To ban kissing my baby on the lips

I'm not sure if I'm the only person in the world who has this view but I hate when other people kiss my baby on the lips. My MIL is the main culprit and it makes my skin crawl. I won't deny that we don't get on, so that exasperates the issue, but it's not just a hello/goodbye kiss, she picks bet up and just slobbers all over her face. DD is only 6 months old but has started cringing, I'm sure she doesn't like it, she doesn't laugh. The MIL also smokes and although I won't allow DD near when she's actually smoking her breath constantly stinks of smoke. How do I approach this situation? My husband and I show DD affection all the time, so she's not lacking in love. I just feel she doesn't treat DD as a person with a right to her own personal space she just treats her like a doll who's just there for her to pull and poke.

Disclaimer-my two are 13 and 11. memories of the baby stage are hazy at best.

BigBoobiedBertha · 09/06/2013 20:54

I've seen what comes out of a baby's bottom, several times a day.

Raspberries on the arms, stomach, legs, neck face, or anywhere really apart from the bum. There is nothing lovely about raspberries on the bum although I can see why you wouldn't want to then kiss a baby on the lips after that.

Oh lord I am officially a weirdo.

crashdoll · 09/06/2013 21:01

I know lots of adults who peck on the lips with close relatives. I don't think it's weird nor sexual.

Thurlow · 09/06/2013 21:01

Exactly. It's a peck, not a snog.

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 21:02

I doubt I did it mid explosive bum change or 15 times a day Bertha. Probably when drying them after a bath or something.

I'm still wondering, when granny is banned from kissing, what the next ban is going to be.

Thurlow · 09/06/2013 21:08

Oh, sparkling, you didn't see your DC naked, did you? Sad

HabitualLurker · 09/06/2013 21:11

I still kiss my mum on the lips. And my Dad. And my brother. And my MIL and FIL. And I'm over the age of 33. Freeeaak.

Actually, come to think of it I don't think I've kissed my 8 mo son on the lips yet. Until recently his mouth was such a small target, and now it's generally covered in slimey drool and/or snot. But if anyone else wants to brave it they're welcome. Not if they have cold sores though, YWNBU on that front.

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 21:12

Thurlow I think i did you know. Shock

Thurlow · 09/06/2013 21:21

Shocking, just shocking. They'll be scarred for life.

As long as they never say you naked, though...

(I thought most people gave close family members a peck on the lips!)

Kiriwawa · 09/06/2013 21:21

I kiss my whole family on the lips - dad, mum, sisters, BILs, kids, the lot. I also kiss my bezzers on the lips.

No one has died of communicable disease. Also I am an ex-smoker and my sister still smokes. Both our children approach us for kisses. Imagine that!

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 21:34

I think they have seen me naked Thurlow but not for a few years now.

IneedAsockamnesty · 09/06/2013 21:45

I kiss my own baby's on the lips but I wouldn't even think about doing it to someone else's.

Of course an easy way to stop it would be next time she does it grab her and kiss her in exactly the same way. When she freaks out just say " she you don't like it do you"

shewhowines · 09/06/2013 22:46

How come so many of us have been infected with cold sores? I can only think for me, it was as a child because I can't remember a time when I didn't suffer.

I assume it was from my parents/people kissing me on the lips.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 09/06/2013 22:56

I am astounded by the number of people who think kissing your baby on the lips is weird. Its a kiss, not a full on snog. I kiss my DC on the lips all the time and its lovely. I do think its something that a parent would do though rather than random people.

I would however not want a smoky grandparent kissing them on the lips, but the kiss itself is completely harmless.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/06/2013 22:58

shewho - it could be from towels, or a shared cup, or touching a parent's sore as a child.

I am really careful when I have coldsores, and I use the patches so that there is less risk of passing them on to one of the boys.

On the other hand, DH has been kissing me on the mouth for almost ten years (except when I have a coldsore!) and hasn't been infected!

snooter · 09/06/2013 23:04

Yuck - I think kissing on the lips is sexual & so limit it to my husband. Well nearly Shock ! would never kiss a child on the lips

pictish · 09/06/2013 23:05

Weirdo. Grin

Vakant · 09/06/2013 23:07

I kiss my toddler on the lips and always have done, there is nothing wrong with it. It's not like I slip in the tongue, she on the other hand....

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 23:08

i am trying to think why I wouldn't kiss a baby/child on the lips. Cold sores/germs hadn't even crossed my mind, or it being 'sexual' Shock

I suppose my thinking is that the baby/child wouldn't like it. Especially a small baby having a big face looming into view and then kissing it's lips.

ballroomblitz · 09/06/2013 23:11

This thread has made me laugh. I kiss dd and ds on the lips and wait for it my mum and dad too and I'm mid thirties. It's a peck fgs no tongues involved Grin

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 09/06/2013 23:14

Blimey.
By the looks of this thread there are going to be quite a lot of anally retentive children/ adults in the future.

Smoking thing I understand - but honestly - the rest is a load of rot.
