To think that no one should be allowed to wear a sandal without some proper foot grooming?!

It's that time of year again... Ah summer and its long days of sunshine. I so love it but the one thing I fear most in this change of season? The sandalled "foot claw"!

Suddenly everyone is wearing heel, toe and full foot exposed foot-wear. And the exposed foot often is a scary site to behold: yellowed toe nails, bunions, fungus, severely cracked heels, dry skin. I am constantly shocked by how many people so casually don sandals with their feet looking a hot mess. Certainly not for public view.

AIBU to expect people to invest in a little foot grooming in the summer? Have people not heard of a podiatrist or a pedicure?

This is an honest question as the flagrant disregard for foot hygiene drives me nuts.. But I may be the only person who feels this way?!

i agree with op, trim those claws! if they are yellow a little bit of nail varnish will make a big difference. oh and pop a bit of moisturiser on.(you dont have to go to a salon etc) So quick, so much nicer!

crashdoll · 03/06/2013 15:03

Btw not all thickened, yellow toe nails are fungal or even curable. Mine are in a bad state and it is not fungal. My chiropodist says they can look like this due to trauma, illness or malnutrition.

neverputasockinatoaster · 03/06/2013 15:05

All these people saying 'pop on a bit of moisturiser' - have they read the thread?

I DO!! I file, moisturise, exfoliate.....

My feet can be lovely in the morning and dry and manky by the afternoon.

And yes, I've heard of Flexitol and yes, I've used it and no, it doesn't work long term for me.

TheSmallClanger · 03/06/2013 15:06

My feet are pretty wild and untamed. They are a strange shape, and I am on my feet a lot. If I filed all the pads off, they would hurt.

I do not care if others are offended by the sight of them in sandals. Look at something else instead.

fieldfare · 03/06/2013 15:13

I dislike feet in general, they can be a bit grim.

Mine at the moment are shameful as I'm preparing to do a 20 mile walk at the weekend. If I file, moisturise and soften them to wear flip flops as normal then I'd be in agony with blisters etc. I shall have a good old pamper session the weekend after the walk (once the blisters have gone down!) and normal feet shall be resumed.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:14

And I'm sure we are all grateful for you input littlediamond

But what about hands eh? Will no-one think of the hands?

So much more visible - and think how you could make even more people feel bad about themselves!

Like my poor old (late) grandad who worked on farms all his life (when it was horse-power too) and used to scrub his hands with bleach to try and get the ingrained dirt out. His hands were all gnarled and hard-working but they were the hands that put food on the table and clothed his 5 children.

OK - that a bit of a rant off topic but you have no idea about the life's of people you are so lightly judging. And you have no right to be all offended at people's appearance.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:15

"That was a rant..."

TheBigJessie · 03/06/2013 15:17

Now, I've read through this entire thread, I'm going to go on a rant. I am a great believer in clean feet and short toenails, because I was a martial arts enthusiast in my youth, and the rules were clean, bare feet.

But this thread is... I mean.. File off the hard bits? Really? Why the fuck would I? Those hard bits have developed because I move about and use my feet. Why is an attractive foot a foot that never does anything? and in fact, cannot do anything, because it is being kept artificially soft?

You know, it's the 21st century. I don't feel obliged to wear a corset. I don't bind my feet. I think ear piercing is a choice, not necessary modification for females.

And I don't groom my feet!

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:19

You don't wear a corset TheBigJessie?? Shock

StuntGirl · 03/06/2013 15:26

Yy jessie. How nice for these people who can pop on a bit of moisturiser and off they trot with their pretty little feet. I moisturise daily, use a pumice stone weekly and paint my nails. They still look dry and cracked with hard patches, but they serve their purpose so I'm not really fussed.

And I only moisturise and file as much as I do because they're unbearably painful to walk on otherwise! I've been hobbling around today thanks to a crack that appeared yesterday. Will take a week or so of intensive foot care to get it to go away, and in the mean time I'll be limping around :(

HesterShaw · 03/06/2013 15:28

neverputasockinatoaster (great name btw), why the hell should you do all that because some women on the Internet tell you you should?! Be proud of your horny hard feet!

Skin develop hard skin for a reason anyway. Imagine if we walked on our hands - their skin would be a lot harder and hornier

Mabelface · 03/06/2013 15:30

My bunions won't go without some serious surgery, which they're not ready for yet. I can't be arsed faffing with polish on my toenails either.

crashdoll · 03/06/2013 15:31

Can you imagine the uproar if I posted a thread about faces instead of feet?

"AIBU to find some people's faces so damn ugly? Pop a bit of lippy on, it's so much nicer!"

crashdoll · 03/06/2013 15:32

Also, why are we picking on women's feet? What about the menz??!!

I know this will really upset some people but I wear socks with my crocs. Grin If I get dirty looks, I just exaggerate my arthritic limp and wince a bit. Wink

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:38

Poor menz.

Always ignored.

Actually, there's a rich vein of AIBU material here

E.g. "AIBU to think that no-one should be allowed out in a sleeveless dress until they have addressed their batwing problem?"... And I'd include myself in that batwing crime.

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:39

Oh yes, I am particularly fond of my pale pink socks with flowers and fuchsia crocs to really offend the fashion police. :)

Salmotrutta · 03/06/2013 15:46

Do you have Argyll socks Maryz and crashdoll? - can't beat a nice Argyll I always say.
