To think that no one should be allowed to wear a sandal without some proper foot grooming?!

It's that time of year again... Ah summer and its long days of sunshine. I so love it but the one thing I fear most in this change of season? The sandalled "foot claw"!

Suddenly everyone is wearing heel, toe and full foot exposed foot-wear. And the exposed foot often is a scary site to behold: yellowed toe nails, bunions, fungus, severely cracked heels, dry skin. I am constantly shocked by how many people so casually don sandals with their feet looking a hot mess. Certainly not for public view.

AIBU to expect people to invest in a little foot grooming in the summer? Have people not heard of a podiatrist or a pedicure?

This is an honest question as the flagrant disregard for foot hygiene drives me nuts.. But I may be the only person who feels this way?!

'So what did Medieval English people's feet look like then OP?'

Much like now, it depended on your income, the number of servants you could employ and the demands your life put on you and your feet.

Talkinpeace · 02/06/2013 21:37

my cousin wore sandals with a missing toe
then again as the melanoma that had started there killed her age 45, grooming was rather irrelevant

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 02/06/2013 21:38

Its polite to have well groomed feet if one is to wear sandals??
If one were to comment on the state of my feet, one would get told to fuck off!

Veryunsure · 02/06/2013 21:39

YNBU OP! A little moisturiser goes a long way, makes you wonder if they care as little about their lady garden Grin shall I now give myself a Biscuit

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 21:40

I actually hate the term "grooming".

Dogs and horses get groomed.

squoosh · 02/06/2013 21:40

I've got a micro-pedi which is like a Black & Decker sander for your trotters. I'm going to become a guerilla foot filer and transform people's ugly feet when they aren't looking.

LEMisdisappointed · 02/06/2013 21:41

See, OP, you are coming across as quite shallow - doesn't that bother you?

freddiefrog · 02/06/2013 21:41

I don't think I've ever been close enough to another persons foot to notice their levels of foot hygiene

I stick a bit of nail polish on, shave my big toes and away I go

LEMisdisappointed · 02/06/2013 21:43

I have one of those pedi things, like an egg shaped cheese grater for feet - my fingernails are actually tingling just thinking about it. The thought of grating my feet just to please people like the OP - yeah, right

LEMisdisappointed · 02/06/2013 21:43

I have a friend who sets light to the hairs on her big toe Hmm

Wallison · 02/06/2013 21:44

Don't people who have diabetes often have hard skin on their feet? Seems a bit mean that diabetic people can't wear sandals.

GoblinGranny · 02/06/2013 21:44

Perhaps if I was being offered mind-blowing sex that involved toes and feet as part of a whole body experience, I might consider it worthwhile.
But just to avoid the OP wrinkling her nose? Hmm
My feet are clean and fully functional. That's enough for me.

FryOneFatManic · 02/06/2013 21:44

I moisturise my feet simply because otherwise the skin gets so dry they catch on the sheets. I also file the nails. Otherwise I keep them clean and wear sandals most of the time, because my feet get very hot (been like this since pregnant with DD).

I might paint them sometimes, but mostly they are just tidy but unpainted.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 21:45
Shock

Exactly how long are the hairs on her toes?!

DoTheBestThingsInLifeHaveFleas · 02/06/2013 21:45

OP I totally agreed with you. I haven't read all the messages but was surprised at the stick you got that I saw. I can see the other posters points about people with medical conditions and time etc. Not everyone has time or is physically able to have smart feet. But there really is something repulsive about horrid feet. I remember being at a picnic once and simply not being able to eat because one of our party had such disgusting feet in sandals it made me feel sick. I couldn't very well just leave (rude) or explain what the problem was. But I do remember being sort of fascinated by their awfulness and not being able to stop looking. (Sort of like a horror film). Urgh anyway it's just basic grooming like clean clothes and hair surely... (Unless medical condition) I can't believe all those horrid feet out their belong to a medical condition or 80% of sandalled feet I see would belong to this medial group!!! Shock

AMumInScotland · 02/06/2013 21:45

Dirty clothes, hair, and skin are other people's business, because they smell. Feet that don't smell are fine, and it is up to people what they choose (or can) do about them.

infamouspoo · 02/06/2013 21:45

Isnt hard skin meant to protect the feet? Making it all soft would mean sore feet surely?
Shock at setting fire to hairs.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 21:46

That was to Lem (and her weirdly hair burning friend) by the way.

FarBetterNow · 02/06/2013 21:47

I now feel rather proud of my big toe nail that definately has a problem and is very thick and yellow.
Op has made me want to show it off.

Re hygiene:
My feet are scrubbed every morning so they start the day clean.
I even pumice them once a week.
But why would I waste money paying someone to do 'stuff' to them?

I don't pay to have my eyebrows done either - I do them myself.

Sallystyle · 02/06/2013 21:47

When someone sits on the couch with their ugly feet out I notice. I also notice yellow teeth when someone smiles (and mine aren't exactly white btw) I notice things.

I don't paint my toenails or do anything fancy except get the hard skin off and keep my nails short and clean. I don't think that is too much to hope that others would want to do the same when wearing sandals.

I liken it to going out and not combing your hair or wearing ill-fitted clothes.

I do love how people then go on to mention disabilities and stuff beyond peoples control. I thought it was obvious that the OP was talking about basic foot hygiene.

squoosh · 02/06/2013 21:48

Setting fire to your toe hair all sounds very Viking like behaviour.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 21:48

You sound a bit feeble DoTheBestThings if some feet spoiled your enjoyment of a picnic Hmm

Melty · 02/06/2013 21:49

I have horrible feet.
Have had surgery on both, fixations and osteotomies so quite scarred.
Also I have a terrible fungus ridden toenail that I cannot seem to clear up.
(Any suggestions by the way, I have tried everything for the last 2 yrs?)
I hate my feet.

I generally don't wear sandals because of this. But actually, I don't ever really notice other peoples feet, although I might have the occasional chuckle if I see someone with socks and sandals. (in my head, and would never let them know I was chuckling)

infamouspoo · 02/06/2013 21:49

'wearing ill-fitted clothes'

Guilty Blush
But in my defence most of them were given to me and its a case of waste not, want not.
I'm astounded people care enough to notice.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 21:52

Most people don't care or notice infamous - only shallow people, who think we should all conform to a standard, care about crap like other people's feet or clothes.
