To wonder why so many people spell poo as pooh on MN

Is it a joke I have missed? Is it now an alternative spelling to poo? To me 'poo' is what comes out of your bum and 'pooh' is a bear called Winnie . Someone enlighten me please!

I confess it bothers me to see Winnie The Pooh addressed as 'Winnie the Poo'. Makes me think of a bear shaped turd.

Haha the only time I've ever corrected someone's spelling on MN, was the poo/pooh thing.

Having just consulted the enormous dictionary that hides behind my desk, pooh is the correct spelling. Poo does not appear in the dictionary (unless one of the cats mistakes it for the litter tray of course).

Although I too find it odd, I think the answer is simply that some people spell it this way. I have a childcare book that uses this spelling.

Poo = faeces
pooh = disbelieving e.g. I pooh pooh that idea (and of course the proper noun for the Bear who likes honey)

Its a posh was of saying pooh - like lavatory instead of loo.

I think it used to be pooh and no it's poo. Like it used to be yoghurt and now it's yogurt.

Well I never knew that. I really never knew that pooh meant defecation. I wonder if it dropped out of popular use before Winnie the Pooh was written.
