to ditch my mooncup because it stinks of rotting dead bodies?

fanjolina · 03/06/2013 10:33

I've tried, I really have tried to get in with the mooncup.

I've got over the ickiness of blood on my hand (and all over the bathroom when it once 'pinged' whilst full).

But my god, by day 5 - the smell!! It seriously stinks like rotting dead bodies. And it's the mooncup itself (I did a sniff test).

Others can smell it too. I was getting weird looks on the bus this morning and at work today people have been commenting on a foul smell.

I swear that apart from the rubber mooncup my vagina is as fresh as a daisy. It's not rotten - but the mooncup is.

So AIBU to ditch it and return to tampons?

try again

dementedma · 04/06/2013 22:50

I think its a MN thing. Not one of my friends have even heard of it, let alone used it

mummymeister · 04/06/2013 22:55

the only thread I have ever read where I am glad to be having my hot flushes, depression and no periods. sorry but they have always sounded so disgusting a bit like a reusable condom. would try washable pads if it was now an issue for me but as I said above actually loving the menopause at the moment Smile

Cloverer · 04/06/2013 22:55

I've had a mooncup for years and love it! Periods have been less painful than with tampons and much cheaper of course.

I haven't found it messy or difficult to remove once I got the hang of it (have to squeeze it slightly to break the vacuum). Usually only empty it morning and evening at home so don't have to worry about public toilets.

BriansBrain · 04/06/2013 23:01

Half of me wants to try it out and the other half wants to run for the hills screaming

Boomba · 04/06/2013 23:04

demented i dont think it is. Ive had mine for probably 13 years, long before I discovered MN. there used to be little advert stickers on the back of public toilet doors; dont see them any more.

Honestly meister it is way less disgusting than tampons and pads

buswanker I used mine from the first period after having my dcs. With first dc that was 6 months, but i think dc2 was 2 months. Dont know if thre is proper guidance. I imagine its the same as tampons?

Cloverer · 04/06/2013 23:08

I think they are probably only going to suit you if you feel ok about touching your vagina - if you'd rather not/feel uncomfortable about it then it wouldn't work for you. I know some women only like applicator tampons for example because they don't want to touch themselves.

mummymeister · 04/06/2013 23:19

thanks boomba but I will never know as I don't have them any more. would you use a re-usable condom? (setting aside the issue that it probably looks like an expensive shops carrier bag in terms of thickness)

Boomba · 04/06/2013 23:30

hmmm...is there such a thing?

Itshad to say. Its been so long since Ive used a condom. I suppose if it was with the same partner, then maybe

The mooncup though, solved lots of issues for me. Its great for travelling with and avoiding that horrid feeling of when your tampax is long overdue changing, but you havent had the opportunity/have lost them etc.

I used to prefer pads anyway, as I always felt like I was on the verge of toxic shock with tampons. And MC is far far less mess tha pads.

also the disposal issue...your bin doesnt fill up with festering sanitary wear!!

IneedAsockamnesty · 04/06/2013 23:45

You can use them on your first period after having a baby providing you have had your 6 week check up everything's as it should be and the after birth bleeding had stopped before your period started.

The actual mooncup branded cup is available in boots and have been for sometime they are on the shelf with all the other San pro products.

Many other better brands are available online

In RL they are a very popular product but not really something that comes up in conversation.

Ime they make less mess than a tampon and are just as easy to use

menstral cups are a silicone sherry glass shaped product that are designed to be worn internally and used in place of tampons they work by catching the blood. They are inserted lower than a contraceptive cap but not low enough to poke out,you empty them into the loo every few hours or more frequently if needed and give them a quick rinse (a bottle of water is fine for this) and reinsert them when your period has finished they get cleaned and sterilised by fluid or boiling and then stored in a little fabric bag until you next need it.

Obviously they are long term reusable only if looked after. They save a lot of money are better for the environment and have been known to hugely reduce cramps they are also better from a vaginal health perspective than tampons are.

Nope, definitely don't have an infection. It's only on the last days of period that the issue arises and I think the clever (or cleaner!!) mumsnetters have cracked why.

As I said earlier OP, mine stinks too even though I change it every 3- 4 hours. I've had it years and only just started having this problem, it's common apparently if you google. Definitely not an infection as I scrub mine, soak in Milton and put it in the dishwasher and it still stinks of cabbages! It's the rubber. I'm ordering a new one as I can't live without mine, but might try a Meluna this time as it sounds softer.

Guerrillacrochet · 05/06/2013 08:28

PMSL at you and your husband sniffing mooncups and lady parts... that is exactly the kind of thing I'd ask my DH to do. As someone said, that's love right there.Glad the cause has been found! Grin
God I love mumsnet.

Sallystyle · 05/06/2013 08:46

What size Meluna cup would someone want if they have had five children?

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 08:51

And what size if they are 40 and had one c section and previously used the bigger sized moon cup please :)

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 08:51

42

ILikeBirds · 05/06/2013 08:57

Femmecups are half price today.

I'm looking to retire my mooncup so investigating alternatives.

Quodlibet · 05/06/2013 08:59

OP if you have very light flow you could use a smaller cup (they are softer too), I have one called something like Luna? It has a little soft ring for removal and is easier to whip out than the Mooncup and was only about £6 online. I use Mooncup for heavy days and the Luna for the light days at the end (and yes take them out and rinse every 8 hrs max).

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 09:00

Where do you get Femmecups from please?!

ILikeBirds · 05/06/2013 09:06

www.femmecup.com/

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 09:07

Thanks, will order one. Bargain!

Abra1d · 05/06/2013 09:13

Can I ask a slightly tangential question?

I have a colonoscopy next week. It has taken two years (really) to get the date (they originally gave me a date I couldn't make). By some malign fluke I think my period will arrive then. I am perimenopausal and very irregular. Can I wear the mooncup during the colonoscopy? Do I have to cancel?

Abra1d · 05/06/2013 09:21

Don't worry--did some googling and answered own question. :)

ParadiseChick · 05/06/2013 09:33

Any whiff on the cup can be got rid off by leaving the cup in the sun for a day.
