To think that no one should be allowed to wear a sandal without some proper foot grooming?!

It's that time of year again... Ah summer and its long days of sunshine. I so love it but the one thing I fear most in this change of season? The sandalled "foot claw"!

Suddenly everyone is wearing heel, toe and full foot exposed foot-wear. And the exposed foot often is a scary site to behold: yellowed toe nails, bunions, fungus, severely cracked heels, dry skin. I am constantly shocked by how many people so casually don sandals with their feet looking a hot mess. Certainly not for public view.

AIBU to expect people to invest in a little foot grooming in the summer? Have people not heard of a podiatrist or a pedicure?

This is an honest question as the flagrant disregard for foot hygiene drives me nuts.. But I may be the only person who feels this way?!

This is an image of a foot with psoriatic arthritis. Can you really tell the difference between this and a 'badly groomed' foot?

NorksAreMessy · 02/06/2013 22:37

OK talkin Vicks v. Garlic.

Shall we take this outside ?

(to look at the sunset, stroke the cows and watch the swallows swooping)
:o

garlicgrump · 02/06/2013 22:37

I've got awful teeth and quite ugly feet. They're genetic. I do have lovely hair & eyes, though: also genetic. I'm not taking credit or blame for any of 'em.

And I wear "ill fitted clothes" - not fitted at all, actually - as they're comfortable.

Despite my offensive teeth & feet, I really like the S&B board here. I suspect the sneering posters are in AIBU because they're too horrid for S&B.

I have conjoined toes, you know!

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 02/06/2013 22:37

I have a friend with a nail infection, she has tried everything over the years. If the Vicks works she will be very very impressed. The thing is, she is never without nail polish as she's too embarrassed by them (both big toe nails) - will the Vicks work through the nail polish/under the nail? and how long do you think it would take to work??

This may convert her to MN Grin

bedmonster · 02/06/2013 22:38

Arrgghhhh! I have foot issues, I hate seeing anyones feet, groomed or otherwise! I hate seeing them. All sat round at a bbq earlier and 7 people had their manky feet out Shock
(I call all feet manky, not that they looked a particular way!)
I run quite a lot and have lost toenails over the years, but they have grown back normally and my feet generally look 'normal'. I rub cream into my heels cos I hate the feel of dry skin, and keep nails trimmed short.
I don't ever get them out as I couldn't stand to look at them! I don't even get them out on holiday (poor feet!).
Today I had boots on.

Bvlgari · 02/06/2013 22:39

Yanbu OP
My feet have not yet been in sandals as they desperately need attention
I don't think op is talking about needing beautiful shiny pedicures, just trimmed nails and a bit of moisturiser would help

Sallystyle · 02/06/2013 22:39

My husband has horribly dry cracked heels. The cracks are so deep and they are really not nice. He has lovely shaped feet but the heels are just a mess and so sore looking.

He would never go out wearing sandals and there has been plenty of times I have had to wear ballerinas or something because I have had an off and on problem with one of my nails and I don't want people to see it.

garlicgrump · 02/06/2013 22:39

Garlic is antibiotic, btw. Taking the smell out also removes its anti-bacterial properties, so you gotta learn to love it Grin

garlicgrump · 02/06/2013 22:42

Chipping - Yes, if she rubs it well around the cuticles & under the nail tips. It would work better without the polish, though, as nails are slightly permeable.

McNewPants2013 · 02/06/2013 22:43

I have horrible toe nails, i really don't care anymore about my feet.

i prefer to be cooler in sandals instead of sweeting in shoes.

Elquota · 02/06/2013 22:44

YABU. Other people can look however they like.

lottieandmia · 02/06/2013 22:46

Generally, YABU - it's beyond shallow to judge other people for how their feet look.

StuntGirl · 02/06/2013 22:48

I moisturise my feet almost every day, it doesn't stop the dry skin and cracks. So anyone offended by them can fuck right off!

DiamondDoris · 02/06/2013 22:53

YAB a bit U. However, I did once see toenails so long and hanging off the sandals that they were literally scraping the floor - but they were painted. Very odd. I hate feet so I don't tend to look to see if they've had a pedicure.

Damnautocorrect · 02/06/2013 22:54

To be honest I've better things to be doing with my 4 year old then dragging the poor bugger to a stinky nail place whilst I have my feet tended to.
I do the best at home, but my toes are always painted if on show. I hate my cracked heels though, nothing seems to work.

Pumpkinette · 02/06/2013 22:56

I don't think you are being unreasonable. Well maybe expecting people to have a pedicure is a bit much, but I do agree that no one wants to see manky feet. It doesnt take much to file and moisturise dry skin. unpaintedtoes are fine if they are clean and not all yellow. yuck. Now I know some people have health issues that can cause foot problems (diabetics etc) but I still hate manky looking feet. When I was pregnant my feet got really dry, hard skin and there is now way in hell I would have exposed them to the world.

I look at people wearing sandals with awful feet the same way I would look at someone with cellulite thighs wearing a mini skirt. Turns my stomach .

Elquota · 02/06/2013 22:57

StuntGirl have you tried Evening Primrose Oil and Fish Oil supplements? The Omega 3 and Omega 6 might help.

seasalt · 02/06/2013 22:58

YANBU. I hate feet, yuck.

pigletmania · 02/06/2013 22:59

Gosh you would hate my eczemad feet. Not much I can do, but exposing the. To the ir helps

LayMizzRarb · 02/06/2013 22:59

Oh lord, have you really nothing better to do than go round sneering at other people's feet? Sorry to disappoint you, but I actually don't give a shiny shite if my feet are cracked and don't reach your standards. Just glad to be able to give you something to go home and seethe about in your spare time.
That's ok. You're welcome

Here's a tip - try raising your gaze and instead look around, look people in the eye and just smile.

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 23:03

I'm actually wondering how the posters agreeing with the OP manage to go about their daily business Hmm

All those feet lurking out there for you together aerated about. How do you cope Hmm

Salmotrutta · 02/06/2013 23:04

to get aerated about

willowstar · 02/06/2013 23:05

I know I shouldn't agree with you, but I sort of do. I haven't worn sandles yet because I haven't had the chance to sort my feet out.

LegArmpits · 02/06/2013 23:07

Oh do fuck off. Life is TOO SHORT.

neverputasockinatoaster · 02/06/2013 23:10

My heels are really dry and cracked. I am sure they would disgust the OP and she would assume that I am lazy and don't have the politeness and manners to care for them...

They are washed every morning in the shower and then slathered in foot cream - sometimes a general foot cream and sometimes a heel fixing one. My nails are not yellow though and are short but I refuse to paint them. Life is too short. Every evening they are filed with a foot file thingy and slathered with cream. I would wear socks to bed but I get ridiculously hot feet! Even doing this if I wear sandals I have horrid sore cracked heels by the end of the day......

Ah well, manners dictates I'd better hide away as I'm no oil painting and my clothes don't fit too well either as I am a bit of a funny shape. I've got grey hair as well and I don't dye it. Wouldn't want to upset anyone so I'd best just hide here until the winter!
