to have told this girl off today...

was a lovely sunny day today so I went bike riding with my family, as we waited in the queue for an ice cream, this girl screams and flicks a bug off her shoulder (we're in a country park)

anyway after a couple of minutes she looks at the dragonfly that she flicked off and promptly stands on it.

I'm quite Angry at this and tell her so, there were a lot of kids around. My mum said I shouldn't have had a go at her so WIBU?

Kids wont have been fussed about a insect been squished I dont think.

Its likely that no one saw her do it.

WorraLiberty · 28/05/2013 00:31

I don't like gratuitous killing of things for no reason

But how do you know she didn't have a phobia?

Reading MN has made me come to the conclusion that the majority of posters have a phobia of spiders...yet I very rarely read that someone's bothered to get help for it.

She probably stamped on it because she was scared it was going to recover and fly up at her.

AKissIsNotAContract · 28/05/2013 00:31

I manage quite well, just don't like it when people think it's ok to kill innocent creatures

Unless you're eating them presumably?

ImABadGirl · 28/05/2013 00:34

if she had a phobia, surely she wouldn't have waited a few minutes to stamp on the thing, she wasn't hysterical, she was laughing and joking with her mates...

about 50-60 people saw her do this

akiss I don't have a problem with the natural food chain

Watched about 10 dragonflies zooming around over a pond last summer, they were brilliant.

GoblinGranny · 28/05/2013 00:40

I like dragonflies, and spiders. So I'm unhappy when I read or see anyone squishing them, and I'd probably have objected as a reflex.
There are frequent threads with Mnetters squeaking about how scary spiders are, and how they swat them and how the spiders deserve it,
How is that any different?

aderynlas · 28/05/2013 00:45

Don't swat spiders, trap them under a glass, slide newspaper underneath. Then drop spider out of the window. This is why glass must be plastic, because if spider moves I tend to drop the lot out of the window Shock

WorraLiberty · 28/05/2013 00:45

No not necessarily?

IfNotNowThenWhen · 28/05/2013 00:48

Yesterday i was trying to help a HUGE bumble bee off my window ledge. It was really dozy, and DS thought it might be thirsty, so i splashed some water on it. It drank the water(i think!)and revived a bit. Then we had to go out, so left it sitting on the windowsill, but shut the window.
When we came back it was dead :( Ds said maybe I drowned it. Its fur was quite wet I after i splashed it... We buried him under the apple tree, which sounds mental, but seriously, he was the size of a mouse!
Um. What was the question again..?

IKnowWhat · 28/05/2013 00:54

I kill slugs and snails in my garden. I dont poison them, I squish them. The birds and the frogs eat the remains (mostly)

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 28/05/2013 00:57

Slugs and snails are cannibals! They eat each other once they die. I saw about 4 just eating this poor dead snail.

Futterby · 28/05/2013 01:01

YANBU. I would have said something too I think. I had a raging argument the other day with my DP's aunt's husband about how it's wrong to put a line of sugar from one ant's nest to another and watch them fight to the death and he seemed to think I was being unreasonable Hmm I just don't get why people kill harmless animals, it really bugs me. (Excuse the pun).

cornypedicure · 28/05/2013 08:29

YANBU
What an ignorant woman.

Sallystyle · 28/05/2013 08:34

YANBU

Arseholish to kill insects. I hate how some seem to think that because they are small and sometimes annoying that it's ok just to kill them. Nature is beautiful, we shouldn't be killing it!

JumpingJackSprat · 28/05/2013 08:44

I think anyone who shrieks at the sight of an insect needs to grow the fuck up.

JumpingJackSprat · 28/05/2013 08:44

Yanbu, by the way.

Sallystyle · 28/05/2013 08:46

I am with you hiddenhome

Insects are important and we shouldn't go around killing it just because it's a bug. They have a job to do and we need to protect our wildlife more.

It makes me sad how some don't see the importance of looking after wildlife, even the little annoying bugs. Even my four year old understands why we don't kill insects Hmm

I am not distraught when I see it happening or anything but I do think it is ignorant not to understand the importance of not killing insects.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 28/05/2013 08:47

Dp is scared of wasps, if they come in the house he kills them. I'm sure all those complaining about the killing of insects would soon head for the ant powder if they were getting them in the house

CaptainJamesTKirk · 28/05/2013 08:48

When I was about 6 I stood on a spider, on purpose. My dad saw me and asked why I would do that. He then continued to tell me that the spider was only looking for food to feed his baby spiders back home but now he wouldn't be able to go back home and the baby spiders will wonder what happened to their daddy.

Way to traumatise a child... But I've never killed anything on purpose since.

Sallystyle · 28/05/2013 08:53

I have only had ants once and iirc we got someone out to cover the holes they were coming in from.

Plus ants come in homes for a reason, food. So I would sort out whatever was attracting them in before even thinking of killing them. You can also put scents down that they hate to help too, there are a lot of others things you can try first before reaching for the powder.

There is also a huge difference between killing something that is in its own environment and killing something that is becoming a pest in your own home but I would never go straight for the ant powder, I would try to fix it some other way first.

limitedperiodonly · 28/05/2013 08:59

It's a bit mean. I suppose if had been a wasp people would have been more supportive of her, OP.

People don't like wasps Sad

threesypeesy · 28/05/2013 09:00

None of your business imo if it was me you'd have got a mouth full back for one sticking your nose where it didn't belong and for cuasing a seen trying to purposely embarrass someone and make them feel belittled all beacuse she done something you wouldn't! !!

A dragonfly isn't 'just a bug' like a fly or a cockroach. They're endangered aren't they?

They're so beautiful. The thoughts of someone standing on one is similar to someone standing on a butterfly.

YANBU.
