seafood, noodle bars etc

So many people there were from Liverpool. It was really noticeable.

The Madame Tussauds didn't amount to a great deal IMO.

'in the seaside town that they forgot to close down, come armagedon come armagedon come'

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 24/07/2013 17:04

I love that Morrisey

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 24/07/2013 17:05

oops song but it makes me think of Morecambe. Sorry Morecambe, haven't been there in years.

Owllady · 24/07/2013 17:07

I used that song for my final show at university

Owllady · 24/07/2013 17:09

omg someone from wolvo as well Shock

we are going to barmouth on our annual holiday this year and my youngest said he was so excited about going to wales and when questioned he was excited about the bumper cars Shock :o

ComposHat · 24/07/2013 17:12

Excellent....not the obvious choice for a fashion show, so even more kudos is due!

I love the 'hide on the promenade etch a postcard, how I dearly wish I were not here' I suppose it is a better fit with Morecambe ... silent anf grey Blackpool isn't!

Owllady · 24/07/2013 17:15

I think you have to have lived by the coast to know that end of the world feeling though, especially in winter.

You sit on the beach and look at that massive expanse of sea and you realise how insignificant you are. At that point in my life I think I had a near nervous breakdown but therapy helped :o

insancerre · 24/07/2013 17:24

YANBU
Blackpool is grim
I live in St Annes
it's so much nicer
Butthe punk festival at the winter gardens is bloody fantastic
in fact, I do really like the wintergardens, it's my fav venue for live bands
I also graduated there (twice)

beatback · 24/07/2013 18:22

MARMALADE. Keep EDUCATING people about the charms of BLACKPOOL!

Pilgit · 24/07/2013 18:32

I have been to Blackpool once to visit my then boyfriend whose parents ran a B&B. Their B&B was one of the most hideous shit holes I have ever stayed in (and that includes the ex army barracks for £2 a night in Krakow - which was just scary for the communal mixed showers - but I digress). They didn't change the sheets between guests - just put extra on the bed. The pubs were hideous (and as he was local we went to non-tourist ones), the centre of town was horrid and the people made Londoners look friendly and welcoming to tourists. The best part about it was the train out. I am sure there are other experiences of it though.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 24/07/2013 18:38

Yanbu. It is rough but it can be fun slumming it once in a while. I did not realise how bad it was going to be. I put on a Mulberry bag before we went and dh pissed himself laughing at me and told me I'd be mugged. He was right that the bag was truly surplus to requirements! We had a nice enough day though and endless entertainment gawping at the state of the drunken young stags and hens stumbling around half clothed.Ended up in the Pizza Hut for supper and stopped for a McD drive thru cup of tea on the way home.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 24/07/2013 19:54

Erm OK beatback, WILL DO!

Confused Grin

TimeofChange · 24/07/2013 20:16

Blackpool is wonderful for a couple of days.
The Pleasure Beach is fantastic fun and a lot cleaner than 15 years ago.
The Tower is amazing and then a tram ride through the illuminations is a great experience for kids.

I wouldn't want to go for a week, I would prefer a naice cottage in the country.

It has already been said that a lot of 'problem' families have been moved there from other areas. This has happened a lot too in Colwyn Bay and Rhyl.

I don't want to see drunks half naked on the streets, but that happens every weekend in all cities. I wouldn't go out to Chester in the evening and Race Days are pretty terrible there.

TiggyD · 24/07/2013 20:28

Better than Rhyll.

FunnyLittleFrog · 24/07/2013 20:29

The train from Blackpool North to Leeds of an evening is something of an 'experience'.

The Pleasure Beach is great though, loads of weird old-fashioned rides like Alice in Wonderland and the Grand National.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 24/07/2013 20:32

Rhyl is a special place.

I remember going on a glass-bottomed boat and being confused about why you couldn't see jeff all. I thought they'd got it wrong and we were on an opaque-bottomed boat but no, it was just the putrid water.

There was also a grim museum of Wales there. It made me depressed.

catgirl1976 · 24/07/2013 20:41

Hmm

I went to the Palace once (a loooong time ago)

Someone hit my friend, and then, when he hit the floor, pulled out their penis and pissed on him.

I didn't go a second time.

beatback · 24/07/2013 20:51

MARMALADE ATKINS. If a film was made about life after a NUCLEAR WAR RHYL would be the perfect choice for location work and the costs would be zero because its a ready made set for a film about NUCLEAR ARMAGEDDON . I remember going on a School trip to the SUN CENTRE 28 years ago when the SUN CENTRE WAS DESCRIBED AS " THE MOST MODERN SUN CENTRE IN EUORPE" nuff said i think.

timidviper · 24/07/2013 20:51

I live in one of the "naice" bits outside Blackpool and work in South Shore and Central. I agree with Aquamildred the deprivation is very localised although that doesn't make you feel much better when you work in it!

Many of the problems are caused by people visiting or moving into the area but, I'm afraid, I do blame the council. They have mismanaged the area for ages, turned down all sorts of opportunities such as out of town superstores and leisure places in case they detracted from the centre but not invested in that centre so now there is nothing to attract anybody anywhere near and a huge downward spiral. All my friends shop, go out, etc in Preston, not Blackpool. Their latest idiotic wheeze has reduced the prom to one lane each way in the centre which just jams up the illuminations stupidly. My DB came with his family last year, it took them over an hour to go a mile so they turned around and will never come again.
