to ditch my mooncup because it stinks of rotting dead bodies?

fanjolina · 03/06/2013 10:33

I've tried, I really have tried to get in with the mooncup.

I've got over the ickiness of blood on my hand (and all over the bathroom when it once 'pinged' whilst full).

But my god, by day 5 - the smell!! It seriously stinks like rotting dead bodies. And it's the mooncup itself (I did a sniff test).

Others can smell it too. I was getting weird looks on the bus this morning and at work today people have been commenting on a foul smell.

I swear that apart from the rubber mooncup my vagina is as fresh as a daisy. It's not rotten - but the mooncup is.

So AIBU to ditch it and return to tampons?

When I go camping I just take a little bottle of water with me to rinse the MC in the toilet, so anyone who has a separate toilet/bathroom could do the same.
Mine had gone brown and no amount of soap or boiling would get rid of the stain. Then I got some Milton and now I've got my vintage mooncup backit's like new again. It was never smelly though!

I love the mooncup. I actually feel cheated that the menopause is looming because I didn't discover the mooncup sooner and needlessly had all those years of horrid pads and tampons.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/06/2013 00:26

you wash it in the dishwasher?

Someone on mumsnet said that they washed their mooncup in the loo when flushed once. I assume she was joking but I am not too sure.

IKnowWhat · 04/06/2013 00:29

If you put a few sheets of loo paper in the toilet before emptying your Mooncup then you don't get the red pool left in the bottom of the bowl after flushing.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/06/2013 00:31

It's not really a big sell

Can get whiffy
Gets stained brown
Blood pooling at bottom of loo
Bloody fingers
Cleaning logistics

fanjolina · 04/06/2013 00:32

3 days??!!! Ok, I don't feel quite so bad now!!

And to the poster that asked, no I don't have a copper coil. I've got a Mirena, which has always worried me a bit with the Mooncup - I'm sure it was on MN where I read a post about a mooncup sucking out a more a coil when removed?!!

For some reason I have in my mind the smell of my grans twin tub washing machine when the rubber seals started to perish Grin

StripeyYogurt · 04/06/2013 00:38

mine would over flow if I left it for more than 3 hours!

aldiwhore · 04/06/2013 01:03

Whether it's a good product or not, if something smells of dead rotting bodies, get rid.

Like anything, it works for some not others. I didn't get past the 3rd HOUR with mine. It's just not for me.

Fortunately these days I don't bleed at all thanks to my Mirena, but I tried the MC, no, not for me.

YANBU.

What if I'm under 30 but had a vag birth? ConfusedGrin

fanjolina · 04/06/2013 08:57

And to all those commenting on what a good sport my H is - oh yes! After he sniffed it he quipped "there is something rotten in the state of mooncup" Grin

badguider · 04/06/2013 10:18

Don't want to be pedantic, but for those who don't know it might be misleading to call it 'rubber' - it is actually made from medical-grade silicone Smile

NoelHeadbands · 04/06/2013 10:31

Sorry Through under 30 but vag birth puts you in the size A gang Grin

DizzyPurple · 04/06/2013 11:20

Just had a look at Meluna site, they come in 9 colours including 2 glittery ones! Never imagined that. I might try a purple one..

FryOneFatManic · 04/06/2013 13:14

I think a glittery one would be a laugh Grin

DD wouldn't be interested in them just yet. She's 13, had periods for a year and so far prefers to use those really thick brick sized pads at the beginning, moving down to the normal pads with wings. She's seen me with tampons and is not yet convinced about them. But they're kept in the bathroom so she can try any time.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 04/06/2013 13:39

Yuk. Well done for being honest though, OP. You have saved a lot of people wasting their money buying one!

IneedAsockamnesty · 04/06/2013 13:43

The glitter is also inside the silicone so does not come off just incase anyone is freaking about having a glitter issue inside there vagina

katykuns · 04/06/2013 15:27

Another one here recommending the Meluna cup. I get the impression its softer and easier to remove. Could be wrong, as haven't tried the mooncup. Got the Meluna originally because it was slightly cheaper. Also got it in the colour black... glitter was sold out Grin

I originally did it because I found tampons uncomfortable and my periods were so heavy that pads needed replacing so regularly. Then I liked it because it saved me so much money... now its because I actually feel really clean and dry, as opposed to having it sat against my skin all day. Sorry if TMI!

ChairmanoftheBored · 04/06/2013 20:05

I agree that it sounds like you might need to have a swab taken for infection. Have you really cleaned it well enough? The tiny holes at the sides can get gunged up, so you can pass a fine needle through them to clean, then boil for a few minutes.
I have not had this problem to be honest and I wear mine for 8 hours or more a day as I have quite a light flow. It amazes me how people seem less disgusted about shoving a bit of cotton wool up your fanny for hours, than using a mooncup!

foreverondiet · 04/06/2013 20:11

Shouldn't smell. I use a milton tablet after every period - leave in disposable cup over night to sterlise and then rinse well. Wash well during period. Would only smell if you don't clean it or if blood exposed to air.

nobodysbaby · 04/06/2013 22:03

I would love to use one but the first time I tried, I got it stuck. Really stuck. Was on the verge of going to the doctor when dh managed to get it out (tmi, soz). What was I doing wrong?

rubyflipper · 04/06/2013 22:14

Can I just state that there is nothing wrong with my pelvic floor! I use the Meluna soft because I have a delicate fanjo Grin.

If you flush as soon as you've emptied your cup, you avoid any blood pooling at the bottom of the loo.

fallon8 · 04/06/2013 22:16

And the point of wearing this thing?

Sparrowlegs248 · 04/06/2013 22:16

Ah, so the have a handle to pull them out? I was somehow imagining grasping hold of a rubbery cup to pull it out and it squishing and blood everywhere and oh dear....i think i'm put off....

thebody · 04/06/2013 22:22

I did a poll amongst my friends, all multiple kids and all over 40.

None if them had heard of or seen a moon cup and to be honest neither have I.

Is this a mumsnet invention? Only joking.

But please for us tampon/pad ladies WHAT THE FUCK IS IT? How does it work? You have to re use it? Come on tell

buswanker · 04/06/2013 22:38

Does anyone know how soon after having a baby you can use them?
