... to think that people should check Snopes before they post rubbish chain stories on Facebook?

Just that really. Fed up of my newsfeed being full of warnings about business cards being laced with burundanga etc.

It doesn't stand for anything fortified, it is a website that pisses on urban legends that some stupid people believe are true.

www.snopes.com/

mmmerangue · 12/06/2013 14:13

snopes.com is a site that debunks urban myths.

From Disney putting cocks in A little Mermaid to gypsies stealing dogs to Margerine giving you cancer.

exexpat · 12/06/2013 14:14

Hoax slayer is good too.

plainjaney · 12/06/2013 16:10

Slightly OT but lest we forget the old "I'm moving to Paris for a month!" nonsense.
How in hells name does that raise awareness of Breast Cancer?

exexpat · 12/06/2013 16:32

And the underwear colour and where you put your handbag ones... Equally irrelevant to breast cancer.

Sallyingforth · 12/06/2013 16:48

and better still if whinging ABOUT FB was limited to whinging ON facebook
Yes!
If you really have to use FB then you will just have to put up with the crap on there. You won't change it by complaining somewhere else, so please don't spread its rubbish onto MN or anywhere else for that matter.

HibiscusIsland · 12/06/2013 18:05

To be fair the OP did write the complaint about FB in her thread title and it isn't obligatory to open and read all threads on MNet. Are you sure you don't secretly enjoy reading FB complaint threads? Grin Wink

StuntGirl · 12/06/2013 18:16

I direct them towards snopes. If they are still adamant that its true, or they post some bullshit again then they get defriended. Some people are just too stupid to use the internet.

spatchcock · 12/06/2013 18:18

Sallying If you really think FB is that dreadful why would you open this thread? Just to show how superior you are for not using FB?!

Sallyingforth · 12/06/2013 21:43

I agreed wholeheartedly with the earlier poster who posted this because it seems so pointless to complain about Facebook on another site like MN where it cannot possibly change anything. The only way to deal with a FB problem is on FB - or by avoiding it.
There are so many posts like this, by people who whinge about FB but still persist in using it. I don't often open them because they all follow the same boring theme. This one was rather different though because the chain stories often appear in spam email as well as on FB.

FatimaLovesBread · 12/06/2013 21:49

A friend shared one today that is a copy of a letter warning about the gangs driving with no headlights and to not flash at them or you'll be killed.
Even if she thought it was true the "letter" has a South African address on it, she lives in rural Yorkshire

Oldraver · 12/06/2013 22:44

My niece and BIL posted the 'paint on gates, knicking dogs' one. I pointed out they needed to look out for the yellow paint.... they asked what that was for and I tolf them ..here lives a guillable person

Wallison · 12/06/2013 23:01

Sallying, I was venting rather than looking to change anything. And my complaint isn't with FB but with some of the people I know who post on there, ie it's about something that people do that winds me up, which I would say is a definition that covers most of AIBU.

MrsCosmopilite · 12/06/2013 23:04

Urgh. I always advise the poster that the thing is a hoax, and support it with a link to the hoaxslayer/snopes link.

I tend to hide repeat offenders.

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/06/2013 23:18

The only one I ever Like or Share is the stroke awareness one that pops up from time to time. It's sound advice and as strokes run in my family I see it as kind of an insurance policy Grin.

Small plug here: www.stroke.org.uk/about/recognise-symptoms just in case.

Everything else gets a Snopes link or ignored.

aldiwhore · 12/06/2013 23:22

YANBU. I learned this the hard way (by making an utter twat of myself).

aldiwhore · 12/06/2013 23:24

Should add, I was VERY grateful to the friend that posted the snopes link, not grateful to the people who simply wrote "bollocks".

So PLEASE, post the link to the ignorant, a few will be enlightened. (The more links the merrier).

mmmerangue · 12/06/2013 23:25

Fatima, a friend of mine shared the same hoax but it was about Bloods (US gang) and from a US police dept. Hmm

She even said that it was 'on snopes so could be true' and I had to point out to her that snopes had a big red FALSE at the top of the article. As well as stories of this hoax going back to the 80's. I mean really...
