To think Blackpool is a bit shit

Just came back from Blackpool and it was utter shit. Why haven't the council there made improvements and made it a decent place to visit?

There is hardly anywhere halfway reasonable to eat, it looks completely broken and unloved. There is just so much potential for development and it could be the "Orlando" of England. Instead, it's just shite.

I've come away thinking I don't need to take my children to Africa to appreciate what they've got: just take them to Blackpool.

On a good note, the beach is very nice. Shame about the drunks weeing all over the stairs to the beach and leaving beer cans everywhere. I saw broken Britain in Blackpool and I shall never go back again.

binky when I was a kid they piped raw sewage in the sea, when it was low tide we used to play on the sewage pipe and swim in the sea with the effluent.

It is a miracle I didn't catch cholera. Funnily enough I have never had a stomach bug in my life, a childhood swimming in shit has made me immune, evidently.

It has got one thing going for it, it doesn't smell like Fleetwood. Fleetwood has the delicate aroma (depending which way the wind is blowing) of rotting fish, sewage works, landfill site and Fishermans Friend.

No, it wasn't on a horse, you got strapped in carriages and went up and down over these fucking terrible wooden hills. I have never been so scared in my life.

Mind you I grip tight when I go on the teacups, so perhaps I am not the best judge.

My dad who is a royal fucking snob very choosy got forced into going there on a last-minute stag weekend after the original plan of going to a real ale festival in Devon got cancelled.

He sent me a text after ONE HOUR of being there saying that he knew what Hell was.

Ditto to the suggestions about Lytham St Anne's. We spend a week in St Anne's every year and just do the odd day trip into Blackpool. St Anne's is lovely and has some really nice restaurants and gorgeous beach. OP, YANBU about Blackpool but the surrounding area is nice!

I love your dad, Marm.

Mind you I have been to real ale festivals in Devon, they get very, very messy indeed. The ale and cider is something ridiculous like 9%. Lots of hollering and running into the sea ime.

leGavorf I have just been informed by DH, who sadly is a man in the know on this site, that they pumped the shit out on an outgoing tide not a low tide, they still pump the shit out but it has now moved further up the coast to anchorsholme.

Anyone still fancy visiting the beach there?

LeGav - Ilfracombe a shit hole? Really? Confused

Sparklingbrook - that'll be the Steeplechase you're thinking of .

It is truly the arsehole of England. I live an hour away, we went a few times as small children and even my 6 year old self could work out what a shit hole it was. And it seems to be bleak, lashing down and blowing a gale for about 340 days of the year.
The Illuminations are shit too - and they beg ask for donations at the start, after you've queued for 2 hours.

It's a terrible, terrible place. Unfortunately, it also happens to be my MIL's favourite place on earth. She constantly suggests we all go on a 'family day out' which I have so far avoided.
Last time DH went with her, on his return he shakily recounted the tale of the the 10p cup of tea his mum had made them go for in an arcade. He's never been the same since. Sad

I loved the Steeplechase- thanks Lazy. You got proper bruises and everything. Grin

It's a shit-heap, drive through it to see the lights at Christmas, don't stop though and avoid it like the plague for the rest of the year.

Instead, come to Southport which was lovely until Blackpool stole all of our fucking attractions is lovely.

/bitterness.

It's weird in a way, though - very few people leave the area (to the extent that it has a higher than average level of genetic disorders). Hardly anyone from my childhood has moved away, and most of those still there cannot understand why I have - they fully believe I will one day come to my senses and move "home".

Given that EVERYONE else can see it, I do wonder why so many within the area cannot.

I hope I don't sound like a snob. As long as folk are happy, that's all good - but it does appear from this thread that the crapness is real, not imagined.

Lytham, bit further down than St. Annes is very nice

No sewage, windmill, lovely restaurants, cobbled streets, a green all along the promenade fishing boats and no drunks except me

Ilfracombe is a shithole if you live there for 27 years. It is a beautiful place, but apart from the summer season very difficult place to live, small town minded, no jobs, drug culture and a lot of poverty. A brilliant place to bring children up but probably the worst place for bored teens, IMO.

This thread is making me feel a bit sad. I haven't been to Blackpool probably for about 30 years but when I was a kid we used to go EVERY YEAR to drive thru the Illuminations and we used to absolutely love it and think it was so exciting! (It was the 70s/80s. Didn't get out much)

LeGavrOrf · 23/07/2013 21:21

Binky I was talking about swimming in shite in Ilfracombe, not Blackpool. Grin. Christ what a strange sentence to type!

As far as I know they don't pump raw sewage into the sea any more. Well that's what they told us.

ANormal - Southport itself is lovely but the name always makes me shudder - I once spent a weekend at Pontins. Nuff said.

Report
CitrusSunshine · 23/07/2013 21:22

I remember it used to take about 3 hours to walk to the sea on Blackpool beach though. We usually used to give up.

That roller-coaster was much scarier than the Pepsi-Max one. I think because it was so old and rickety...

I live fifteen miles from Southend. Seaside towns always attract the disenfranchised. I went to school near there as well, proper bed-sit land, big houses all divided up with a recently-released sex-offender in every attic and all-day drinkers everywhere.

A few of my friends who didn't go to or finish sixth-from college ended up in those houses and they were bloody scary and odd. You'd have for example, the obligatory damp room, attic nonce and a massive bathroom with a double jacuzzi... filled with sand, for example.

Ilfracombe? good job that one wasn't on my Places to Visit list.

There is no raw sewage pumped into the sea anymore, it is treated sewage. (Doing my PR bit, don't want DH to lose his job Grin)
