To think you shouldn't sit smoke pot at a crowded family event?

Village fair type event with music and shows. Advertised as a family event. Lots of people sat on the grass knee to knee because it is sooo busy. Children EVERYWHERE. And then someone lights up and starts smoking their pot in the middle of everyone.

AIBU to think that isn't on?

YANBU

maddy68 · 06/07/2013 16:51

I wouldnt worry - kids wouldnt realise what it was its just a cigarette to them

McNewPants2013 · 06/07/2013 16:51

yanbu.

snickers251 · 06/07/2013 17:00

I remember my dad calling them his Indonesian fags

His time spent in Indonesia = prison

Whilst it doesn't bother me the slightest if people want to smoke it but agree not around the kids

mercury7 · 06/07/2013 17:43

Amy, do you object because cannabis is not legal or is it the use of an intoxicant at such an event?
If cannabis were legal would you feel differently?

MadCap · 06/07/2013 17:53

Yanbu, people shouldn't smoking anything at a crowed event where there's lot of children running about. It's unsafe and unsociable.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 06/07/2013 17:56

I object to the fact that they were basically forcing it on everyone in the vicinity, including children and babies. Fwiw, the cigarette smokers annoyed me too but I find the thought of breathing in pot more upsetting. I don't know why though, maybe its just the thought or fear that its extra dangerous for dd to be breathing in or something.

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 06/07/2013 18:00

Cigarette smoke is probably more dangerous, weed doesn't have all the nasty toxins and carginogens tobacco has.

YouTheCat · 06/07/2013 18:01

It's illegal and so they shouldn't be doing it anyway.

As to the smoking normal cigarettes, also not on at a crowded family venue and I say that as a smoker - a considerate one.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 06/07/2013 18:05

I worry more about it somehow affecting dd in terms of being stoned lol. I'm sure it doesn't have too much effect breathing it in second hand like that but I don't like the idea of someone else affecting my dd's mental state if that makes sense? I think that's why it bothers me that bit more.

Dackyduddles · 06/07/2013 18:06

I would be upset too. Were it legal I would be less bothered. I realise its used by some for pain relief, I'm just not convinced in this situation that's likely. It's not really the time/place I think.

sundanceclaire · 06/07/2013 18:09

What OldLady said. I wouldn't want a cigarette near me but spliff smoke doesn't smell anywhere near as bad. I would just move out of any smokers way if I was with the DC

morethanpotatoprints · 06/07/2013 18:13

I think your dc would have to smoke a lot of it over a long time to get any detrimental mental effects from it.
Unless the people smoking it were smoking it neat then the tobacco wouldn't have been fantastic for those in close proximity.
It isn't illegal btw, but agree I would go to an area not used by the kids.
The police can always pressure you as well so you need to be really brave to smoke it in public.
In our town you only need to walk passed Starbucks outside seating area to get a whiff, and out town park is full of pot smokers, you can smell it in the surrounding streets.
It is all about you, only difference is in summer people smoke it out doors.

mercury7 · 06/07/2013 18:15

I cant see that the concentration of second hand smoke outdoors from one smoker is likely to be anywhere near high enough to affect anyones mental state.
But given the legal status of cannabis it seems impolite to do it in company where some might have strong feelings about it.

I dont smoke it but if I did I think I'd want to be more discrete about it

Xiaoxiong · 06/07/2013 18:25

I would be more worried about ash and burns if someone was smoking at a very crowded family event. DS has nearly had cigarette ash in the eye when someone smoking has suddenly held it down low at toddler eye level and flicked when in the street.

I find the smell of both pot and cigarettes absolutely foul and if you're very close and can't get away easily (eg you're picnicking on a blanket, someone lights up a few feet away) it clings to your hair and clothes so I would be pretty annoyed on that count too. Wouldn't worry much about getting high via second hand smoke outdoors though.

SoldAtAuction · 06/07/2013 18:30

I use pot for pain relief, but I wouldn't do it around kids, it just isn't good manners. They could have gone for a walk away from the crowd, had their spliff, then gone back, its not hard to do.

pleiadianpony · 06/07/2013 18:39

I haven't got anything against people smoking weed now and again, i just think that there is a time and a place. The time and place is obvs not when there are people around who would be offended by it. It is illegal after all. YABU to get het up about it. It's not worth it. They are just a bit sad and rude to light up a bifta at a village fayre. If you were at a festival then YABVU.

mercury7 · 06/07/2013 18:39

perhaps it's just a bit rude & show off-y to do it in public?
Kind of, 'look at me, I'm so brazen and defiant' ? Hmm

morethanpotatoprints · 06/07/2013 18:43

Please listen.

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL.

If you take it to a place where there aren't so many dc then surely its safe enough. There is no better time nor place than a fair, festival etc.
You do need to mind the rubies though far more than a cig without weed.

suburbophobe · 06/07/2013 18:44

Bit ridiculous to ban all cigarettes outside because there are kids around.
Probably choking with cars around there and all those exhaust fumes.... Should ban them too then.

As for the marijuana, I couldn't care less if people light up. That's their business.

Iamsparklyknickers · 06/07/2013 18:45

Weed doesn't have any carcinogens or nasty toxins Hmm

Washington University Study

For what it's worth, I don't give a tuppence about weed, if forced I think it's reasonable to legalise and control it (although I would cite intoxication as a reason to be cautious about weed over tobacco). But let's not overlook the facts to justify a position.

If you're burning it, you're producing carcinogens. I've seen reports about flame grilled and barbecued food.

OP YANBU, it's anti-social to force people to sit in your smoke when there's always the option to walk away somewhere quieter and get your fix. It's not hard.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 06/07/2013 18:45

Its good to know that it wouldnt have affected dd stoned wise! Its just disappointing to have to put up with breathing in smoke from drugs at an event that was supposed to be family friendly. I wish more people would be considerate and just wander off for a bit, smoke it and come back to the bit where people are watching the entertainment.

OP posts:
AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 06/07/2013 18:47

Oh and LOL at the old car exhaust fumes line being trotted out. I wondered if that one would appear.
