... to think that people should check Snopes before they post rubbish chain stories on Facebook?

Just that really. Fed up of my newsfeed being full of warnings about business cards being laced with burundanga etc.

OP posts:
faeriefruitcake · 12/06/2013 10:46

It should be compulsory Smile

minouminou · 12/06/2013 10:54

Do. Not. Start. Me. Off.

Lifeisontheup · 12/06/2013 10:58

They should be fined if they don't. Fed up of shit first aid advice and the lovely scaremongering stories. I check them out myself and then post the link. Makes me feel better.Smile

minouminou · 12/06/2013 11:00

That "how to survive a heart attack if you're on your own".....
GhaaaaaaaGgghhhbbhgghhhbb!!!

peppersaunt · 12/06/2013 11:00

Even with reference to Snopes cousin had a hard time believing "Friend of friend of cleaner found shivering puppy in the rain took it home discovered it was a rat" story was urban myth.

HibiscusIsland · 12/06/2013 11:02

Agreed. The worst are the ones about abductions or attempted abductions that never happened. There was one about an abductor dyeing the child's hair in the Asda toilets before abducting them to avoid detection. Hmm

minouminou · 12/06/2013 11:03

I think the hard of thinking are generally allergic to Snopes.
Seen this a lot recently.

WentOnABearHunt · 12/06/2013 11:06

I always wonder why people believe half the stuff they read unquestioningly. And if I get told the story where by a friend of a friends child stole a penguin from a zoo and smuggled it home in a backpack and then put it in the bath! GAH!!!!

YippeeKiYayMakkaPakka · 12/06/2013 11:08

Oh, is that one not true then Went? [disappointed]

exexpat · 12/06/2013 11:08

I do the passive-aggressive posting of a Snopes or Hoaxbuster link on crap links, and hide repeat offenders from my timeline (mostly relatives so can't unfriend). What I hate most are the pictures of seriously ill children with claims that if you like or share the picture, facebook will donate money. Aaaargh. Why do people fall for these things?

SpooMoo · 12/06/2013 11:10

Yanbu - I replied to someone saying this with a link to the relevant Snopes page and he deleted the original post, thankfully. Some people use FB as if it's their personal webpage in 1999. Filter yourselves please!

Wallison · 12/06/2013 11:11

Oh God, those pictures of kids are the worst. It's such an intrusive thing to do, to plaster a photo of an ill child all over the internet. I always tell people in no uncertain terms that they shouldn't be sharing the image - makes me look po-faced maybe but I don't care.

I wonder if you knew that onions become POISONOUS if you cut them in half and keep them for several days. Please post this as your FB status to prevent someone you love from dying from onion poisoning.

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/06/2013 11:13

I just ignore and hide the poster. My fb is empty Grin

Buzzardbird · 12/06/2013 11:16

I always let the posters know it is a hoax and post snopes or hoax-slayer information and then I report the post.

I always find when I go back to the post it is gone.

I hope that it makes people check before they encourage this bollocks.

Have done the perfume/poison one just this morning.

minouminou · 12/06/2013 11:17

Trouble is, my worst offenders are two of my dearest chums.
Thankfully, one

minouminou · 12/06/2013 11:19

....of them seems to take it on board when you point out her error.
The other thinks I'm a crypto/fascist-establishment-government drone with a closed mind and all that.

plainjaney · 12/06/2013 11:19

I deleted my BIL for this (well this and the fact that he is also a thick as pigshit racist) but he's still friends with my DD. She showed me one of his posts the other day where he was 'warning friends' about the gang who leave car seats in the road so that women stop and they are then raped and murdered.

Someone actually commented that they were 'discusted' (sic) that the Police were doing nothing about this, and as soon as they catch one gang member another one replaces them.

I mean really? Are you THAT stupid?

minouminou · 12/06/2013 11:22

As if the police are doing nothing about rapes and murders! Thick as two short bloody planks.

AThingInYourLife · 12/06/2013 11:24

YABU

VU in fact

No fucker should be passing that shit on, Snopes checked or not.

ghayes · 12/06/2013 11:56

What about the one about someone feeling a prick when they sit down in the cinema and finding a syringe stuck in the seat with a note attached to it saying "you have just been infected with AIDS". Think I've heard that from at least a dozen people.

And the one about gangs flashing car lights and killing the person who flashes back as an "initiation".

MaxPepsi · 12/06/2013 12:01

The latest one i've seen is the harvesting of Kidneys from live donors after they've been knocked out by ether and then leaving them in a bath of ice to come with a phone and number to call!
It's medical students doing it doncha ya know!

exexpat · 12/06/2013 12:03

ghayes and maxpepsi - those ones have all been doing the rounds for decades. It's hard to believe there's anyone around who can still believe them. Or maybe there is just a new sucker born every minute...

BegoniaBampot · 12/06/2013 12:10

What's with all the posts recently of photos of kids claiming they think they are ugly so you have to 'like' the post? Had two in the past week alone of a very freckled girl and a little girl with DS. Also had one with a photo of a very ill baby where you could create prayers by liking or commenting on the post - who creates these? Is it a joke or someone having a bet to see how viral they can get a link etc. is it some underhand anarchy thing to clog the Internet?

plainjaney · 12/06/2013 12:13

BegoniaBampot thats known as 'Like Farming'. It seems to have slowed down from what it was but this link explains it all:
