Bloody hell, mine pays the electricity, the gas, the water etc. no way could I afford to save it.

HappyMummyOfOne · 11/07/2013 17:49

Morethan, not bitter in the slightest. I'd just rather taxes go to schools or cancer care than buy somebody a house when they are quite capable of working to purchase things if they chose.

audrina

That's me

Except, internship is finished & degree is over!

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 17:53

Hello other Kate. Brilliant news Grin

Abra1d · 11/07/2013 17:53

You don't have to declare the amount of savings--just the income, ie, interest from the savings.

ChestyNut · 11/07/2013 17:54

Noooo don't do that!

Buy a goat.

With those savings you could get two.

I quite like Glenda and Billie?

Happy

What part of WORKING tax credit don't you understand. You have to be working to get tax credits.
Who do you propose I'd have left my children with, to go out to work.
There was no subsidised childcare, in fact no child care at all.
Then as childcare became available it would have been more than what I could earn, hardly good financial management there. Grin
I find you so narrow minded, not everybody lives like you, nor is in the same position as you.

JakeBullet · 11/07/2013 18:02

Then again did the OP save her Tax Credt money? Or did she save other money while living from the tax credits?

Amazing anyhow, because no way could I afford to do this.

Personally I don't think you should claim if you can afford not to. I was entitled to a smallish amount HB while in work. I didn't claim it as I could quite easily manage my rent due to it being just myself and DS here.

Then again....we are each different and what suits one does not suit another. If you can save the tax credit then IMHO you don't need it but it is up to you.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 11/07/2013 18:16

To be fair, smoking 20 a day for 15 months would cost knocking on for 5k. How much is a pack nowadays, £7-8?

twofingerstoGideon · 11/07/2013 18:21

Isn't it the case that child support payments are disregarded for the purposes of tax credit claims? I know they used to be. So, if OP is living at home/off Bank of Mum and Dad largely and working/receiving tax credits and receiving money from her DC's father, she would be much, much, much better off than, say, me (works/sole breadwinner/pays mortgage/utilities/receives no child support). If I was getting, say, £400/month from the high-earning father of my DC, that would make the difference between living on a financial knife-edge and being able to save a considerable amount of money every year.

KateSpade · 11/07/2013 18:39

Thank you! :)

raisah · 11/07/2013 18:48

Well I suppose with the government chasing companies like Amazon & Starbucks to pay their taxes there is more money for people like the op to spend on a nose job.

I personally would put the money in savings accounts for my children but that's me.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/07/2013 19:08

jake

I see your point, but need is open to interpretation.
In our case when we moved into our first house we could have taken out loans to pay for double glazing, central heating, a reliable good second hand car, needed for work etc. New furniture, the list is endless. But we chose the cheaper option so as not to get into debt. In fact the only debt we had was our mortgage. Tax credits would have soon been used up paying for that lot, but we chose to save them. So yes we did need them and so does everybody else who is entitled to them.
For us it made good sense to save as you never know what's round the corner and what you may need the money for.
The house we have now is only equivalent to what we would have received from a pension on retirement. We could have risked putting it in a plan but whilst growing up were aware of so many companies going bust and people losing it all, this just made more sense. It wasn't intentionally saved for a house, more of a rainy day fund. When it started to receive little interest, we found we had enough for a small house.
We could have been dishonest and put it in one of our adult dcs name, to avoid tax in any future sale, several people advised us to do this but we haven't.

frissonpink · 11/07/2013 19:09

They also pay for music and dancing lessons for my dd.
What is your problem with people managing their money. My dc have never gone without anything they needed, just didn't buy luxuries and lived a very frugal life.

Jeez. Your idea of frugal and mine are two totally different concepts.

Music and dancing lessons are luxuries.

WTC are to help with food and basic living costs. They just about help us to survive. That's what they're for.

The fact that you were able to use yours for music and dancing lessons pisses me off quite frankly!!!

morethanpotatoprints · 11/07/2013 19:18

Frisson

Do read the posts.
My dd is 9 my other dc are all grown up now and we are in a different position now than we were 15 - 20 years ago.
Yes of course music and dancing lessons are luxuries, my 2 ds weren't into stuff like that, they played on the field it was free, they rode their bikes.
We live in a town now, very near a supermarket and I am ashamed at how much it costs to live now we aren't in the countryside. The only thing which is cheaper is car fuel as you don't have to drive so far to get anywhere.

ICBINEG · 11/07/2013 19:58

hecsy there are things I don't particularly like that I could fix....but I know it wouldn't make me any happier so why burn the dosh? I lost 4 stone in the last year by finally realising that 'because I hate myself' is not a reason that gets anything done. 'Because I am worth more than an early grave' is more useful.... of course how you get from one to the other is the mystery of the piece....

but essentially most people who think they would be happier with a different nose are in for an expensive nasty surprise.

JakeBullet · 11/07/2013 20:06

I suppose it's down to the ndividual. My tax credits are my major income as I care for DS who is autistic, there is nothing left.on the other hand if DS was NT and I was able to work then the fact it is just me and DS might mean I could save.

In fact I hadn't considered things like smoking etc. I don't smoke so in fact in work I might be quite well off.

My best friend who has ongoing mental health issues due a horrific childhood will generally spend some money playing online bingo. Depending in how she feels it can be a fair amount Sad she can't work due to severe agoraphobia and frequent paralysing panic attacks.

On balance I suppose it is up to the individual. Did the OP come back to join the discussion .

JakeBullet · 11/07/2013 20:09

Ah...read through the thread now.....a journalist looking for comments methinks.

Given some of her previous posts think she needs watching.

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 20:11

She might have had a bit of a nose, Jake, but hasn't posted, no.

DocMarten · 11/07/2013 22:28

lol at 'had a bit of a nose' Grin

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 12/07/2013 08:46

I know. But the difference is that you know it wouldn't change your life. They feel it would.

Anyway, since the OP never came back and has form for a certain type of thread, I don't even know why I'm bothering to think that they're a genuine person who is so unhappy with an aspect of themselves that they're just desperate to change it because they've convinced themselves that their life would be different and somehow happier and better.

ICBINEG · 12/07/2013 10:19

yes that's true...if it were a real person I would try an convince them to spend the 5K on counselling to build up their self-esteem....

trice · 12/07/2013 10:22

I wouldn't ever choose to have elective surgery myself. But if it is your choice, then spend your money however you like.

CissyMeldrum · 12/07/2013 10:49

So you don't really NEED the money.
