to ditch my mooncup because it stinks of rotting dead bodies?

fanjolina · 03/06/2013 10:33

I've tried, I really have tried to get in with the mooncup.

I've got over the ickiness of blood on my hand (and all over the bathroom when it once 'pinged' whilst full).

But my god, by day 5 - the smell!! It seriously stinks like rotting dead bodies. And it's the mooncup itself (I did a sniff test).

Others can smell it too. I was getting weird looks on the bus this morning and at work today people have been commenting on a foul smell.

I swear that apart from the rubber mooncup my vagina is as fresh as a daisy. It's not rotten - but the mooncup is.

So AIBU to ditch it and return to tampons?

I left miune (by accident) for over a day and it did start to smell. Give it a really good sterilise.

Forgot to say I added a bit of lavender oil to it's bag and it smelt beautiful the next month...

valiumredhead · 03/06/2013 15:45

I have used mine for 7 years or there about and am just about to buy a new one as the rubber has started smelling. Never had a smell in the early days so I think the rubber just gets old.

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/06/2013 16:45

For those who are horrified by the thought, it is no more intimate and messy than using tampons! Also, as long as you wash it at least once or twice a day Hmm it doesn't smell at all Grin

Just want to offer these Thanks to the OP, you have accepted that you are the problem most graciously Grin

FryOneFatManic · 03/06/2013 17:32

Okay, up to now I've used tampons, but I'd like to know how to decide which mooncup (or variant, I've seen Melunas and others) is right for me to use. Is there a thread I can visit that answers the FAQs? Tried searching but not sure what to search for.

cronullansw · 03/06/2013 18:07

What century are we in?

IneedAsockamnesty · 03/06/2013 18:12

FryOne,

I'm a bit of a reusable San pro geek and would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Cronullansw why?

SmellsLikeWeenSpirits · 03/06/2013 18:24

This is the thread for me

Mine doesn't smell. But it is discoloured. Heavily. Is this normal?

Sleepyhoglet · 03/06/2013 18:55

I need help with mine. I bought the smaller size, but still find it ridiculously painful to remove!! Do I have an unreasonably small fanjo?! Seriously painful and haven't wanted to revist again since then. Thought I was going to split open. Hey, t
I suppose that's what childbirth feels like....

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 03/06/2013 18:59

Sleepy do you break the suction first? I don't get how it can hurt so much. I pinch the bottom of mine before I take it out.
Are you sure you are sticking it in the right hole? Hmm Grin

TattyDevine · 03/06/2013 19:00

Mine has a rusty tinge to it SLWS Grin

TattyDevine · 03/06/2013 19:01

OP you have to change it when it looks like this Wine or it will smell like this Envy

IneedAsockamnesty · 03/06/2013 19:19

Sleepy try this one

www.femininewear.co.uk/meluna-soft-menstrual-cup-262-p.asp

Its very very soft so very good for people with sensitive vaginas they are also good for those with rubbish pelvic floors

Pumpkinette · 03/06/2013 19:26

Do you have a copper IUD by any chance fanjolina ? I

I have noticed a smell issue with my mooncup since getting my IUD. Well I think it's more a change of smell to the blood rather than the moon cup. I find the smell is worse if I leave it more than 4 hours before changing and more so towards the end of my period.

I'm just guessing the copper has an effect of the smell as I never had any issues with my mooncup before.

OctopusPete8 · 03/06/2013 19:30

I've always found period smell reminds me of raw lamb :S (sorry I've just ruined lamb for everyone)

hot weather won't help.

RosinaCopper · 03/06/2013 19:40

Given that I abandoned my mooncups (tried both sizes) because of it hurting when the rim pops out, I might try a meluna. Thanks for that Smile

DisappointedHorse · 03/06/2013 19:46

This thread has amused me no end! Kudos to your DH OP, mine would pass out if I asked him to sniff my mooncup!

Towards the end of my period when I'm only changing it a couple of times a day I always think it smells like a butcher's shop. The smell doesn't follow me around though.

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/06/2013 19:47

Well this has given me ten minutes of hilarity, thanks all! (grin)

Stellarpunk · 03/06/2013 19:47

Nooooo mooncups are luffly!

I reckon, I've saved over £200 in tampax over the last 7 years. And not added to landfill! Amazing!

To answer someone up thread, mines a bit discoloured now. I boil mine with a little liquid soap before I start using it very month.

But my big problem is capacity. I can easly fill a cup in 2 hours at peak flow. But because they re big, it's actually disguised the fact that I have a serious flow issue. Went to docs and was given a tablet... Some kind of acid... Which I take over two days, three times a day. That seems to have done the trick!

OP, well done for displaying such good grace... You balm pot! :) Flowers

BegoniaBampot · 03/06/2013 20:05

Mooncup newbie after reading about them on mumsnet. They do hurt when removing them but discovered I have to stick my finger up and break the suction which can get a bit messy, anyone else have this problem? Also what do you do if you need to empty it and you have to do it in a public loo or pub loo etc, with bloody and hands and cleaning it? Also, noticed some tiny red blood like splatter stains on my cream shirt and suspect it might actually be splatter from changing - lovely, especially as I was out for dinner. Still not totally convinced it's worth the hassle and splatter stains!

With the meluna if the rim hurts then the soft one is best ( its a bit harder to put in but you will find it gets easy after a few trys) as they do do 3 different squishnesses if anyone can fire ping pong balls across a room then you need the sport one.

Begonia have you tried breaking the suction by pinching the base?

YoniBottsBumgina · 03/06/2013 20:51

Meluna - that's what I've been looking for! Thanks to whoever posted it. Am also petite and starting to find the mooncup uncomfy.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/06/2013 20:57

I fold mine to get it out - there is no way I could get it out just by pulling! Tilting it the side rather than front back helps too so you dont ping your urethra.
