to be disappointed that royal baby is a boy

Madmum24 · 22/07/2013 22:48

I know IABU, baby is healthy etc, but for some reason I really thought it would be a girl.

I don't know what has got into me, I am certainly not a royalist but I have been so interested in the birth.

Holly if we hadnt' mucked about a bit with 1000 years of tradition, we would be living under an absolute monarchy, or more likely, no monarchy. Times change. The only way the Royals have survived for as long as they have is because when people get fed up of them enough to want to chuck them out, they change.

kungfupannda · 23/07/2013 08:48

I think it would have been interesting if the baby had been a girl, just because all the coverage would have been focussing on the historic aspect.

But it's a lovely, healthy boy and that's great too. I haven't particularly been following the story, but I saw a picture on Facebook of William holding the baby and beaming all over his face, and I did get a bit of a lump in my throat. Hope they got to enjoy the first few hours of just being new parents, like anyone else, before all the insanity kicks off.

FannyMcNally · 23/07/2013 08:53

Have any photos been released yet? I've seen a spoof of William holding his 'son' but it was an old picture of him holding someone else's!

CloudsAndTrees · 23/07/2013 08:54

Horrible thread.

What's wrong with there being three Kings in a row? I think it will be nice. I'm all for the queen, but she's been around for ages.

Hazelbrowneyes · 23/07/2013 08:55

kungfu You've seen a pic of William holding the baby on facebook. Where was the photo taken? Are you sure it's a real photo and not a mock up? Or an old photo of him with a baby? I wouldn't have thought any photos would have been released yet.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 23/07/2013 08:57

And for those who say they are disappointed that there will be three kings, you are aware aren't you that it's likely you will be dead by the time this one gets to be king if we haven't had a republic by then

ThisReallyIsNotSPNopeNotAtAll · 23/07/2013 09:05

The FB pic isn't real. I've seen it.

We currently have a Queen so whats the problem? I honestly dont care tbh. When Harry is in charge then I might take an interest Grin

"What's wrong with there being three Kings in a row? I think it will be nice. I'm all for the queen, but she's been around for ages."

Nothing. Except the message it sends that boys are more important than girls. And we wouldn't want to do that now, would we? Grin

Why does it send that message out curlew?
I don't get it.

GoodTouchBadTouch · 23/07/2013 09:15

"What's wrong with there being three Kings in a row? I think it will be nice. I'm all for the queen, but she's been around for ages."

Agree clouds. The fact that people feel they ought to say they are disappointed with a prince really shows how far the fems have come.

I reckon everyone secretly wants a boy first.

Madmum24 · 23/07/2013 09:15

OP again here! Interesting to hear others opinions too. Just to again clarify that my split second disappointment had nothing to do with girls are better/pink diamonte crowns although that might be nice/boys are boring it was due to the changes. There was no pearl clutching, taking to my bed with consumption, or hair tearing.

Waiting in earnest for the name.

OP posts:
curlew · 23/07/2013 09:15

Eh? "You can be heir to the throne but only until a boy comes along?" And that doesn't say that boys are more important than girls?

ThisReallyIsNotSPNopeNotAtAll · 23/07/2013 09:16

Curlew How does is send that message? Doesn't it just send the message that William had a boy?

Dont get it at all. Its not like there has never been a Queen. If it was all Kings then fair enough but there is currently a queen!

curlew · 23/07/2013 09:17

Jesus wept. Posts like this show that feminism has barely scratched the surface!

northernlurker · 23/07/2013 09:18

The future three kings don't send out a message that boys are more important than girls at all. They send out the message that the eldest child is the one that inherits. Two eldest children happened to be sons and have a son of their own. If Baby Cambridge had been a girl she would be the heir as the oldest child and none of that says anything about one sex being better than the other.
125 years of the last 176 have featured female rule. The difference is that was 'by accident of birth' rather than design and that's changed now.
Which is why to be 'disappointed' over this baby is so deeply unpleasant. Gender disappointment over the sex of your own child is a complex thing that requires understanding. Being disappointed over somebody else's baby is just rude.

LadyBryan · 23/07/2013 09:18

Couldn't care less whether we have three Kings in a row.

There are plenty, PLENTY of fabulous female role models in every walk of life that are there by their own hard work and achievement, rather than an accident of birth.

I don't think in a country where we have a long history of successful, strong female monarchs that we need to worry actually.

shadeofme · 23/07/2013 09:21

Boys are dull.

Their clothes are dull - Shorts, trousers, tops - done. Yawn.
Their names are dull (just check out the baby names for yet another 'help me find a nice boys name that isn't overused' thread) Yawn.
Their hobbies are dull - minecraft, endless sports tournaments (either watching or attending) Yawn.

I reckon everyone secretly wants a boy first

Hmm

No.

FannyMcNally · 23/07/2013 09:34

I'd love to know the reasoning behind everybody apparently secretly wanting a boy first. A friend said she didn't mind what she had but was 'relieved' when it was a boy for her 'husband's sake'.

Something somewhere is ingrained in the psyche of some people. Boys best/first/carry on the 'name'. A first born female inheriting the throne might have triggered some sanity in this area.

curlew · 23/07/2013 09:35

"There are plenty, PLENTY of fabulous female role models in every walk of life that are there by their own hard work and achievement, rather than an accident of birth. "

I agree. But list me some the average 12 year old has heard of!

Jessica Ennis

NobodyPutsTomArcherInTheCorner · 23/07/2013 09:39

'I reckon everyone secretly wants a boy first.' Hmm

I reckon everyone just wants a healthy baby.

FannyMcNally · 23/07/2013 09:39

But why should women only get somewhere by hard work and achievement when men can get somewhere by accident of birth?

Now, it's fair. It wasn't before.

ICBINEG · 23/07/2013 09:40

ha like a princess is a good female role model NOT.

I am slightly happier that it is a boy...the princess meme needs NO encouragement whatsoever in this country.
