To think that no one should be allowed to wear a sandal without some proper foot grooming?!

It's that time of year again... Ah summer and its long days of sunshine. I so love it but the one thing I fear most in this change of season? The sandalled "foot claw"!

Suddenly everyone is wearing heel, toe and full foot exposed foot-wear. And the exposed foot often is a scary site to behold: yellowed toe nails, bunions, fungus, severely cracked heels, dry skin. I am constantly shocked by how many people so casually don sandals with their feet looking a hot mess. Certainly not for public view.

AIBU to expect people to invest in a little foot grooming in the summer? Have people not heard of a podiatrist or a pedicure?

This is an honest question as the flagrant disregard for foot hygiene drives me nuts.. But I may be the only person who feels this way?!

'I would wonder about their home life. If you can't find 5 minutes to cut your toenails once a week or so, something has gone badly wrong in your life'

Would you like a heart rending list of my woes? Wink

My topiary has gone to pot. I haven't shaved my my legs or my armpits for weeks. Things are clearly very very wrong in my life

Moreover I have an unsightly ingrowing toenail.

I havent shaved my pits for YEARS. Really cant be arsed. Men dont have too. Why should I.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 18:50

Neither do French women.

Mabelface · 03/06/2013 18:58

My belly gets in the way of me cutting my toenails, and no, I'm not pregnant. Wink

Oooh, we're now having an unkemptness competition! Legs - hairs are about a centimetre. Hands - rough with multiple small cuts and grazed. Nails - short. Hair on head - resolutely untrimmed.

KatieScarlett2833 · 03/06/2013 19:09

It's DH uncut toenail hooves that make me heave. Especially since he likes to annoy me by running them up my leg in bed at night. I need to LTB, don't I ?

tbh unless you have real problems with illness and skin issues etc, its not hard to add feet to your daily grooming (male and female) a bit of filing with something like the soap and glory foot file from boots for about £7 and a bit of foot cream every day makes a huge difference. I also second the rubbing of vicks on toenails for nice looking nails in record quick time... worked for me. no different to filing a fingernail and using handcream. Op I agree its a shame to see the basic hard skin stuff on heels in summer sandals on someone who clearly makes an effort with the rest of their appearance and I am not judging those who clearly have bigger problems with illnesses / disabilities etc just those who ignore their feet which I guess the op was aiming this at.

Dahlen · 03/06/2013 19:41

Hairy toes/yellow nails/shaving/wearing makeup - all cosmetic and all a completely justifiable to ignore.

Cutting toe nails not so. Ignoring your toe nails is more similar to neglecting brushing your teeth than it is shaving. So I repeat, if you can't be bothered to cut your toenails or brush your teeth, something has gone badly wrong. Anyone with decent self-esteem will look after their body to the extent of preventing health problem even if they don't want to conform to social expectations of beauty.

My feet aren't very beautiful (but then I really don't think feet are beautiful full stop), and I don't think I've ever considered moisturizing them (who would feet need to be moist, sounds disgusting). I wash them regularly and cut the nails when they look a bit long and that's about it.

I wear sandals in the summer because otherwise they stink, and frankly I think that's a bigger deal (and more polite) than whether some incredibly shallow person gets the heebiie jeebies about their unperfectness.

OP - Your poor precious little eyes. How do you cope????? You are a martyr, your road to heaven will be a swift one.
