... to think that people should check Snopes before they post rubbish chain stories on Facebook?

Just that really. Fed up of my newsfeed being full of warnings about business cards being laced with burundanga etc.

OP posts:
exexpat · 12/06/2013 12:14

Begonia - no, it's just a cynical money-making ploy - likes/shares = profits on facebook. Why 'Liking' Facebook virals makes scammers rich

TheOneAndOnlyAllan · 12/06/2013 12:15

Those pages that you are supposed to like with a picture or easy puzzle are quite likely just collecting likes. The page can then be sold to a business, complete with all its likes, who change the contents and then it will reappear in your friends' feed, liked by you, with some kind of dodgy contents. See for example my cousin who found that she'd "liked" a picture of a girl in a thong with "I can't believe she did THAT" and inviting you to click on the link.

BegoniaBampot · 12/06/2013 12:27

Thanks, they just drive me mad. Especially the 'you only have a heart or a re a good person' if you like, comment or do as you are told like a total sap!

jaggythistle · 12/06/2013 12:41

YANBU at all. I also go about posting Snopes links.

Some managers at work are dumb enough to forward theirs on to 'All Users' at work. It makes me cringe.

sudointellectual · 12/06/2013 12:51

It's embarrassing. I feel embarrassed for them. They look like credulous fools. It's nearly as bad as the people on Money Box who call in about how they lost twenty thousand pounds buying recovered swamp land on Dagobah or speculating on unicorn futures. Cringe.

I do sometimes post Snopes links, if I particularly like the person, but mainly I just hide the post and downgrade the updates I get from them.

MonstrousPippin · 12/06/2013 13:11

My cousin recently posted something like "drinking water from a plastic bottle gives you breast cancer".

If it's a close friend or family member I try and be nice by posting the snopes link and saying something like "Phew! Looks like we're safe. What a relief!"

If it's my DP, I just tell him he's a fucking idiot. Since we've been together though, he seems to have learnt not to believe everything he reads on the internet. He was a great believer in the KFC myth *sigh

DialsMavis · 12/06/2013 13:24

I fell for one the other day. The one about Heineken sponsering dog fighting in Asia. in my defence: I was idling FBing on my phone so just shared without checking and the friend who posted it is not normally gulible herself. Blush

Fuzzysnout · 12/06/2013 13:28

MonstrousPippin - seriously? Your DP really believed that KFC cook fresh on the bone chicken from scratch every day? Grin

ihavenonameonhere · 12/06/2013 13:31

Yep I always link to snopes. It's always the same few ppl on my Facebook too.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 12/06/2013 13:32

I don't understand why anyone over 20 'does' Facebook... it would save an awful lot of angst if they didn't :)

mmmerangue · 12/06/2013 13:35

Yup I have sent snopes links to people unashamedly.

If they are happy to look like idiots, I am happy to look like a clever clogs Wink

HibiscusIsland · 12/06/2013 13:35

People do FB to see what their friends /family are up to and communicate with them.

Cooroo · 12/06/2013 13:36

YANBU, absolutely. Dog owners are very prone to this - there's one about people putting stickers on gates ... OMG! I just googled this and the Daily Fail are reporting it as fact TODAY.

That would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

WiredOnCoffee - I'm over 50 and I love FB. Most of my friends DON'T post this sort of crap, we chat about Game of Thrones, argue about religion and politics, and occasionally share cute pictures of cats... what's not to like?

LulaPalooza · 12/06/2013 13:40

YANBU in the slightest... It infuriates me when people share these stupid hoaxes without checking. I ahve even seen lawyer friends share the one about FB stealing your intellectual property.

Also...
I hate it when people share like farming pics. The ones of sick ro disabled children are despicable.

I hate it when people post "inspirational" quotes

I am massively jealous of people posting holiday pics from fabulous places

I am tired of "funny" cats and dogs (except Text From Dog. That's awesome)

I am sad when people post pics of babies and kids (TTC hell)

I really should just close my FB account, shouldn't I?!

AKissIsNotAContract · 12/06/2013 13:40

I've posted snopes links before and had comments saying 'oh well still good to make people aware' Hmm or people who don't read the snopes link and carry on sharing.

BegoniaBampot · 12/06/2013 13:45

Chipping - I don't understand that people can't have the imagination to see that FB can be more than 15 yr olds printing dubious duck face photos for their mates. FB can be a great way for families and friends spread throughout the world to casually and inexpensively keep in touch and share news and photos that mean that the whole family or group of friends is included and can share the news and talk to each other. Maybe we should just go back to writing letters than used to take weeks to get to the other side of the world - or maybe we can use FB.

spatchcock · 12/06/2013 13:53

A few weeks ago I posted a Snopes link in response to MIL's post that 'the holocaust is no longer being taught in schools' and got the reply 'it's absolutely true - Carol's son's neighbour's sister is a teacher and confirmed it.' Hmm

I agree with the poster upthread who said that the hard of thinking are allergic to Snopes.

IControlSandwichMonkey · 12/06/2013 13:55

My friend's posted one just this morning about an unmarked police car containing a rapist and something to do with dialling 112 and the police turning up and how unmarked police cars are the devil and somebody shaved her head in Sainsbo's toilet and drugged her and stole her kidney and something else to do with Neil Armstrong. It's all running together a bit now.

lukeiamyourmother · 12/06/2013 13:58

Personally I hate the 'Its xxx Cancer week so pass this status on'

Or, if you care that much, donate some fucking money instead.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 12/06/2013 14:02

cooroo - so much, so very much Grin Somedays there are more threads (on MN) about what such & such has said or done on facebook to upset someone, than about anything else... so much hassle!

It would be FAB if you could control the complete and utter bullshit that gets posted Grin

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 12/06/2013 14:05

... and better still if whinging ABOUT FB was limited to whinging ON facebook Grin

No offence OP :)

TheDeadlyDonkey · 12/06/2013 14:06

People like a drama.
My dc school playground was swarming with mothers not long ago, as police (real police apparently) were reporting through FB (as they do Hmm) about that gang of murderers leaving a car seat in the road.
I pointed out that it was a hoax, and gently directed them in the direction of snopes.
The disappointment on their faces! I think they would prefer there to be a Gand of murdering rapists on the loose, as it gave them something to gossip about.

Oh, and the needle infected with HIV? It really happened in a nightclub in my local town. My neighbour's son's girlfriend's dad's dog's sister was there at the time, and was told by the bouncer's llama that it was true. So there Wink

fortifiedwithtea · 12/06/2013 14:08

I don't have a FB account. Can someone explain what snopes stands for?

exexpat · 12/06/2013 14:11

Snopes is a longstanding website that debunks urban myths, scams etc. It is not connected to facebook, but comes in very handy for pointing out that people are posting complete crap.

SacreBlue · 12/06/2013 14:12

My view is that if you have access to fb you have access to google and/or snopes. Once duped is acceptable but twice or fecking continually is not.

YANBU - grinds my gears - and most repeat offenders are unfriended and blocked.
