To think that no one should be allowed to wear a sandal without some proper foot grooming?!

It's that time of year again... Ah summer and its long days of sunshine. I so love it but the one thing I fear most in this change of season? The sandalled "foot claw"!

Suddenly everyone is wearing heel, toe and full foot exposed foot-wear. And the exposed foot often is a scary site to behold: yellowed toe nails, bunions, fungus, severely cracked heels, dry skin. I am constantly shocked by how many people so casually don sandals with their feet looking a hot mess. Certainly not for public view.

AIBU to expect people to invest in a little foot grooming in the summer? Have people not heard of a podiatrist or a pedicure?

This is an honest question as the flagrant disregard for foot hygiene drives me nuts.. But I may be the only person who feels this way?!

Here you go!

Argyle Socks

Some lovely colour combos!

I spelt it wrong - went with the Scottish region spelling!

I am partaking of the death sock and technical sandal this afternoon and enjoying the experience immensely. I have lovely feet btw but they are more powerful with the above combo deployed.

BerthaTheBogCleaner · 03/06/2013 16:10

Ooh, I'm liking the lovely thick woolly colourful socks with crocs. For next week, when it's winter again.

In the meantime - do I have to groom my feet if I haven't shaved my legs? Or can I just enjoy the sun?

digerd · 03/06/2013 16:12

I wear cotton and spandex support socks, as I am over the hill and rapidly accelerating. They are to stop DVT as I sit and sleep too long and my ankles swell up in the humid heat. Sad.
But when it is hot and humid I can't wear themConfused.

I never look at people's feet as not interested. I like the closed in toes clog style, so don't need to worry about dirty toe nails from gardening Smile

Dahlen · 03/06/2013 16:15

I sort of get where you're coming from OP. I don't mind a bit of cracked heel or hairy toes as that's all part of the normal range, but uncut toenails and rampant fungal infections make me shudder and I don't see the merit in pretending to be cool with it. It's horrible. I think the same if I see someone with an ulcer on their leg, for example. Doesn't mean I don't feel sympathy for them or that I think less of them, but I will notice and think 'ugh'.

That said, I probably would judge someone for not cutting their toenails - or, to be more precise, I would wonder about their home life. If you can't find 5 minutes to cut your toenails once a week or so, something has gone badly wrong in your life. But I would be talking about a fair amount of growth, not just a few mm over.

Letticetheslug · 03/06/2013 16:16

YABVU
"foot grooming" is not going to do anything for a bunion. They are incredibly painful and no-one chooses to have them. If a little bit of a pedicure would help I would be overjoyed

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 16:20

You would think "ugh" about someone with a leg ulcer? Shock

I hope you're not in any of the caring professions Dahlen

Dahlen · 03/06/2013 16:26

I don't think anyone in the caring profession thinks "ooh, how lovely, a really attractive ulcer." Don't be obtuse.

At no point did I say I thought that about the person. I said I thought it about the physical problem in question. In fact, I deliberately qualified it with "doesn't mean I don't feel sympathy for them or that I think less of them".

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 16:30

Oh I'm far from obtuse.

But it if makes you feel better to say that then knock yourself out love. Hmm

Dahlen · 03/06/2013 16:32

If I had a nurse who decided that actually my leg ulcer wasn't that big a deal, people should stop judging it and I should just carry on with it as it was, I'd be horrified.

I'd want a nurse who thought it should be tackled so that it no longer caused me any problems.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 16:38

A leg ulcer is a notoriously hard thing to treat and way more serious than an infected toe-nail or hard skin on feet.

I don't know anyone who "judges" leg ulcers - anyone who did that would be quite horrible frankly.

TheBigJessie · 03/06/2013 16:39

I think I might break the habit of a lifetime, and wear sandals sans chaussettes. Where doth the OP live? She might like to see my feet!

I still have vestigial thickening along the side of my foot from long hours of work on my kicks. So, barefoot, there's bumpiness and an odd bulge along there. But I like it that my old hobbies pre-children have left a trace.

www.fastkicktkd.com/images/deb-sidekick.gif?942 not me unfortunately, but by god, doesn't she look spectacular?

I have relatives who are experts in a particular martial art TheBigJessie - looks fantastic watching them do it!-

"Rampant fungal infections make me shudder"
Hmm
You do realise that fungal toenail infections are notoriously hard to treat?
People don't generally leave them to fester just to annnoy observers...

expatinscotland · 03/06/2013 16:50

YANBU

FannyMcNally · 03/06/2013 16:51

I have never looked at anyone else's feet in my entire life! My own aren't brilliant. I have white stuff on the nails of my big toes, does anyone know what that is? I don't want to cover it up with nail polish until I know what it is.

Melty · 03/06/2013 17:00

Fanny, quite possibly the beginnings of a fungal nail infection....
If so, try and get on top of it now, before it spreads..

TiggyD · 03/06/2013 17:14

I always comb my foot hair.

Grin Why am I finding that so funny?

And there's a sentence I'd never ever ever thought to see.
